Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Broken System?

Jun 19, 2010

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.

In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

Code:
undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nfs Mount Broken Since Upgrading To 11.04

Apr 5, 2011

I've just upgraded to the 11.04 beta, everything working fine to start with (apart from not being able to find anything in the new interface!), but now, a few days later, the nfs mounts to my NAS are broken. I've had a quick go at manually mounting; for instance, if I try to mount 192.168.1.1/Public to /home/Public (where it usually is) it says that the mount point doesn't exist. It's not true, I can see it, and if I test it by trying a mkdir it confirms it. This is a pretty big deal, I've got ALL my stuff on the NAS. I can still see it from my phone and the web interface of the NAS, so I know it's there...Should I just re-install 10.10 and be patient until the final release comes out?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.X To 10.2 Crashed - Alloc Magic Is Broken

I was upgrading from 9.X (can't remember what X is) to I believe it was 10.2 (ok, this happened over a month ago and I just haven't had the time to run after it), and lost power. Obviously doesn't sound good, right? Now when I boot I get the message "alloc magic is broken at 0xaff2c150". I have no idea if this error message is indicative of the whole problem, or what, but I can't get back to my system. I would really rather not lose my work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 8.04 To 10.4 LTS - System Stuck

Apr 7, 2011

I got a really bad virus on my main computer and decided I should just install Ubuntu like I previously had installed on a laptop. Anyway, I used an old 7.10 install disk that I usually use and I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.4 LTS (that went off without a hitch), but when I upgraded from 8.4 LTS to 10.4LTS the install hung up at one point. The system was stuck 7 minutes from completion trying to set up the rsyslog. I left the dialog box up for 3 hours to no avail. I proceeded to reformat the drive to try again and it ended the same way. I currently have the system with the install dialog up and stopped at the setting up of the rsyslog.
Here is a picture of the install window:

Ubuntu Installation :: Broken System - Busybox ?

Aug 18, 2011

I've got Ubuntu 11.04 on a 40G hard disk in dual boot with a Windows XP on a 300G hard disk.

I've got back data with an USB key from a broken Windows Seven, then I've shutdown my ubuntu, but it has difficulties to stop (a mp3 player, which doesn't work well, has already damaged my Ubuntu previously). Then my Ubuntu doesn't manage to boot : it launches "Busy Box" with "initramf". When I boot in recovery mode it fails to boot something at 5s then it tries to launch something constantly.

I've launched a live CD in order to recover my data, but when I try to mount my hard disk I get :

Code:

I've found this link about this problem : [url], but it's too complicated for me.

I just want to recover my data, a system reinstallation wouldn't bother me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.10 To 10.04 - System No Longer Boots

Feb 10, 2010

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error)
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)

If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. If you wish, you may investigate this from a shell in the installer environment.) I ran the recommended reporting script and got the following output:-

Code:

Jan 22, 2010

I am wondering, what are the merits of staying with an LTS release versus the renewal of the system by upgrading to a new release? Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgrading 10.04 To 10.10 System Doesn't Boot (only Blinking Cursor)

Feb 1, 2011

I tried to upgrade to Maverick (server version) usingsudo do-release-upgradeAll went well, but on the first reboot after the installation the PC hangs with grub prompt:error: the symbol grub_xputs not foundI guess it has something to do with my RAID1 setup:sda1/sdb1..RAID1, bootable (system partition, 20 GB)sdc1 ....swap partition sda2/sdb2/sdc2 ... RAID5 (data partition, 3 TB)I made a bootable (using UNetbootin) USB pen drive with 10.10 desktop on it and booted into this desktop version. Aftermdadm --assemble --scanI could successfully access (and mount) my RAID1 and RAID5 drives. However, the system itself does not boot.

after only having mounted /dev/md0 and browsed in the contents, the boot behavior has changed: now the PC does not end up in the grub prompt "the symbol grub_xputs not found", but instead a blank black screen with a blinking cursor left top is shown. Keyboard: no reaction (I tried Enter, Esc, any keys ... no reaction, just a blinking cursor). Then, I tried:

boot into USB pen drive 10.10 desktop
mdadm --assemble --scan ... result: /dev/md0 is available (the RAID1 of sda1 and sdb1)
mount /dev/md0 /mnt/md0

Debian Installation :: Upgrade / System Broken After Moving To 3.16 Kernel

Apr 28, 2015

I got a rather big problem since an attempt to upgrade. My debian version is 8.0.I upgraded when apt proposed the change. I did that in two steps, with apt-get upgrade and then apt-get dist-upgrade, with the installation of a new kernel. I moved from 3.2.0-4-686-pae to 3.16.0-4-686-pae.Since the upgrade, I can't boot my system any longer.During the boot sequence, this message appears with a countdown (it's copied by hand) :

Code: Select all(1 of 4) a start job is running for dev-disk-byX2du

At the end of the countdown, the boot sequence starts again, and ends up on an invite to log in as root in rescue mode. I can't connect (maybe due to some azerty/qwerty issue, I got a French keyboard. I tried to type in "qwerty mode", with no success (the password is not prompted)).I can connect with the 3.2 kernel however, selecting it form the grub interface. I can't log in in rescue mode either, but with this kernel the boot sequence goes on and I can log as a regular user or as root, at the end of the boot sequence. There is no X, but the system seems to work. What could I do to make the system boot properly with the new kernel, or to go back to the 3.2 version ?

Ubuntu :: Xorg.conf Broken - KDE And GNOME Failed - Result Of Upgrading Straight From 10.04?

Oct 29, 2010

I was recently watching an avi file, when suddenly, my tower (the computer) got really, really noisy. That's pretty normal when I'm on my Windows side, but very unusual for Ubuntu Linux. I knew something was in the wind then and there. So I exit my Dragon Player to discover that ! gasp ! KDE is down, replaced with the default wallpaper for GNOME, and no bars anywhere. I reset the system only to find that it refuses to boot into either KDE or GNOME. Having been in something similar to this situation before, I decide that Xorg.conf must be broken somehow. In an effort to get to the GUI where I can safely edit it, I try reinstalling KDE and GNOME, which both failed.

So I try installing xdm...which results in only being able to access the login screen for XFCE. Whenever I try to log in using the correct credentials, it simply refreshes the log-in screen.

1. Is this, indeed, the sign of a broken Xorg.conf, or a broken Xserver in general? Or is there something larger that was changed?

2. How do I fix this? (I've already tried using Ubuntu 10.10 64 in rescue mode, but I can't seem to change anything in the system itself.)

3. Is this possibly a result of upgrading straight from 10.04? Is it possible that having both KDE and GNOME contributed to this?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Half Is In English And Half In Another Language After Upgrading To 10.04

May 27, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:

1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.

2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.

4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".

5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.

6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.

7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Broken After Kernel Update / "System InstallArchive() Error" When Installing?

Jan 30, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.

Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.

I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:
NvidiaDriverSwitching

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.

I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

Code:
Setting up nvidia-current (260.19.06-0ubuntu1) ...
Removing old nvidia-current-260.19.06 DKMS files...
