Apr 28, 2011

I've noticed something, and hoped there was a work around.when I write a simple bash script, and run it, if I close the terminal i ran the bash script inside, the bash script stops. What are the solutions for this? Basically I want to run my bash script and close the terminal, keep the bash script running.

General :: SSH Connection From BASH Script Stops Further BASH Script Commands

Dec 3, 2010

What happens when the script executes is that the ssh connection works and parks me at the remote hosts's shell login. Therefore, the "firefox" command refuses to execute. I need to know how to make the "ssh" connection occur, stay open, and go into the background so that the rest of the script can execute. If I could also do this with the "firefox" line so that the entire term window could be closed would also be helpful.

To be honest I cheated and used the .bashrc / .profile files from Ubuntu and all was working fine for a while now and it seems something changed to cause this... any ideas on why I am getting this? I checked my .bashrc and my /etc/profile and it doesn't look like anything is amiss..

Programming :: Awk Commands Inside Of A Bash Script ?

May 4, 2011

im pretty sure this is a remedial task for many of you but im having an issue with arrays from a shell script being accessed in an awk command. im pretty good with shell scripting but i am embarrassingly unfamiliar with awk. so here's the meat of the script...

Code:

I am trying to take an input file of ip addresses and corresponding netmasks and put it into a format to be loaded onto a juniper switch. the result should look something like this.. x.x.x.x/netmask using the cidr notation. no matter what subnet is provided though, /32 always gets appended to the end of the ip even when it should be /16, /24, etc... also, the cisco part works fine so that doesnt need any attention.

General :: Using Shortcuts/alias Inside A Bash Command?

E.g. Suppose I have to routinely copy a directory to another remote directory on a remote machine. The remote machine name is quite long as well as the directory path to which I want to copy the files into.So the command to do scp would look like this[URL]Now I want to do some sort of aliasing (say "ecp") so that I just need to pass the source_directory name and the ecp command and do my job

Here are the errors: cp: cannot stat `~/html/CVP_dadamail/.dada_files/.logs/errors.txt': No such file or directory rm: cannot remove `...': No such file or directory

The for statement is a placeholder as I have same file to backup out of several directories. using "bash -x scriptname" -OR- inserting echos, I can see I've constructed the strings properly. Believing it might be related to the hidden directories, I tried setting the shopt "glob" options to no avail.

Ultimately I'll add the other directories to the for loop and then run this from a cron job, so if you see potential pitfalls knowing I'm headed in that direction...believe construct would be

General :: Bash Script - Stops After While Loop?

May 13, 2010

Totally new to programming (as of this morning) so please bear with me I have a bash script that stops working after the first while loop.

#part 1
While

#part 2
While
doMOreMoreMoredone

Every arguement above the first loop completes (including the first loop itself) but anything below (incuding the second while loop) doesn't finish. I know that it isn't a problem with an unending loop... it seems to be something about the While loop that I'm not understanding... but I can't figure it out. I just need arguments below the first while loop to take place.

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Ubuntu Servers :: Su As Backup User Inside Of Bash Script - Lock And Flush Tables On A Mysql Db

Jan 23, 2010

I am attempting to write a backup script that will do the following:

1) lock and flush tables on a mysql db
2) dump the db to a file
3) unlock the tables
4) rsync the file to offsite storage

It all seems to be going well. However, obviously I don't want to setup ssh to the storage server on another network as the root user without a password. so I am attempting to su as the backup user inside of the script but when I try to run the script everything happens as it should until I try to so.. then it jumps out of the script .. akss me to login as the backup user.. proceeds to rsync to the offsite storage it does all this and then resumes execiting the script. it is not going to be setup as a cron job. it will be executed manually. assuming that is the case, how can I get the script to run without prompting for a password?

Here is what I've come up with so far... assuming that the script is run as root and the identity of the backup user will need to be assumed inside the script without perstering the user to enter the backup user's password.

General :: Bash - Using Terminal Vs KDE?

Im used to using nautilus within centos but have recently just got a VPS and quickly realising that using a KDE is unacceptable in this environment. Although I do find it so much quicker doing things like folder permissions in KDE rather than typing it all out in the terminal? Everyone I speak to says, use the terminal and I should learn this way as opposed to using the KDE, but theres certain things I just dont get

How is it possible to make quick changes to scripts and viewing them in a browser etc , without a mouse or using KDE? and only using a terminal?? I am wondering how to develop websites just using the terminal?

How can it be quicker to type out/view permissions etc in the terminal when its instant and just a few clicks in the KDE?
