Is there a way to find out information about a process based on the command used to run it?
Ideally I would like to get processes ID %CPU and memory usage back. I have written a short shell script which does this but I wonderd was there a command that did this.
Here's my shell script
Code:
#!/bin/bash
ExpectedArgs=1
ARGS=$#
if [ $ARGS != $ExpectedArgs ]

I randomly get system crashes of a fresh Fedora 15 install.
I cannot reproduce, however.
Where would I find information on system crashed (kernel panics)?
Where can I find comprehensive information on optimizing Linux? I keep searching online but seem to get only to performance monitoring. I don't want to run a lighter version of Linux or upgrade my hardware! Just want to get my current distro and future ones I might install to run at its best.

Back in the old days of PC-DOS 3.1, computers are much simpler than today's. I can learn a lot of how File System works with tools like PCTools, Norton Disk Doctor, and [URL]. Have been working exclusive in corporate database application area for over a decade, my knowledge of how these stuff work is diminishing. Standard-clean OS (Windows, Linux) installation is all I can do now. And it starts to cause me many data-loss troubles, when I have to perform something that I don't have much insight, such as install and remove peer linux os or move and resize partitions.
I'm looking for books, web resources, or communities where I can educate myself on how various file system works, for which I can have in-depth answer to questions such as:
How to remove ubuntu and grub2 ? (I recently did that, but with a lot of frustration when I was not really sure what I was doing and confront with some scary error message like "Missing BootMgr" What kind of disk-partitioning operation can be performed non-destructively, and why ? What is Active partition ? Primary Parition ? Extended Partition ? How it stored on the disk. There are many free partitioning tools out there, which one is safe to used ? NTFS, Ext3, Ext4, .. What the differences ? How to choose it wisely.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI think that here was a misunderstanding between the copyright and the license. In short, only my opinion ( I am not a lawyer), it is not illegal to post links to copyrighted material (as long as the license allows it). If it would be, I had to remove the links in my sig to Slackware, XFCE and zsh. All that software is copyrighted. I can post links to that because the license allows me to spread that software. Even GPL licensed software is copyrighted. But I think that as long as the license is not clear, links to copyrighted software should not be posted at LQ.

I don't want a program that plays the movie and then make a duplicate like most windows programs these are TOO slow. Also if I could shrink and change the format that would be a huge bonus.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.
Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)
When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)
I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.
I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.

I'm trying to figure out before I purchase a laptop which laptop (if any) will work sufficiently well with centOS. The software I'll be running is only qualified on centOS.Where do I look to find such information?Specifically I'm considering the hp online configurable dv5t laptop with the i7-640M processor.
I'm planning to leave it in a closet most of the time and VNC over VPN to get to it.Digressing still further, the performance for a single threaded application as well as the price and power consumption for "always on" make it a good choice for a server applicaion... not to mention the battery backup in the event of power failure. It may not be designed to operate under high CPU load for extended periods of time so I my use external fans to improve ventilation around the unit or take other steps to mitigate a cooling deficiency.Digressing yet still further, yes I do need the performance of the i7 so lower power processors are not an option. I just really only need one or sometimes 2 cores at most making the 32nm i7-640M ideal.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu on a computer with Vista SP2, my BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows.It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
