General :: Broken Desktop In Ubuntu 10 - System Unusable

Aug 19, 2010

I had a working ubuntu 10 on my old laptop. Not sure what's happened but now whenever you start any app, the app starts in the foreground, then immediately the desktop gains the focus. This happens all the time on any app that is either already running or started from scratch. Thus making the system unusable.

Ubuntu Installation :: Continuous Krunner Segfaults - Taking 100% Of The CPU - Desktop Is There But System Is Unusable

Apr 13, 2011

I have Kubuntu 10.10 64-bit, which was running fine until I did a bunch of apt-get software installs to permit me to compile YaWP weather plasmoid. In the process I am now at KDE 4.6.2, and my system is now non-functional, not able to start KDE desktop.

When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.

I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.

Fedora :: Desktop Wallpaper And Icons Become Strecthed Unusable

Dec 10, 2010

I already posted on the compiz community forums but I figure more eyes are better than less. I hope the "software" forum is the right place to post, I don't believe I'm having any hardware issues.What I'm seeing is strange desktop corruption/stretching when compiz starts, almost as if compiz thinks my desktop is about four time wider (horizontal) than it really is and this makes nautilus go a bit crazy. All other compiz functionality seems fine. Before compiz starts (with metacity or openbox), the desktop (nautilus) appears normal. I've tried both settings for show_desktop in gconf and they both result in the same (bad) effect. If I use a gradient as my background instead of an image, I see that the gradient is also wrong in the same way (wider than it should be).

Attached are two screen shots: streched-small.jpeg is my desktop with compiz and normal-small.jpeg is the same desktop after running "metacity --replace".I have a dual head setup with an ATI X18000 running two identical monitors, both at 1280x1024. This problem does NOT happen if I disable one of the display or clone them nor does it happen if I place one monitor on top of the other. The problem only occurs in dual head mode and only if the monitors are logically positioned side by side, horizontally.I don't think it factors in but it's worth mentioning I'm doing this with an LTSP 5 thin client configuration. My thin client just happens to be a PC with an X1800 at the moment.

Ubuntu :: System Becomes Almost Unusable During Disk Writes?

Apr 12, 2010

I'm using 9.10 Desktop 64bit on a Dell Latitude D830. I have 4 gigs of RAM and a 7200 rpm sata hard drive. Everything works pretty well, video, sound, and network. Flash isn't as smooth as in Windows but I assume that's a Flash/64bit thing and not necessarily an Ubuntu thing.

However, one area of performance still lags far behind my Windows XP experience, and that's disk writes. For instance, when I'm copying a large amount of information from a USB drive or from my Windows partition to my native partition, I can barely switch windows until the task is complete, nevermind trying to surf the Web. I thought that that might be related to the slow performance of the ntfs driver, but recently I have been doing a lot of work with VMWare, and I get the same result when trying to pause virtual machines - it writes a largish amount of information to disk in a short amount of time and I can't do much until it finishes.

Here are some things I looked at based on other threads to try to debug my issue:

~$ sudo hdparm /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
multcount = 8 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)

[Code].....

That disk read speed is a little faster than average - several more tests showed it hovering around the 66 MB/sec range. Of the other info, I see that UDMA is on which I understand is good, but if there is something else there that I should fix I don't see it.

I know that my computer can handle these tasks (at least the vmware stuff) without such a significant interface slowdown because in XP I did it with less RAM than I have now. Is this just the way that the linux kernel scheduler fails to account for UI needs?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4->10.10 Renders System Unusable?

Sep 29, 2010

After doing the standard sequence to go from 10.4 to 10.10 beta, the system is now unusable.There are no icons and no thees. The GDM login shows a big question mark where a graphics would normally be.When I log into the session, I get nothing: no desktop, no panels. Alt+F2 does nothing, so I can't even launch a terminal that way.After starting a terminal from a virtual console, I can start looking at what's wrong. Metacity crashes right awaywith:metacity:ERROR:ui/ui.c:752:meta_ui_get_default_window_icon: assertion failed: (default_icon)Aborted (core dumped)

Fedora :: 13 Graphics - Screen Became Unusable When Enabled Desktop Effects

May 30, 2010

I attempted to install the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package and my screen became unusable when I enabled desktop effects. I then uninstalled mesa-dri-drivers-experimental and tried to install the akmod before realizing that my card isn't supported yet. Now I can't seem to do anyting to get my screen back. I removed the blacklist on nouveau, but my screen still goes black after fedora boots. Is there any way I can just get things back to default without reinstalling the whole system?

