Ubuntu :: Kill Java And Prevent It From Respawning?
Jul 19, 2010
I run Freenet occasionally, but not all the time. Freenet doesn't run unless told to, but Java loads on every boot and sits there and hogs resources for no reason whatsoever. What's worse, as soon as I kill it with fire (sudo kill -9 "PID"), it respawns within seconds. How do I make Java not load unless required? And die and stay dead when I want it dead?

Installing 11.2 from KDE LiveCD on an IBM ThinkCenter with 3.2Gb CPU and 1Gb RAM. Ubuntu 9.04 on first two partitions. I go through the configuration, click to 'install': Install display bars remain blank. After 2-3 minutes, black screen with scroll of attempted installation pieces and the error message: "Respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 min." Freeze.
Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Does anyone know how to deal with this? If you need more info, I will provide. Though it seems this is not an unusual problem when booting an installed system, there's no mention of it happening during installation.

I have a java process running in background. I have no java dependent program opened and even if I had, this program should be killed if I kill the Java process. top shows that Java causes almost 90% cpu usage.

The only way I can imagine is to restart, but this might happen again.

Just installed 10.04. I tried to put a trash bin on my desktop, and it completely borked my system.
I did a ctrl-F2, gconf-editor, app->nautilus->desktop, and checked trashbin visible.
After that icons kept spawning in my panel. Nautilus will start. I lost all of the icons from my desktop. I have logging out, and resetting the trashbin visibility. Nothing seems to fix the problem.

the process is mcelog. When I do as root kill -9 2323 which is pid of mcelog the process is not killed. I tried doing the same from top, press K and enter pid of mcelog. doing ps auwx | grep mcelog I see there are several results. I tried killing all of them like kill -9 2355 2341 3425 2345. But re-running the above commands still shows them as running. How else would I troubleshoot this to avoid restarting of the box.

I have spent some time reviewing the numerous posts that have this error. However, several of the other posts seem to be able to get a step farther than I can. While booting, the machine produces the following error:"INIT: ID "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"Other thread posts have described being to type ctrl+c to login. However, I get hung up when I attempt to login as root:"Penguin login: root

My Red Hat Enterprise Server ws release 3 machine is receiving this error message.
Quote:
From what I understand it is because it is failing to load a service or program so the system overrides it to prevent it from eating up my systems resources.
My question is; how do I isolate the problem process in order to fix it?

If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.
Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

I try to install the java plugin but the java test pages show not installed. I have tried the openjdk-6-jdk package and the Oracle/Sun 1.6.0_26 version to no avail.
Is there some good instructions page someplace? I have yet to find a set of instructions that provides something clear that works.

Code: ~ $ /usr/java/jre1.6.0_25/bin/java -showversion Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.

This is my first post and I'm pretty new on Debian. I had used Ubunu for a while now and I've decided to move on Debian Squeeze. But I've one problem: I've a Java programm to install and the installer is GUI Java based. When I run the script, I've the next message:
Preparing to install. Extracting the JRE from the installer archive.Unpacking the JRE.Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive.Configuring the installer for this system's environment.Launching installer Graphical installers are not supported by the VM. The console mode will be used instead. Preparing CONSOLE Mode Installation. But this program is not able to run the installation in console mode.
I've tried to install sun-java6-jre but without success.Has anyone an idea to help me install this programm? My Configuration: Debian Squeeze 6.0 amd64.

I would like to install JRE-6u25 on ubuntu.
When I go on the website I see only RPM and another download called:
linux self extracting. The file name for this one is: JRE-6u25-linux-i586.bin
It says to restart the browser after install.
I want to install java to play minecraft. I'm having some speed issues using openJDK.
Would the self extracting file work for minecraft standalone? (I tried playing in a browser without success).
Is using the self extracting file the same as using say the RPM?

Since the OpenOffice quickstarter effectively disables the shutdown and hibernate buttons under Lucid, I put a command into my .logout to kill the quickstarter:
Code:
kill `ps aux | awk '/soffice.bin/ && (/quickstart/ || /splash-pipe/) {print $2}'`
This works fine if I execute it manually, but in the .logout file it seems to have no effect.

Sometimes I find a process named 'sh' running under my username with the status 'zombie' waiting channel 'do_exit' on my system. Its ID increments by 4 every time System Monitor updates its display.
Today, it was there immediately after booting The only thing I did after logging in is start the System Monitor
I can't kill it since its ID changes too fast.
I don't know how it gets started, but it bothers me since it is behavior I would expect from something that is trying to hide.
If I hover over its name, the tool tip contains 'sh'

I have this problem where I keep losing internet and the only way to fix is to restart the computer, I think it's because my wifi card isn't completely compatible with ndiswrapper. Anyways when ever this happens I am unable to shutdown properly because ubuntu says firefox-bin is still running, when I try to shutdown it just hangs. I tried killing firefox-bin with the system monitor but that didn't work, then I tried killing it the terminal by using killall -9 firefox-bin. This too doesn't work. How can I kill firefox-bin?
