Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From USB Stops At Copyright Line During Boot, No Error?

Aug 30, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a computer with Vista SP2, my BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows. It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.

Ubuntu Installation :: NTFS Error Stops Dual-boot Install On Fake-raid?

Feb 23, 2011

I am attempting to install Maverick on an older pc. It has (2) mirrored 153 GB SATA drives. I set aside 33GB for a linux partition, by shrinking the partition in Vista.

Choosing to "Install along side windows" is not an available option. I can only choose use who disk, or use empty area. I choose use the empty area, and the Ubiquity installer gets hung up when attempting to format the empty space as EXT4. When I scroll up on the output I notice some error messages referencing NTFS. When I use Gparted it shows a possible problem.

Quote:

Probably /etc/mtab is missing. It's too risky to continue. You
might try an another Linux ditro.

Unable to read the contents of this file system!Because of this some operations may be unavailable.

The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support: ntfsprogs.

I ran chkdsk /r on the Vista partiton, in case there was a problem there. The issue still persists.

OpenSUSE Install :: Stops At Boot But Can Boot As Root?

Jun 24, 2010

I'm new to OpenSuse and also fairly new to Linux in general. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 on a secondary machine and I really like it. However, during booting it stops somewhere half way, giving me only a black page but with a functioning cursor arrow. I can't do anything with it though. I re-booted in recovery mood and managed to boot up as root using the command 'startx'. How can I get back to "my own" log-in from here, with my own settings etc? There's obviously something missing during boot-up but where do I look?

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error / Failed To Find Boot Disk

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error, then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself. Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Just Stops On Plain Blue F Screen

Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.

OpenSUSE Install :: 128 Gb Boot Error / Installation Froze At 92% And After The Laptop Wouldn't Boot?

I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically. Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.

The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.

Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.

Installation :: Boot Error Kernel Panic Can`t Boot Cdusb

Sep 2, 2010

i used dual boot system (xp + ubuntu 10.04) and decided to replace them with jolicloud os and then it started In about 86% of jolicloud install it showed me error of hdd partition. I tried different versions of partion type, used also option to install on entire hdd - none of my tries actually worked (also with many hdd formating tries) so I was able to use only usb as live user for Jolicloud, and i burned ubuntu iso on disk - on boot up showed boot up error, i checked BIOS and everything seemed to be ok with boot order. So after many tries i took my old Gutsy Gibon 7.10 live cd. I first updated it with LTS version (8.04 Hardy Heron) and after that I updated it to 10.04 but it seemed to not finish when i saw some error in terminal and installer was exiting 13 minutes before finish then it had kernel panic - fuuuuck! After that i tried to download small versions of linux like Austrumi and puppy linux , but it showed me boot error or cd didnt even open install dialog without showing boot error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 As Dual Boot With Win7 / Stops After Setting Partition Size

May 5, 2011

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).

I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update Boot To Grub Command Line

Sep 29, 2010

I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Doesn't Boot - Loads Grub Command Line?

Jan 1, 2010

My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems. For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.

Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual-boot On A RAID-0 Array - Drops To GRUB Command Line?

May 28, 2011

I've recently had trouble reinstalling my Ubuntu system as I was getting various unusual errors as described in my old thread here. I thought it was probably something to do with my RAID-0 array which was pre-installed on my laptop from purchase being corrupted or something like that (if it's possible). I decided to simplify things for myself (not understanding RAID arrays much) so I just removed the RAID array and installed Windows and Ubuntu on the now separate hard disks. It worked fine.

I noticed quite a significant performance drop, however, with even Ubuntu boots taking longer than 30 seconds despite my laptop being both high-spec and only a few months old. Windows, as you can imagine, was dreadfully slow. I wasn't entirely convinced that this was entirely due to the loss of the RAID array - as even low-spec laptops with presumably no RAID arrays are supposed to boot Ubuntu in under 30 seconds apparently - but I read that RAID-0 arra

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Stops The Boot Sporadically?

Jan 28, 2010

i got the following issue. I have Ubuntu 9.10 (x64) on an AMD Phenom II X4 with a Gigabyte mainboard (chipset AMD 785G) and a SATA II hard disk. Kernel version is 2.6.31-17-generic. After selecting Ubuntu from grub boot menu, I get a black screen and that's basically it.

This is a snipplet from syslog:

Code:

Jan 28 16:46:19 mind-the-gap kernel: imklog 4.2.0, log source = /var/run/rsyslog/kmsg started.
Jan 28 16:46:19 mind-the-gap rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="862" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] (re)start

[code]....

The odd think is, that this happens just from time to time (~50% of all boot attempts). Booting into failsave mode does work every time. Booting an older kernel (not failsave) doesn't work every time either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.
