General :: Restoring The Owners On Debian System Files?

Due to my inattention, tiredness (and probably stupidity) i've run "chown -R someuser:someuser /" and now all your base are belongs to us the files on the server belong to one user (lol).After system restart, apache, bind9, mysql, and adozen other applications don't start and fill their log files with permission errors.I haven't done any backups on system files, only on the db and website files.Please suggest some ways to revive my web server. I'd like to create a tar file on my machine to distribute software to other machines which are all alike (including, usernames, groupnames, etc). I need to create certain files and directories with specific owners on the target machine. In order to do that, I use

tar --create --owner=someone --group=somegroup --file package.tar files. However, for this to work, someone must be in my /etc/passwd and somegroup must be in my /etc/group. Is there a way to fake this so I don't have to create a bunch of users only for that purpose?

im trying to clone my ubuntu system installed in a laptop in case the laptop crashes.
But, first of all: when i try to restore the system in a new PC, could be incompatibilities because the hardware of the broken laptop and the new laptop is different?
I dont mind if i have to buy another laptop with the same processor type (i386, etc), but, for example, the type of the RAM could be cause of problems?

Every time I update certain packages with rpm/yum, they reset certain permissions on their files / directories which I have intentionally changed for various reasons. Is there a way I can override the permissions that the packagers have specified in the RPMs, and force it to keep the permissions/owner/group that I've set?On a Debian system, I would just use "dpkg-statoverride". I can't find any equivalent for RPM systems (CentOS 4 & 5 in my case).

I save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.
Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:
#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.
#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !
I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.
Why would modules not load automatically ?

What I am concerned about is if my files would still be accessible after a clean reformat and reinstall of Ubuntu on my system. Would Ubuntu(Karmic) recognise this fresh install as a new system and open a new account on Ubuntu One, rendering my previous files as lost?

I have recently been helping my brother set up his computer with a fresh install of Fedora 11. Unfortunately things have not been going all that well. After having some problems with Fedora 11, such as it not liking his monitor and disabling Plymouth's graphical boot (I actually like to see what my systems doing!) things finally seemed to be going into place. Unfortunately the next day we were no longer able to log into his account. After hours of tweaking I finally found out it was that for some reason GNOME stopped liking his account.
This is where things went from bad to worse. I tired removing his own account and giving him a new one, unwittingly taking out his home directory in the process, all 80 gigabytes of it. And just as promised ext4 was extremely quick about it. What can I do to recover it? We have done similar things on NTFS on Windows XP, so I see no reason why a next-gen file-system like ext4 can't do it.

In an attempt to restore my ubuntu 9.04 desktop to its original settings, I entered the following in Terminal: rm - rf .gconf. gconfd .gnome .gnome2 .terminacity
and then reset.
The new desktop is cleaner, but now Evolution Setup Assistant wants me to reinstall. I don't think I have an archive file, so should I use the Assistant to install? Will I lose my mail, calendar and tasks if I do?
What if I just install version 9.1? Will it install using my old evolution files?

I'm using Ubuntu One for both access to my files from various computers, but also as a lazy way of backing up my files.
I can't get my head round what happens if I delete a file off my computer, or if I had to wipe my computer and do a fresh install - will UO just restore the files off the cloud server or will it think I've purposefully deleted them and wipe the copies saved to the cloud?

After doing a complete backup, I ran the update overnight. Ubuntu 10.04 was on my computer the next morning. While poking around, I noticed that the Kontact KAddressBook had no entries;Instead, I had display with three columns;Column #1, "Address Books" had the cryptic entry 'std.vcf' Clicking on it did nothing. Apparently, all my addresses were gone. Solution: Finding and Reloading the Addresses My addresses were in the vCard format, located in
/home/MYUSERNAME/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
After checking to see that my backup file of std.vcf was the same size as the system file, I did the following, modified from instructions provided by Joao G. Peixoto joaogpeixoto Within the Kontact KAddressBook, I deleted the empty std.vcf addressbook; Edit Delete Address Book Then I generated a new address book to hold my addresses;

short-sum up: with rsync, 2-weekly, manual on an external disk.

all my test restores in vbox worked fine. i may use the backup as a second OS, so it works. but there i first deleted the old OS and than ran cp -a /media/backup_partition /media/restore_parititon.
yesterday i ran into trouble and had to restore my system.
mount /dev/sda1 /media/restore
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/backup
rsync -auv /media/backup/ /media/restore
that did work, but not so good. dpkg-errors, all non-repo-apps, like opera and some old thrash, were a mess. i had to reinstall them with dpkg to delete them. besides that the system is up and running, but it was a lot of work.

