I like the clock applet in my system tray. It's nice to pull it open and see the time in other locations.
However, because of bandwidth, I'd like for it to stop requesting weather updates. Is there a way to prevent the weather from being requested while still showing the locations, and timezones on the clock map?
Popup is comming but nothing showing on popup window. and getting below mentioned error on terminal. Gtk-WARNING (recursed) **: Failed to load module "libcanberra-gtk-module.so":

I have my conky set up so it displays fortune, then I run a script to add enough spaces so that even if fortune is any amount of lines long, it will take up exactly 17 lines, and after that, it displays the time. The problem I have is that a lot of the time, the fortune will display fine, but the time will only display what default_shade_color is (black).
Code:
# UBUNTU-CONKY # A comprehensive conky script, configured for use on # Ubuntu / Debian Gnome, without the need for any external scripts.
[code]....
is there a built-in linux script that does what mine does? and why is conky only drawing the fortune in the right colors? PS the reason I want it all on one conky, is I'm running openbox and the right-click menu only works for stuff drawn to the root screen.
edit: When I don't use the script the colors work just fine, but the spacing's off, obviously. sceenshot-1 shows it.
Is it possible to prevent "unable to connect" messages from appearing instead of blocked web-content? I am using a huge hosts file to block unwanted web content from appearing. The attachment illustrates what I am referring to.
when i do su - abc it ask for password and showing the password in text while entring, is there some thing wrong with the software/module/configurationi am running RH9
I just installed a fresh install of Debian Wheezy to an old Pentium 4 desktop computer I found on Craigslist. Everything is mostly up and running but I've been encountering an odd issue with Firefox. Whenever I type text into either a search or text dialog on Youtube, Facebook or on Duck Duck Go the text is invisible. I can highlight the text to see what I have written, but obviously this is quite annoying not to be able to view what I am typing in these places in real-time. The strange thing is that it is only these sites that I have found, everywhere else (reddit, google, Debian forums as well) can see what I am typing. I'm using Firefox 35.0 right now.
Dolphin showing .iso file as text wants to open in Kate or Kwrite. I reported this bug to Debian so they can get it fixed [URL]...
If you haven't done this fix, download the three iso files to see this problem in Debian 8 32bit: dban-2.3.0_i586.iso shows as normal in Dolphin. [URL]....

I installed Ubuntu to use ddrescue to clone my dying drive and keep the log.Now the question is:Does Ubuntu really try to repair a corrupt NTFS disk during boot?If so, how can I change this behaviour, including any disks attached to the system in future?I had a similar question for the live cd, I think it should be easier now, as we can configure the system.Btw am I the only one to think an 'auto repair' by default is no good without asking for permission? It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.
I regularly use 2 monitors at 2 different locations. Booting Ubuntu on monitor 1 works great. Booting with monitor 2 connected causes Ubuntuto load with really low resolution. If Ubuntu is running and I unplug monitor 1 and connect monitor 2 all is well and it works perfectly. How can I tell Ubuntu not to check/change the display settings during boot so that it will work correctly with monitor 2?
it was on instructions from "She-who-must-be-obeyed"'s orders. I had to install XP Pro onto an unused partition of my hd to dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10. It was an uneventful installation as those things go when dealing with a microshaft product, but after massaging out the bugs with XP, there was no option upon restart to boot to anything but XP. The machine just automatically booted to XP.
Now, here's where I feel even more the fool: during the XP install, a screen passed by saying something about changing the accessibility to the Ubuntu partitions, but that it could "easily" be changed somehow once XP was fully installed...I didn't write it down. I know, I know... I'm not worthy of it, but, please, if there's someone out there who knows what's going on with this, please pity this old fool and offer up any advice you may have.
One of my ubuntu 10.04 boxes starts apache2 server automatically at boot. I know from the output of the command:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 status
I can't remember even setting that up, and I don't think it does so by default, since my other box in fact does not even have apache2 server installed. I can stop the server once I login, but is there a way to stop it from automatically starting the server, or even better, completely uninstall the daemon. I tried
Code:
sudo apt-get remove apache2
but that does not work. I guess the daemon is part of some bigger package.
Has anyone tried encrypting the boot partition to prevent the kernel from being modified. Iv tried following this but I'm running into issues when building. [URL] Im using the source from bzr checkout [URL] Last time I tried I screwed grub and it wouldnt boot.