Ubuntu Servers :: USB Drive Not Working - Renders System Unusable

Jul 26, 2011

I formatted a 1.5 Tb western digital external usb drive to ext4 for media streaming on ubuntu-server. I tried FAT32/NTFS before but it keeps unmounting itself for no reason. I tried everything I could find on Google but no luck. After formatting it to ext4, it worked OK for a while but for some reason it has stopped working. Running mount -a makes system unusable indefinitely. It works only if I restart it.
UUID=db261dd6-2edf-4020-a0f5-17613a6e94ea /media/wd ext4 defaults 0 0
Is ext4 not a compatible format for external drive? Since, I have I tried different formats and Ubuntu keeps unmounting them. Should I try a different distro?

I have a problem after running zypper up. Apparantly somehow it upgraded to current factory release.. Problems so farNo networkNo x - session(after a quick hack i have x started but no input devices work)I think there is something wrong with udev and my xorg.confx first complained about InputDevice not being recognised.. I moved away my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and got a quick running session (without input devices, so icannot log on) but after a reboot it gives me a "black" screenWhile troubleshooting is encountered the problem that my network card is not recognised.. This all points in the direction of udev or whatever to be badly configured during upgrade..

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Is At 100% And Completely Unusable Rendering Gnome Unusable

Nov 19, 2010

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.

When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).

I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Broken Since Upgrade?

May 2, 2011

Curious thing happening since upgrade. The desktop toolbar is invisible, although I can get click and access the drop down menus for login, calander, power settings etc. Alt-tab works in 2D. The new desktop icons for natty are also invisible. I have tied to access a terminal using Alt-F2, but terminal window doesnt open. I had compiz running on previous 10.10 installation. I am at a loss as to where to begin fixing this. If I didn't have a windows 7 installation partition that would get screwed up I would flatten the installation and download and install a fresh install, but I do and I don't want to go through that pain if I don't have to.

Running Lenovo 3000 C200 with intel gm1345 gfx.

General :: Mark A Portion Of The Screen As Unusable

Dec 12, 2010

I have a laptop of which a large part of the screen is broken (shows garbage). Fortunately the broken area is a clean rectangle, the bottom 1/3 of the screen or so.

The laptop is running Ubuntu 8.04, but I plan to reinstall it with 10.10. The graphics are provided by an Intel 915GM or something in that direction.

Knowing this, do you know of a way to tell the system about the broken part of the screen, so it will simply not use it? I don't really care whether it's done at the hardware, X or window manager level, though as low as possible is preferred.

Ubuntu :: Broken Desktop With 3 Errors After Update

Jun 5, 2010

I'm running UNR 10.04 on a Samsung NC10.Every thing has been working great for the last few weeks since I downloaded and installed - almost everything worked great out of the box! Only 'problem' I was having was pants flash performance but that's a bit of a given I guess.However, this afternoon I did an update + upgrade, then did the required restart.Booted fine to login screen, but it then took a looong time for any thing to happen - before any panels/UNR interface appear, I get 3 errors, one after another.They are:

1. Could not update ICEauthority file /home/matt/.ICEauthority
2. Problem with configuration server /usr/lib/libgconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256
3. Nautilus could not create the following required folders /home/matt/Desktop, /home/matt/.nautilus

(I think the third one asked me to create the folders myself and then give it correct permission but not certain)I tried loging into standard Gnome desktop, same errors, same problem. Same with the gnome safe thing.After a while however, I do get one panel, in the top left corner - rather than stretching full width, it's about 2 inches across. On it are some buttons (mail, sound, chat, power, time) but not some that should be (guake, wireless etc)I brought up the run dialogue (Alt + F2) and tried a variety of programs but nothing happened with any (tried firefox, chromium, xchat, terminal)

Ubuntu :: KDE Desktop Broken, Completely Frozen?

Feb 9, 2011

I have KXstudio 64 installed, was changing the clock font and doing little, normal tweaks to the panel, pulled the edge in a little, and it just froze right there, and now the whole desktop is broken, unresponsive. Nothing works. I have yaquake terminal installed so i can access a terminal by hitting F12, and open applications that way, but no menu's, links, widgets, panel icons or anything are working at all, after rebooting, logging in as other user, nothing helps. I tried a apt-get install kdm or something like that, it didnt help tho.If the easiest thing to do is ditch the stupid buggy KDE desktop and switch to GNOME- then i'd prefer that.even while using the terminal, or applications opened thru it, it freezes periodically and i sit for a few minutes and it comes back. still no desktop tho.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Pandora Desktop App Shows Broken In Synaptic?

Oct 11, 2010

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.

Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Broken System?

Jun 19, 2010

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.

In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

Code:
undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.