I created two debian bootable pendrive with the newest and basic commands: CP debian.iso and SYNC. When I tried to restoring the pendrive GPARTED sees only few space and is unable to perform any operation on the hidden partition as well in Windows 7.
CFDISK is able to see the partitions but is unable to write anything, just deleting. After deleted any partion GPARTED enconters a wrong block size so is unable to perform any changes.
Thus the only way I found to restoring the pendrive is delete the partion with CFDISK and then formatting the pendrive in Windows, where did I do wrong?

I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it). (has worked in ubuntu 10.10)I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each block of suspend suspend a block of resume suspend, but hibernate hibernate is not followed by resume hibernate ( I assume that is what is expected.)

I may have posted this in the wrong section before. I had it in General Questions and wasn't getting any feedback there, so I'll try here. Okay, onto the problem...I've decided to give openbox a try with Debian testing. I set up my right-click menu exactly how I want it, and everything else is set up perfectly.I installed trayer and tint2, along with nitrogen. I added the following lines to my ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file, but things aren't loading/restoring as they should. Tint2 and trayer don't load at all, and nitrogen isn't restoring my wallpaper. All I get is a black screen with my cursor, but the ability to right-click and open the menu, so it's not like X is dead. I did set the default wallpaper by issuing the command nitrogen /home/john/Pictures/Wallpapers, where "Wallpapers" contains all of my background images.

I used Kubuntu with KDE 4.5.1 up to August, when I switched to Debian Squeeze with KDE (currently frozen at 4.4.5). Before migrating, I used rsync (luckbackup) to backup the whole Home directory. Kontact version used on Debian is now 4.4.6. While I could use the import feature successfully to retrieve all my e-mail messages by pointing it to ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/, I couldn't find a way to do the same with contacts.
I don't have backups of my old ~/.local/share/contacts, the folder simply doesn't exist. However, I have ~/.local/share/akonadi. I never used Akonadi Tray Icon to create a backup. In KAddressBook, I have Personal Contacts, which is empty. While waiting for a solution, I filled Default Address Book with some contacts' e-mail addresses retrieved manually from archived past e-mails.
In ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc I have the following:
1) a folder named lock, containing a text file named _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcf4g7TNh8g and another called _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcfXASyTlNE. If opened, they show 1372 kontact, and 1629 korgac respectively.
2) A file named std.vcf of 0B size.
3) 8 files, numbered progressively, named "std.vcf__ std.vcf__7, all of which are also of 0B size.
I tried renaming the old /kabc to /kabc.old (in case it got modified in the process) and used a copy of it as a target for Default Address Book in KDE Resources, whose path was changed to point to it. Nothing changed, when I reopened KaddressBook there were still only the new contacts I manually created.
Akonadi Configuration shows Personal Contacts, and it correctly points to ~/.local/share/contacts/, but if the folder isn't there I'm not sure what it's pointing to. I also have a Default Address Book, and when I click on Modify, instead of showing a path like Personal Contacts did, it shows a blank field. When I click on Open File Dialog, it expects me to point it to a vCard Address Book File.
If I'm back to KAddressBook, and open the Personal Contacts addressbook to import the the only vCard I am aware of (the 0B sized std.vcf file in /kabc) nothing happens, it remains empty.

I cut paste sys folder, tmp folder, and many more folder to a backup storage place , after that folder icon and other icon converted into txt icon , i can make any folder but can't access, can't open storage, thrash disappear, terminal icon disappear, and also the application and places and system icons, after that someone suggested restarting may help but i can't restart it , so i unplugged the power wire and replugged it and restarted the system but it can't open , all things comes fail, and show INIT: "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes. after each 5 mins this msg is repeating

I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu, and have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers to the latest ones from the website (not sure if that's part of the problem). I've got XBMC installed and it seems to be working, but I can't for the life of me get anything but Stereo passed over HDMI, according to my Onkyo 606 amp that is anyway.Can anyone tell me if it's actually possible, or if they've actually managed it, to get surround sound playing over HDMI on an ACER Revo running Karmic?