I got the serious problem after update my opensuse 11.2, after update the message appeared and said restart my machine to updates take effect and after restart system doesn't boot GUI workspace it boot into text like space named "Emerald - Kernel 2.6.31.8.0.1 - desktop (tty1)".What can I do to boot my machine into GUI again?
I am using 10.04 and when I start my system I don't get any boot menu to choose from. I am the only user of this computer and don't have to log in on start up but I would think that the boot menu screen would show up so I could use the recovery tool or change kernel if I wanted to. I have two other computers, and that is the first think that shows up on the screen when I boot them on. I am sure there is an adjustment that need to be made but not sure what to change.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my computers which has an NVIDIA graphics card. The Ubuntu Boot Screen doesn't show up. I know this was a problem in 10.10 but I had found a script to fix it which had worked in that version but when I ran it in 11.04, it didn't do anything.
I am working with a acer netbook that I originally had WinXP installed on. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10, transferred the iso contents to a bootable USB drive and installed Ubuntu. I remember during the setup process that I made sure I chose the option to install on one partition. There is only one partition on my netbook with a small second partition as a swap.
After the installation process and reboot I noticed the grub menu would pop up every boot up giving the list of operating systems of which XP was included. I then ran the update manager and updated 9.10 with all updates. After rebooting the grub menu again showed but the option to choose XP was now gone.
Now everytime I boot up the grub menu shows. How can I modify grub so it will automatically just boot to the OS.
i install ubuntu though wubi and it worked kind of. It asked me to restart at the end so i did and when it was startaing up it didnt show the option to boot into ubuntu.
After upgrading to 10.10 the grub boot menu stopped showing up. I made a custom menu in grub.d and update grub finds everything, but when I restart my system the boot menu never shows. I should have two kernels. How do I get the boot menu to show every time I restart my system?
i did ubuntu 10.10 install in windows and something must have gone wrong since in the preboot menu the ubuntu was visible but could not boot [a windows boot manager message came up immediately on selective ubuntu]i reinstalled it and now have 1 windows 7 and 2 ubuntu. when i select the ubuntu in the an other boot screen [GNTU or GNU come up [2 ubuntu options 2 windows] when i select the normal ubuntu on both the screen flickers and nothing shows up.How can i remove both ubuntu installations and start all over again?ideally without removing windows.
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 via wubi. the installation appears to have gone well but ubuntu doesnt appear as an OS choice when i boot up.
Its not a timeout issue as it is set to 30sec and i can see my other options (windows and a recovery option). the only thing i can think of is that my computer has a separate partition set up for recovery and i think that is screwing things up.
Here is my boot.ini:
My only guess is that since the recovery partition is the first partition that its causing problems.
I was messing with my msconfig trying to free up some memory then I realize when I restarted my PC it just boot directly to Windows 7 without prompting anything, although it should because of Ubuntu.
Then, I tried uninstalling Ubuntu and installing it again (hoping to fix the problem). It's alright for me to just reinstall Ubuntu anytime, I was just exploring it. This error pop up when uninstalling Ubuntu
Code:
For more information, please see the log file:
I searched the "file that was not specified" and it was there!
So, I can't boot to Ubuntu and I can't uninstall it either. What should I do?
I installed wubi to try ubuntu out. It didn't show up in the windows boot manager, so I manually went to startup options and changed the default os from windows to ubuntu, trough right clicking My Computer, and going into the "advanced" tab. Now I don't know how to revert back to windows because this does not have a "My Computer". My os is windows XP professional, by the way.
I was trying to fix my audio driver so that my speakers would work after installing Linux Mint 8. I rebooted it to see if it worked but the computer won't boot up. It gets past the toshiba screen and the mint logo shows up like normal, but then I get what I think is an error message. I can't be sure though because the screen is not showing a solid picture. If I hit escape, I get another similar screen. If I hit escape again the screen goes blank and I can no longer get it to do anything. I'm new to Linux and not much of a computer wiz.
I installed Ubuntu for net book 10.10 with partition from USB port. after installation, I cannot find my windows files. The system is not showing me options to boot from windows 7 at the start up. How can I get my files please.
I am an absolute beginner and have been trying to run Ubuntu 11.04 directly from a sandisk cruzerblade 8 gb. I followed instructions on the Ubuntu site and installed the 11.04 iso on the drive using Uiversal USB installer with Persistence.
PROBLEM-When i reboot, the options screen of UBUNTU shows up and when i choose the first option-"RUN UBUNTU FROM USB" dont remember exact wording. but the problem is nothing happens after that and i am back with the same screen no matter how many times i try.
