What I am concerned about is if my files would still be accessible after a clean reformat and reinstall of Ubuntu on my system. Would Ubuntu(Karmic) recognise this fresh install as a new system and open a new account on Ubuntu One, rendering my previous files as lost?
View 5 RepliesI save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.
Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:
#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.
#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !
I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.
Why would modules not load automatically ?
After doing a complete backup, I ran the update overnight. Ubuntu 10.04 was on my computer the next morning. While poking around, I noticed that the Kontact KAddressBook had no entries;Instead, I had display with three columns;Column #1, "Address Books" had the cryptic entry 'std.vcf' Clicking on it did nothing. Apparently, all my addresses were gone. Solution: Finding and Reloading the Addresses My addresses were in the vCard format, located in
/home/MYUSERNAME/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
After checking to see that my backup file of std.vcf was the same size as the system file, I did the following, modified from instructions provided by Joao G. Peixoto joaogpeixoto Within the Kontact KAddressBook, I deleted the empty std.vcf addressbook; Edit Delete Address Book Then I generated a new address book to hold my addresses;

im trying to clone my ubuntu system installed in a laptop in case the laptop crashes.
But, first of all: when i try to restore the system in a new PC, could be incompatibilities because the hardware of the broken laptop and the new laptop is different?
I dont mind if i have to buy another laptop with the same processor type (i386, etc), but, for example, the type of the RAM could be cause of problems?
can i do a complete system restore on a toshiba netbook with linux op system, as ive bought one with admin name and password still on it, and i dont know the password to use the admin side of the netbook?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using my F11 box primarily for browsing. And I have freakishly low RAM (256). All was good up until recently. Now Im experiencing a lot of HD access with a lot of grinding and HD light flashing at different intervals when going online. I've searched but found no mention of viruses that would do this. I would typically associate this with a lot of downloading, as with software update. However I've disabled this program (since the box was in a stable state for my intended purpose and I did not want to invite new maintenance).
Any ideas what could cause this? It can become so intensive that the mouse is practically disabled and any attempts to close a window take upwards of 15 minutes. I frequently receive the Firefox message that the application has become unresponsive, do I wish to kill the program or wait.

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.
In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.

I've got Ubuntu 11.04 on a 40G hard disk in dual boot with a Windows XP on a 300G hard disk.
I've got back data with an USB key from a broken Windows Seven, then I've shutdown my ubuntu, but it has difficulties to stop (a mp3 player, which doesn't work well, has already damaged my Ubuntu previously). As the title says, i was in the middle of the upgrade, when the system froze then a black screen with the text similar to: starting apache ..... starting ..... ... in that way, but with more text, i could not remember the exact details. When i boot up, it say /dev not found, and other errors, and a weird black screen that seems to be loading modules appears, but never finishes and starts to act strange. Any way i can get this fixed without just copying my data and reimaging my partition.

They are black rectangles, with white borders, and a forbidden sign in the middle. I can't figure out what program is related to them, and they don't respond to left or right click. Can anyone point me in some direction? I thought about using programs like xprop/xwininfo to figure out what program they are related to and kill it, but these don't work for system tray, only for windows.

At my connection speed, it will take about two days to download all of the packages I use. Is there any way to get rid of this driver and restore my system back to how it was... about twenty minutes before I posted this, without booting in the system?
I had a working ubuntu 10 on my old laptop. Not sure what's happened but now whenever you start any app, the app starts in the foreground, then immediately the desktop gains the focus. This happens all the time on any app that is either already running or started from scratch. Thus making the system unusable.

I got a rather big problem since an attempt to upgrade.My debian version is 8.0.I upgraded when apt proposed the change. I did that in two steps, with apt-get upgrade and then apt-get dist-upgrade, with the installation of a new kernel. I moved from 3.2.0-4-686-pae to 3.16.0-4-686-pae.Since the upgrade, I can't boot my system any longer.During the boot sequence, this message appears with a countdown (it's copied by hand) :

At the end of the countdown, the boot sequence starts again, and ends up on an invite to log in as root in rescue mode. I can't connect (maybe due to some azerty/qwerty issue, I got a French keyboard. I tried to type in "qwerty mode", with no success (the password is not prompted)).I can connect with the 3.2 kernel however, selecting it form the grub interface. I can't log in in rescue mode either, but with this kernel the boot sequence goes on and I can log as a regular user or as root, at the end of the boot sequence. There is no X, but the system seems to work.What could I do to make the system boot properly with the new kernel, or to go back to the 3.2 version ?

I installed Win7 after Ubuntu (10.10). I attempted to reload grub so that I would be able to run them dual boot and now I can't load anything.
I followed the guide here: [url] and went threw it a couple of times now to make sure it wasn't user error.
I am using a live cd from 10.04 because it's the only one I have. Any chance that's why it isn't working properly? I wouldn't think so, but I assume that it's possible.
If that is the case; Any way to solve it without using the live cd? I cannot burn a new disk because I have to boot from disk to use my computer right now.

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

At some point while trying install/uninstall I got a message that said to check the broken filter to see which file is broken. At present, I cannot install/uninstall programs. I do not know how to access the broken filter. And I cannot run apt-get install -f
I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.