I have tried chown and pcman in root mode but I can not change the owner or group of the directories and files on this drive. I think my inability to open both firefox and thunderbird are connected to this problem. Both profiles are on the rade drive. There are no .parentlock files in the profiles and yet the report is that both programs are in use, even after restarting the computer. I have had to install cromium to go online in lieu of FF:

Don't ask me why, but I need to back up a website with complete structure to a windows machine (so no tar/gzip - just an identical copy). I'm experienced with rsync, so I thought to do it that way. However, in the process I'm bound to lose my ownership/permission settings for each file and that will give problems when placing back certain files. Is there a way to either:
1. save those settings on a windows machine?
2. have an easy way to save the filetree with relevant information and a shell script to attach the info back when uploading files again?

My computer initially had one hard drive, with Debian Lenny 5.0.4 installed. I haven't done any special configuration, so upon boot, I was presented with the GRUB kernel select menu, then gdm, etc. I think I used the Debian installer's 'use entire drive with LVM' configuration.
I then added a second hard drive, with the intention of installing Windows XP on it. After I installed XP on this second drive, I found out that it had overwritten the MBR on the first drive. (It was my intention do use the BIOS' F8-key boot menu to choose between the two drives, each with their own distinct boot loader. The two drives and OS's would be completely independent.)
Using my Debian installer CD, I think I have GRUB installed on the first drive again. I've found a number of tutorials which say I can use 'set' and 'linux' to boot the system, but the linux command always returns a file not found error.
I think my LVM filesystem is still intact, as the Debian installer's fdisk reports it, it can also chroot to it and my installation appears to be intact. 'ls' within GRUB shows (derek-swap_1) (derek-root) (hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2) (hd1) (hd1,1) (fd0) . 'derek' was the hostname I used.
I would like to simply restore the system to the way it was before: with the standard GRUB that comes with Debian 5.0.4, which then boots into the debian with my LVM filesystem. Is there a way to do this from the Debian installer CD? (I was hoping there would be a 'dummy install' command which would install GRUB and configure it properly, but leave all my existing partitions and filesystems intact.)

I have recently installed Debian alongside Vista on the same boot menu using the GRUB booting device. Only problem is, I couldn't boot Vista at all any more, so I removed my Debian installation from that drive. But the GRUB boot record persists, I don't have the Recovery disk to restore my old system, so I have to find a way to manually remove the GRUB track and put the old record in its place. I assume there was a copy made of it by the installation program, now my only problem is to find that file and copy the content back in place (at the address at the very beginning of the drive) all that by using Linux code, since that is all I have left. Being new to this game, I have no idea how to begin writing the right command for a job like this

After restoring my panel using these commands:

my files on the desktop, in my home directory went missing. Also looking at my harddrive it seems like it has completely wiped out my content.I had some important files on my desktop and I am wondering if there is any way to get them back? It doesn't reasonable that all my files were deleted during a panel restore, maybe they are hiding under a rock somewhere . the system I am running it on is: Ubuntu 10.04

I have a linux server with debian system. I want to put in my debian server a site. I installed apache php mysql and phpmyadmim. I really thought that was more difficult for me to put my site database. But now i can load on server my database with phpmyadmin after a very simply installation. I could not believe. I'm studying how make ftp work (apt-get site-ftp?) and waiting from my host directadmin installed. But i try to manage linux console and was very exciting for a newbiest like me!
Now I can write text on my site server with echo etc,etc, I have a database, but I have not site files. While I was studying tutorial to make apache work, I frequently read the directory /var/www and my debian console confirm that is an existing directory. How can use this directory?
Any listing debian linux server commands to:
copy, delete, paste from my pc desktop a file TO folder /var/www ?
It is possible without ftp? Another question. Which bad errors can make a newbie like me configuring apache with linux? I ask this because I read all where that I could not manage a server system if I'm not a sysadmin, but I have only to put in a site... what the real risk?

I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

I tried to mex two C files under matlab but faild. The system warned stdc++ cannot be found. I need the mexa64 files urgently. if someone can mex the C files using his/her machine. My server runs Debian GNU/Linux and the Matlab version is 64-bit R2010b. So the extension for the generated file would be mexa64. I'm using hotmail with the same user name as in here.
