Ubuntu :: Possible To Copyright Bash Scripts?

Apr 14, 2010

I have created some bash programs (scripts). Can they be copyrighted, if yes then is it mandatory to use GPL as bash (the interpreter) is GPL'd or they can be under any license, even close source?

General :: Difference Between Copyright And Licenses?

May 20, 2011

I think that here was a misunderstanding between the copyright and the license. In short, only my opinion ( I am not a lawyer), it is not illegal to post links to copyrighted material (as long as the license allows it). If it would be, I had to remove the links in my sig to Slackware, XFCE and zsh. All that software is copyrighted. I can post links to that because the license allows me to spread that software. Even GPL licensed software is copyrighted. But I think that as long as the license is not clear, links to copyrighted software should not be posted at LQ.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: DVD Ripper For Video Files (Not Copyright Protected)

Jan 14, 2010

I'm looking for the best way to pull some video files off of DVDs onto the desktop. These are not copyright protected. I don't want a program that plays the movie and then make a duplicate like most windows programs these are TOO slow. Also if I could shrink and change the format that would be a huge bonus.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Downloaded Videos/movies (non-copyright)

Feb 22, 2010

I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Freezes On USB Load At Syslinux Copyright Message?

Jan 13, 2011

I have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.

Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)

When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)

I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.

I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From USB Stops At Copyright Line During Boot, No Error?

Aug 30, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a computer with Vista SP2, my BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows.It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Not Booting - Getting Black Screen With Copyright Notice Stays At Screen Forever

Nov 3, 2010

I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.

I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

If you remove -t (timeout) option from the read, both loops look the same!

Programming :: Run Multiple Bash And Php Scripts From A Bash Script?

Jul 25, 2011

I have written quite a few separate bash & scripts and php scripts that up to now I have run from cron jobs. However I have to estimate how long each takes to run, before running the next and so it probably takes much longer than necessary to run them all. They have to run in order.

Now there are so many I am thinking it would be better to have a master bash script that would run one after the other, but I am not sure how to get the master script to wait before starting to run the next script. Is this possible and is there a command that will make the script wait between bash and php scripts , for them to finish, before running the next?

Slackware :: Bash - Random Headers When Starting Bash In X?

I have searched and searched and maybe I don't know how to articulate this issue with out just posting the problem I'm having. Every time I bring up a terminal window I get the following "Header"

declare -x COLORTERM="gnome-terminal"
declare -x CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH="/usr/lib64/qt/include"
declare -x DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS="unix:abstract=/tmp/dbus-xSFd6zqrYQ,guid=dc5e07974559da016842742900000090"
declare -x DISPLAY=":0.0"

To be honest I cheated and used the .bashrc / .profile files from Ubuntu and all was working fine for a while now and it seems something changed to cause this... any ideas on why I am getting this? I checked my .bashrc and my /etc/profile and it doesn't look like anything is amiss..

Programming :: Bash: Get Filename And Extension Using Bash?

I would like to get the filename (without extension) and the extension separately. The best solution I found so far is:

Let FILE="thefilenameofsomefilesfor_instance.txt"

Code:

NAME=`echo "$FILE" | cut -d'.' -f1`
EXTENSION=`echo "$FILE" | cut -d'.' -f2`

I think it would be better to count the len and remove 3 chars to right to get the extension, but it can be macintosh filenames with have 4 chars for extensions.

shutdown 23:45
#done (yea just one line...)

How could I make sure my password is given to the sudo response without manually entering it ever time?

How could one make this script run automatically i.e. on startup every time.
