But, first of all: when i try to restore the system in a new PC, could be incompatibilities because the hardware of the broken laptop and the new laptop is different?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.
Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:
#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.
#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !
I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.
Why would modules not load automatically ?
What I am concerned about is if my files would still be accessible after a clean reformat and reinstall of Ubuntu on my system. Would Ubuntu(Karmic) recognise this fresh install as a new system and open a new account on Ubuntu One, rendering my previous files as lost?

While poking around, I noticed that the Kontact KAddressBook had no entries;Instead, I had display with three columns;Column #1, "Address Books" had the cryptic entry 'std.vcf' Clicking on it did nothing. Apparently, all my addresses were gone. Solution: Finding and Reloading the Addresses My addresses were in the vCard format, located in

After checking to see that my backup file of std.vcf was the same size as the system file, I did the following, modified from instructions provided by Joao G. Our company had a vendor doing some data transformation work for us that we recently decided to take in house. They were good enough to transfer all their processes to a pc we gave them and it's running great. Only thing is that its a linux OS and I have no idea how to do anything other than what to click on to run programs.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!
But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).
Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?
Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.
I installed Ubuntu, with a dual boot functionality and worked great. I was recommended Backtrack 4 and I installed it in the system. Now, I try to use the dual boot with Backtrack, Ubuntu and Windows 7 and only Backtrack works. I tried the restore disks that I created when I got the laptop, but the problem persists. s there a way to delete this Backtrack from the system and go back to Windows 7?

What I would like to do is restore the image to VMWare machine for personal purpose (I cannot perform tests on production machine). But after restoring on VMWare I got "Kernel Panic". That's normal due to different hardware.
Now, is there a way to remove the Kernel Panic and correctly boot the machine? I ask our tech department for the RedHat CD1 to enter the "linux rescue" enviromnent, then try to re-read the hardware list with

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was having trouble creating a USB Startup Disk in Ubuntu and used the command:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M count=1
This was a mistake as my USB flash drive was on /dev/sdc. If I am understanding this correctly, the command above deleted the MBR and the partition table. This disk had a single "/storage" partition on it. I googled a solution and found that the "testdisk" program seems to be the most popular solution for things like this. I ran it, selected an "Intel/PC partition" type, set the partition to a non-bootable primary Linux partition, wrote it, and rebooted.
Whenever I run:
sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /storage
I get:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
Dmesg shows the following:

I've decided to give openbox a try with Debian testing. I set up my right-click menu exactly how I want it, and everything else is set up perfectly. I installed trayer and tint2, along with nitrogen. I added the following lines to my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file, but things aren't loading/restoring as they should. Tint2 and trayer don't load at all, and nitrogen isn't restoring my wallpaper. All I get is a black screen with my cursor, but the ability to right-click and open the menu, so it's not like X is dead. I did set the default wallpaper by issuing the command nitrogen /home/john/Pictures/Wallpapers, where "Wallpapers" contains all of my background images.

I'm trying to restore an image from a 40gb partition(6gb used) to a 100gb partition. I set everything up in gparted and and restored the partition image with clonezilla. In gparted, the partition shows the full 100gb partition with 6gb used, however when I boot windows and open the properties on the C: partition, it shows that it's only 40gb. Is there some setting to restore the partition image and use the full 100gb?

Not so good ill admit.With linux, ive spent several hours setting up wireless, sound and games. i dont want to loose all that time if something happens. being new to linux i dont see a back up feature or a way to save the current configuration i have. id hate as a new user to make a stupid mistake and blow the system and loose all my hard work any suggestions? id like to back up the system as it is so i can restore /copy back this set up if possible. whats the tool to use? does it exist in linux?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI start up my laptop, and it works great for about an hour but then it starts to make a loud scratching sound and I know that sound is my HD and after I have to shut it down (by holding the power button), it takes a few tries to get it to boot normally. So I'm pretty sure my HD is the problem, so my question is how can I back up my system (I'm running Ubuntu 10.4)? Just in case something really bad happens. I remember there was a thread sometime ago and a guy there said something about a program that would create a iso of the whole system, and it would back up everything even programs and stuff.
