Ubuntu :: Prevent Mounting Of Internal HDD?

Jul 27, 2010

I have a machine with Windows XP installed on the HDD. I intend to install Ubuntu on a USB memory stick so that I can insert it into a USB slot and boot from that instead. What I would like to do though is to prevent it having access to the existing internal hard drive. It sounds as if it should be easy but I ca find a lot about mounting devices but not preventing auto-mounting.

Networking :: Mounting Permissions Error / Mounting A Windows Host?

May 28, 2009

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:

Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.

I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

General :: Internal Compiler Error: Segmentation Fault

Apr 6, 2010

I am getting this message: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault

Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate. for every compilation that takes longer (ie: linux kernel, kde sources etc.)

I've tried other OS (at that moment I was on Fedora 12, now on Debian; was a Suse also) and it didn't work. I've tried replacing my hard disk, since it needed an upgrade either ways - that didn't work either. I assumed that it's the RAM fault - tested them with memtest and it says they are fine. Does anyone know what else I can do in order to figure out where the problem is?

Ubuntu :: Get The 'General Error Mounting Filesystems?

Aug 29, 2010

When I try to start up 9.10 I can get past GRUB but not fsck. A file check will be started but no progress will be made and finally I get the 'General error mounting filesystems'.Trying in recovery mode I get this just before the fsck check

Quote:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

This seems to be slightly different than the other threads I've seen discussing this issue. It just all of a sudden happened, I didn't upgrade anything or have any crashes immediately prior.

Ubuntu :: General Error Mounting File System

Apr 13, 2011

I have a dual boot Xp and Ubuntu 10.10.

Recently I was downloading some upgrades in Ubuntu and unfortunately the power to the system got off.

Thereafter on booting it comes to the Grub menu and I'm able to select the OS from the list but if I choose Ubuntu it comes up with a message "General error mounting file system" and the terminal is activated. However, if XP is selected it boots with no issues.

/dev/sda6 is ubuntu installation
/dev/sda7 is swap partition

I went through lot of threads over the net and tried fsck, e2fsck and other variations of that command but at the end all I get the message as

it says sda6 is clean but for sda7 it says :

Superblock invalid trying backup blocks.... Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda7 at the end it suggests "u might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>"

refering some threads here I tried my luck with live CD and the command : sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sda7

General :: Saving Home Partition / Mounting Error?

Dec 26, 2009

i decided to try archlinux in my pc a while ago so i installed it... after three months i started to miss slackware so i decided to reinstall it but i wanted to save my /home partition so when i installed slackware i left my /home partition from arch hoping that i could just mount it on slackware...but now when i try to mount that /home partition this is what i get:

bash-3.1# mount /dev/sda4
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda4,missing codepage or helper program,or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
code....

So i dont really know what is going on here but i hope somebody could help me because i really NEED to get the data from that partition.

oh and by the way i installed slackware on ext4 partitions and the /home partition from arch is ext3 so i dont know if that's maybe the problem o_O?

Ubuntu Installation :: General Error Mounting Filesystems After Interrupted Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10

Oct 13, 2010

Originally posted in Launchpad yesterday [Question #129083]:

Quote: System froze in mid-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now fails to boot, giving a 'general error mounting filesystems' message when loading [in either normal or recovery mode.] However, the boot menu remains accessible with the F8 key and is functional.

While in the 10.10 Live CD, using the chroot method in the grub2 help proved unsuccessful and returned this pastebinned result. The system is 10.04 64-bit running an nvidia card and sporadically froze with increasing frequency. No resolution to the freezing could be found online, which seemed associated with any of nvidia, usb, flash or even firefox. Can someone suggest an alternative to restore to bootable condition and resume upgrade without having to reinstall and wipe the drive? I also followed the copy alternative to the chroot method in the grub2 help and still get the same core dump for chroot and device not found error for upgrade-grub as posted in pastebin. I'm still running off of the 64-bit 10.10 Live CD.

Skimming other "general error mounting filesystems" topics in this section, I realise I may have to bite the bullet and cut my losses, since those other users seemed to settle for a reinstall. Any final advice out there I can try out?

Debian Configuration :: Error Starting Domain: Internal Error Process Exited While Reading Console Log Output

Sep 9, 2010

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied

The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

I have submitted the following to Bugzilla as well. I have a Fortran routine with a C signal handler. When a signal is caught, the signal handler calls gdb with a script argument to the system() call to output a backtrace. When I build the fortran file with the -g option, run the program, and send it a signal,I receive the error message "stack.c:295: internal-error . Without the -g option the error message does not appear but as expected I get limited output in my backtrace. Below is a description of the environment in which the bug is experienced, output from gdb showing the bugs occurrence, as well as source code and a Makefile to reproduce the bug.
