Ubuntu :: How To Prevent A Diskcheck At Startup
May 8, 2010
I installed 10.04 LTS with great succes on my very old compac armada 500 laptop, but experience the problem of the hanging diskcheck at startup at regural intervals. I read this is a reported bug. My question is: is there any file or methot by which I can prevent diskcheck from running at startup, or put the frequency of running at a very very large number at least until the bug is fixed ?

If I have compiz on, it causes my system to freeze sometimes at startup. I've turned compiz off, but I miss the effects. Is there a setting somewhere I could change to prevent the freezing at startup. We have a computer with an nvidia card with compiz enabled, and this doesn't freeze. Graphics Card: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (From lscpi) Ubuntu Release: 10.04

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and made some changes in Xorg.conf to try enabling twinview. Unfortunately, Ubuntu just stops at the startup logo now. Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again? Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.

Ubuntu randomly switches off. I eventually found out that it happens when my system is over loading. If my memory goes up to 100% use or CPU, Ubuntu powers off. If there some software that I can download to prevent my system from using 100% of its power, so it doesn't power off?

I have a machine with Windows XP installed on the HDD. I intend to install Ubuntu on a USB memory stick so that I can insert it into a USB slot and boot from that instead. What I would like to do though is to prevent it having access to the existing internal hard drive. It sounds as if it should be easy but I ca find a lot about mounting devices but not preventing auto-mounting.

I installed Ubuntu to use ddrescue to clone my dying drive and keep the log.Now the question is:Does Ubuntu really try to repair a corrupt NTFS disk during boot?If so, how can I change this behaviour, including any disks attached to the system in future?I had a similar question for the live cd, I think it should be easier now, as we can configure the system.Btw am I the only one to think an 'auto repair' by default is no good without asking for permission? It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.

Every time after reboot it asks for the password. I need it to just lower this security and do this by itself.
Also, in general, how can I prevent Ubuntu from asking the password from the interactive user at all?

I would like to ask if there is a way of preventing a file from being deleted, but still retaining the option of editing it. I know that I can set write access off with chmod, but that would also mean that I can't edit the file any more. What I would like to achieve is to make it impossible to remove a file on which I am working.

In /etc/default/rcS I have set FSCKFIX=yes. This solves a recurring 'no init found' problem that prevents my machine from booting. Occasionally however, the setting reverts (by itself somehow) to FSCKFIX=no. Thus my machine cannot boot. Is there a way that I can prevent this file from being changed?

If I set my Ubuntu 10.10 to sleep after an hour of inactivity, I can't leave Blender to render overnight. The processing that Blender is doing seems to be ignored, and the computer goes to sleep after an hour. How can I prevent this from happening? I don't want to set Sleep to Never, I would like the computer to sleep after Blender is done.

I currently run a Windows XP virtual machine (using VirtualBox) so that I can use iTunes. This is fine, and I have set up a USB device filter which allows me to use my iPod, and update it via iTunes on the VM. However, this only works sometimes. I think the reason is that the VM sometimes can't get access to the iPod because it's mounted in Ubuntu - I think it may just be a race for who can mount it first - Ubuntu or the VM, when I plug it in. Is there a way I can prevent the iPod from automounting in Ubuntu so this problem (hopefully) won't arise?

I'm setting up an Ubuntu Computer Lab at my kids' school, and am trying to find a way to lock certain icons to the desktop. For example, I need each user to have Firefox on the desktop, and not be able to delete it. I've tried doing a chown on the Firefox shortcut and changing ownership to root, or to myself, but the student account can still just delete it with no problems. I've also tried using Sabayon, and while it does bring the shortcut back at each logon, it's not "Marked as Trusted" which is an annoying constant popup. How can I ensure that when logged on, each user will have a Firefox shortcut, along with a couple other mandatory ones? Some logon script maybe?

I don't want games on my computer (running 9.10). Removed them successfully, but update manager keeps presenting them as suggested updates in update manager. Requires me to go through and uncheck all the games each time I do an update. Is there some way I can stop update manager from re-presenting removed programs or block future game updates?

I use the following method for preventing the users from changing their passwords , is there any other method other than this ?
ls -l /usr/bin/passwd
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 37140 2010-01-26 12:09 /usr/bin/passwd
so we need to remove the suid for that command as follows :- chmod u-s /usr/bin/passwd now normal users won't be able to change their own passwords - and only the root user will be able to do it for them.

I run Freenet occasionally, but not all the time. Freenet doesn't run unless told to, but Java loads on every boot and sits there and hogs resources for no reason whatsoever. What's worse, as soon as I kill it with fire (sudo kill -9 "PID"), it respawns within seconds. How do I make Java not load unless required? And die and stay dead when I want it dead?

How can you turn off unwanted file uploads in Amule? In Limewire you can decide if you want to share files or not. How can you do this in Amule. I've turned down the settings to 0 or1 and reduced the bandwidth time etc. But to actually prevent? Also in windows there's all kinds of file splitters and joiners what is recommended in Ubuntu.

I've got 2 HDDs. Ubuntu 10.04 is installed on the first and Windows on the second. But Windows is only on a small partition for special cases. Therefore I don't want that Windows to be included in GRUB whenever the kernel is updated or whenever I run update-grub. If I really want to start Windows, I am able to do so via a menu from BIOS.Is it possible to permanently exclude Windows from grub or disable GRUB's autosearching for other operating systems?

I have a Hitachi SimpleDrive (LS-1000-EMEA) it has an "Auto-sleep" function which I believe is controlled by the enclosure itself. The problem I'm having is that when the drive goes to sleep Ubuntu does not seem to be able to wake it up again. I am running Karmic 9.10 as a stripped down install with XBMC as a front-end. I cannot access the drive at all when it does this.
I'm not sure if the problem is that the drive is formatted as NTFS. I notice that when the drive is connected to my Mac or PC it resumes no problem (with a slight delay as the drive gets out of standby) but with Ubuntu it just seems to stop responding. When I reboot the drive is not mounted by Ubuntu. Physically, the blue LED indicator on the drive is frozen (i.e. lit-up) rather than flashing as it normally would. I have to actually unplug (from the mains) and plug it back in for it to work.I have tried using sdparm, but as I say I think the sleep function is controlled by the enclosure and thus sdparm gives me no standby options.

I'm running rtorrent 0.8.6/0.12.6 with the rtorrent.rc below. I have watch directories set up and all the torrents picked up from the watch directory will automatically resume after a few seconds if I try to pause them. This is not a problem with manually added torrents. Everybody that uses rtorrent uses watch directories why should mine be a problem?
