Jul 7, 2010Sometimes when starting applications, especially with Wine, the screen resizes to a much lower resolution. Sometimes when I close the application & usually when it crashes/I have to kill it, the screen stays at that much lower resolution. To get my normal 1900*1200 resolution back I have to delete all the applets I've put in the top menu bar to for there to be enough space for the menu to appear for me to select System>Prefs>Monitors.How can I prevent an application from altering my resolution & just force it to run windowed, or at a higher resolution?

Background Info: Normally the microphone doesn't work with some applications such as Empathy or the new Google Talk plugin for Linux. The workaround I'm using (and I don't know why this works) is to unlock the left and right channels in Pavucontrol and set one channel to zero, and to boost volume I set the other to max.
Issue: The Google Talk plugin is resetting the channels to be locked together. This is pretty frustrating because now they have free calling and I have no cell reception in my dorm room.

Jun 11, 2011I don't want to install alacarte to do this. I've copied the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications that I don't want appearing in the gnome 3 applications list (e.g., email settings for evolution), and added 'NoDisplay=true' to the end of each desktop file. Restarted gnome shell, even tried logging out and back in, but they still appear there. Previously, in gnome2, desktop files under the home dir superceded the global directory. Do I need to edit them directly as root to effect the changes, or could this be a selinux problem?

Nov 19, 2010I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Obviously I have openoffice installed under linux, but the wine app cannot see it. How can I make the wine app see across the emulation layer into linux to see the app it needs? Feb 9, 2010I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.

Feb 14, 2010Having had many problems with pulseaudio on a fresh karmic install, I followed some recommended instructions for removing pulse and using alsa (URL...). unfortunately, both pulse and alsa have gone and i'm left with oss which seems to work fine. I'd like to have alsa back though.When I open amarok, it plays the frst song on the playlist then pops up a series of 'could not initialise sound engine' messages, and crashes.

So once restart I normally do:

Aug 2, 2010Ubuntu 10.04, 64 bit. Sound was working well, thought I would run some scripts [URL] to install the latest version of alsa, but now I have no sound at all. The command aplay -l gives:
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
and the command
cat /proc/asound/version
produces:
cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory
I no longer have a directory /proc/asound.If I open the window system>preferences>sound
there are no entries under hardware or output.I have tried to re-install alsa with this command:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss linux-sound-base alsamixergui
but still no sound.

May 27, 2011I'm having trouble after installing Lubuntu-desktop on top of a Ubuntu Server (64 bit). about the reason for this abomination of distributions is to achieve 64 bit Lubuntu. I used to run Ubuntu 64 straight, but didn't like Unity at all; Arch Linux was great up until now, but I'd like to settle down and focus more on productivity.
The situation is thus: I cannot manage to make my X-Fi USB sound card work without hacks, and at best it only works in some applications. I *think* it may be a bug in ALSA, but I had no problem in the latest versions of Ubuntu (11.04 as of this) and Xubuntu even (11.04?).
I can currently only play media in VLC media player using the following hack in my ~./asoundrc

Mar 16, 2011I am using linux mint 9 with kernel 2.6.32.29. I upgraded from alsa 1.0.23 to 1.0.24 using the alsa upgrade script. Sound was working just fine before on my Asus Xonar DS, However, my nvidia geforce 430's hdmi audio card is not recognized in 1.0.23 but it is in 1.0.24. Though the card is detected, I have no sound on either cards now.

May 8, 2010I installed 10.04 LTS with great succes on my very old compac armada 500 laptop, but experience the problem of the hanging diskcheck at startup at regural intervals. I read this is a reported bug. My question is: is there any file or methot by which I can prevent diskcheck from running at startup, or put the frequency of running at a very very large number at least until the bug is fixed ?
