After playing with various Linux distributions over the past 3 weeks (mostly Ubuntu) I decided on Fedora as the keeper. However, when it comes to linux I'm about as green as they come. I installed KDE Fedora today and managed to get Firefox and Flash installed without much trouble. However, I'm trying to download the newest version of Thunderbird but after a lot of looking, how to do it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSince about half a year ago I downloaded the 11th version of Fedora from the official web page but when trying to install it (I tried booting from cd) it loads everything all right, I get the fedora loading screen, but when it finishes the loading remains so, I doesnt mark errors or anything, I get the cursor on the black screen, the HDD LED turns off and then it remains just like that, I left it up to 1 full hour and from there nothing happens, also tried the ubuntu 9.04 and it is exactly the same, after loadint everything ok, it reaches a point where the screen goes black with a cursor and the HDD LED goes out , the cursor keeps going and it gets stuck.i readed a few time ago that this happens because my video card (which was integrated in the mb) did not support these versions of linux, then i bought an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE 128mb card and same thing happened, a couple of months ago i was using a P4GEMX ASUS motherboard with 760 RAM and HDD 160 gb IDE drive. I gave up and leave it for peace.
Today I use an D865GBF Intel motherboard with 1GB of RAM, same video card Nvidia Geforce FX 5200LE and passes the same thing, also tried to install Windows 7 and reaches the point where it shows the wallpaper just before the installation options but nothing happens and it stays right there .. the pointer disappears, I gets stuck in the wallpaper and yet again...the HDD LED goes out, I am very confused, I changed every piece of the pc, new motherboard, new rams and nothing, the only thing that I am still using of the old pc is the hard drive, also tried another HDD, one of 60gb GHola que tal, very good afternoon to all, is the first time I write in the forum and my problem is this:

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter a few days of wrestling the xorg.conf file and the akmods/kmod apps, finally have it running properly with a dual display/one graphic card setup BUT only from init 3 and then startx. Trying with init 5 shows a segmentation fault right after recognizing the kmod driver but the sequence keeps running until it after it hits the anacron OK portion. This occurs with an NVIDIA 6800 XT which is covered by the 180.25 driver. Other forum Q&A suggests the wrong driver but NVIDIA recommends this one.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.
Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)
When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)
I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.
I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.
This is our first time choosing and installing linux. Our other servers are all windows 2008 x64. We were told to install fedora 13. I can only find a download for the desktop version and we're looking for the SERVER x64 download. Could I please get a link?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 12 on a 3 year old Dell Demension 1100. It only has a CD reader so I bought a 5 CD set and proceeded to install. Everything works fine until the end of the initial part of the installation where it asks to reboot the computer, the program says it has installed correctly. On rebooting the command line appears and asks for localhost log in. Problem is during the installation the program didn't ask for a user name only a root password. I am unable to access this and there are still another 4 CD's to go.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu on a computer with Vista SP2, my BIOS supports booting from a USB drive. Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows.It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had done the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 online and couldn't boot to newest kernel and had to select the previous one in GRUB. From what I have read it may be because of NVIDIA drivers or some conflict. Anyways,I did a fresh install of 10.10 from the Live CD overriding my 10.04-to-10.10-online-updated partition so I do not have an option to boot older Linux kernels now. I was wondering if the Live CD could be used to install any previous linux kernels for the new installed Ubuntu 10.10 system.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
I am traying to install VLC on RHEL 5.5 I have installed the rpmforge repos rpms.I get this error message everytime:

Ok so i've got a main sound card which is include in my motherboard but it dosn't working(Intel Corporation 82801G)And I've got second sound card which working(C-Media Electronics Inc CM873, but ubuntu detect only first card (Intel) and try use it.Earlier i used alsaconf to set main soundcard but in the newest alsasound version there gone.So i just dont have a sound.I don't know why but sometimes when i turn on my computer sound is it.But after restart there gone.I've got Ubuntu 9.04
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, and the latest kernel upgrade (xxxx.22) won't start the system because it can't find the hard disks. It ends up with a prompt from (initramfs).The computer has an MSI board with Intel P4 Dual CPU, and a Phoenix Award BIOS marked W7037 IMS V1.2, dated 091604 (Sep16/04). I doubt that a newer BIOS that will fix the problem, but if anyone knows I could try to find a floppy drive and a diskette, because they require that to install the newer BIOS (ver 1.3). Does any one have a better method? Is it still possible to get the previous kernel version until they fix this bug (if they ever will)?
Is there a way to change the boot sequence in GRUB2 so the original kernel would be the default even if the rest of the software has been updated? Since 10.04 has several bugs and annoyances, may be it's time to change to another distribution (I've tried Mint 9, but it has much of the same, like having to enter the password if I take a short break from the computer). Many questions at once, but less and less things are functioning with each new revision. For instance to use the scanner I must go back to 8.04, or use WINDOWS! (The scanner is the only reason why I have Windows on the computer).
this is a new problem with issues that started when I upgraded to 10.10. Originally, GRUB wouldn't load after that upgrade, but that was fixed here. Once GRUB was working properly, there was a problem with the 2.6.35-28 generic kernel. When I tried to boot through it, I would only get an ubuntu command line.
Luckily the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel worked just fine and I could log in and load my ubuntu desktop with no issues. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 to see if that would correct whatever was going on. The installation was completed without any apparent issues, GRUB works, XP Pro works, and the older 2.6.32-22 generic kernel allows me to boot into 11.04.
Unfortunately, another new kernel, 2.6.38-8 generic, is not working properly. I snaped some pictures of what happens when I try to use this kernel:

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand
Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager
It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.
Anyway - here is the new error

If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).

I am wondering if ubuntu 8.04LTS can be installed on a 2010 Terra A20 ZaReason with Atom processor with wireless n or do I have to wait until Ubuntu 10.04LTS comes out in april? I would like to install it and then upgrade to lucid when it comes out. I am prepared to do a big updates and downloads. And I am asking this before I start downloading 8.04LTS.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! If I boot from the 10.04 live CD, all partitions on the hard drive are visible, mountable, and pass all file system checks.
What i think is that maybe it is possible, but however some of the hardware features may not be supported by Fedora unless the Kernel can be patched such as back-light, iSight etc etc.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have used ubuntu for som years now, I thought It could be nice to try a kde focused linux distro, so I installed mandriva spring.
The problem is that only the ubuntu LTS boots, and the mandriva part just stops after (and I don't know where to start, and what is relevant to write)
So I just installed Mandriva and was trying to install alien so I don't have to deal with source anymore. This happened, tried other sources and the same error. Maybe I'm overlooking something simple, but this is killing me.
so, First I wget (url for alien). It finishes.
Then, I start the installation
