Ubuntu :: Prevent File From Being Modified?

Mar 1, 2011

In /etc/default/rcS I have set FSCKFIX=yes. This solves a recurring 'no init found' problem that prevents my machine from booting. Occasionally however, the setting reverts (by itself somehow) to FSCKFIX=no. Thus my machine cannot boot. Is there a way that I can prevent this file from being changed?

General :: Parsing File Dates - Get The Date Of The Last Time A File Was Modified ?

Jan 11, 2010

I need to get the modified date on a file in linux to use in a script.I tried using 'ls -l' on the file, but this caused problems when the date turned from a single digit into a double. The reason for the problem was because I was parsing the result string on spaces. How can I get the date of the last time a file was modified so I can use it in a script? For example, if a file was modified on 1/11/2010, I need the 11.

Ubuntu :: Find Last Modified File In Current Directory And All Subdirectories?

May 28, 2010

I need to write a script that is given a directory as an argument, and it prints the last modified file from that directory and all its subdirectories.

for example:

$ newest /usr/etc
--> /usr/etc/httpd/httpd May 28 12:16

If I had to do it only for the current dir, it would be easy...I'd probably use "ls -lt" and then show only the first line...

Ubuntu :: Bluefish Annoying Message - File Has Been Modified By Another Process

I'm using Bluefish on my laptop to modify files on my desktop web server. The machines are networked with samba. Every time I save the files, I'm prompted with this window that says: File has been modified by another process. It gives me the option to cancel or overwrite. It's the only program that does this. I can click on overwrite and that works, but it's pretty annoying.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - 'Date Modified' Changed On File Copy To NTFS Partition?

Jul 6, 2011

Prior to making a fresh install of 10.04, I made a back up of all my documents by copying them to a NTFS partition. I did this my selecting files in File Browser, then right clicking and selecting the Copy command.

When I came to move the files back after the fresh install, I was mortified to find that all the file modification dates had changed to the date I copied them! I've lost all the original file dates, which was the principal way I sorted my files. I guess there's no way of getting it back? It seems that Linux does not store File Creation dates either so I'm stuffed.

General :: Write Shell Script To Check The Modified Date Of A File ?

Jun 17, 2011

I have two linux servers, they are backup together.

1. Server 1 have 3 files with name: file1, file2, file3 in the path: /etc/sysconfig/network-script/.

2. Server 2 have 3 files with name and path are the same as server 1.

- How to make a script to copy 3 files at server1 to overwrite on server2. But before overwrite, this script will check and compare the last modified date of these 3 files(on server1 and server2). if the modified date of file1, file2 or file3 on server1 is newer than 3 files on server2 then overwrite process will do, if not, will do nothing.

- see my script as below: it works find now but just overwrite. not check last modified date.

I know that I can set write access off with chmod, but that would also mean that I can't edit the file any more. What I would like to achieve is to make it impossible to remove a file on which I am working.

I have made the dir in terminal using sudo mkdir

General :: Prevent A User From Seeing A File In A Directory Listing?

May 3, 2011

I have, for example, a folder called "MyFolder" and it contains 3 files: MyFile1, MyFile2, MyFile3. The only file that I do NOT want a particular user/group to even see that it exists is, for exmple, MyFile2.So, when they do a directory listing on MyFolder, they should only see MyFile1 and MyFile3. How can this be done in Linux? The important thing is that it is not just preventing them from "executing" MyFile2, but to prevent them from even knowing that it exists by not including it in a directory listing. This is a simpified example using one file, but in reality, I have lots of files and some of those that I want to block are also subfolders. It is very important for me to hide the existence of certain files/folders when the user does a directory listing. It's also important that the files stay in their current folder (that is, I can't use a workaround which requires moving all the files into a separate folder and then securing that folder).

Slackware :: Prevent File System Corruption On Hard Lock-up?

Apr 5, 2010

I've recently had my file system irrecoverably corrupted after a hard lock-up. This has happened to me before, a couple weeks ago, and both times I've had to reinstall. I don't know what is causing the lock-ups (possibly the binary nvidia driver..), but I would like my file system to be intact or at least recoverable next time it happens. What is the "safest" way to mount things?

I'll be using ext3 with data=journal, but I've read that disk write caching combined with a kernel crash or power loss can still screw things up. Supposedly, mounting with barrier=1 helps some, but doesn't work with LVM? Would it be wise to turn off disk write caching completely? I understand there's a performance penalty, but if it helps keep the file system consistent in case of disaster.

General :: Removing Write Permission Does Not Prevent Root From Writing To File

Feb 3, 2010

I just noticed on my Ubuntu machine (ext3 filesystem) that removing write permissions from a file does not keep root from writing to it. Is this a general rule of UNIX file permissions? Or specific to Ubuntu? Or a misconfiguration on my machine? Writing to the file fails (as expected) if I do this from my normal user account. Is this normal behavior? Is there a way to prevent root from accidentally writing to a file (Preferably using normal filesystem mechanisms, not AppArmor, etc.)

I understand that root has total control over the system and can, eg, change the permissions on any file.My question is whether currently set permissions are enforced on code running as root. The idea is the root user preventing her/himself from accidentally writing to a file. also understand that one should not be logged in as root for normal operations.

Yast is showing some problems regarding KDE 4.6.3. you can ignore them.

Ubuntu :: Backup NTFS Files Modified After A Certain Date?

May 14, 2010

I clone my entire notebook hdd once a month to a USB drive with an identical disk once a month using dd. I would like to find a way to automatically or manually do incremental backups at shorter intervals.

The first problem is that my incremental backup drive is not the same as my full backup drive (which is my clone). Is there some way to backup or copy all files on a document partition modified after a certain date?

The second problem is that my document partition is NTFS-3G. I guess this could be done pretty easily using "dump" if I stored my docs on ext. [I don't because I want to make sure that my docs are accessible from any machine (say in an Internet cafe) should my MacBook die and I need to rip out the hard drive and run to do my homework on another system; that is why I keep my docs on my Vista partition].
