After shutting down my laptop the hard way because the system was frozen,
I can not boot anymore ,
I get the user name and password screen
but after typing the user name and password I get a black screen and cursor becomes like (X)
please tell me how to fix this or at least how to backup my evolution mails and firefox bookmarks
I am now booting via ubuntu installation disc, " try without installation"
What I am concerned about is if my files would still be accessible after a clean reformat and reinstall of Ubuntu on my system. Would Ubuntu(Karmic) recognise this fresh install as a new system and open a new account on Ubuntu One, rendering my previous files as lost?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.
In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.
so i just installed ubuntu 10.10 from CD. After restart the Update Manager windows poped up and downloaded 21 updates.. but i can't install the updates because "The package system is broken.." [URL]

I JUST got back on my laptop now that I have my new A/C adapter, and guess what? The package management system is broken! Which sucks, because I have quite a bit of updates to install.

I've got Ubuntu 11.04 on a 40G hard disk in dual boot with a Windows XP on a 300G hard disk.
I've got back data with an USB key from a broken Windows Seven, then I've shutdown my ubuntu, but it has difficulties to stop (a mp3 player, which doesn't work well, has already damaged my Ubuntu previously). Then my Ubuntu doesn't manage to boot : it launches "Busy Box" with "initramf". When I boot in recovery mode it fails to boot something at 5s then it tries to launch something constantly.

As the title says, i was in the middle of the upgrade, when the system froze then a black screen with the text similar to: starting apache ..... starting ..... ... in that way, but with more text, i could not remember the exact details. When i boot up, it say /dev not found, and other errors, and a weird black screen that seems to be loading modules appears, but never finishes and starts to act strange. Any way i can get this fixed without just copying my data and reimaging my partition.

I have a GRUB backup pen drive thing, but when I boot from it, it wont accept any keys other than CTRL+ALT+DEL. The partitions can be mounted and are usable, but home is encrypted. I don't want to delete my files.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSince I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick in a new computer (my lab's computer), there are three broken icons in the system tray. They are black rectangles, with white borders, and a forbidden sign in the middle. I can't figure out what program is related to them, and they don't respond to left or right click. Can anyone point me in some direction? I thought about using programs like xprop/xwininfo to figure out what program they are related to and kill it, but these don't work for system tray, only for windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed a new driver from the Realtek site for my wireless chip, and it broke my system. Ubuntu won't boot in normal mode or recovery mode, and I'm sincerely hoping beyond all hope that I can avoid reinstalling the system I just got working yesterday.
At my connection speed, it will take about two days to download all of the packages I use. Is there any way to get rid of this driver and restore my system back to how it was... about twenty minutes before I posted this, without booting in the system?
I had a working ubuntu 10 on my old laptop. Not sure what's happened but now whenever you start any app, the app starts in the foreground, then immediately the desktop gains the focus. This happens all the time on any app that is either already running or started from scratch. Thus making the system unusable.

I got a rather big problem since an attempt to upgrade.My debian version is 8.0.I upgraded when apt proposed the change. I did that in two steps, with apt-get upgrade and then apt-get dist-upgrade, with the installation of a new kernel. I moved from 3.2.0-4-686-pae to 3.16.0-4-686-pae.Since the upgrade, I can't boot my system any longer.During the boot sequence, this message appears with a countdown (it's copied by hand) :

At the end of the countdown, the boot sequence starts again, and ends up on an invite to log in as root in rescue mode. I can't connect (maybe due to some azerty/qwerty issue, I got a French keyboard. I tried to type in "qwerty mode", with no success (the password is not prompted)).I can connect with the 3.2 kernel however, selecting it form the grub interface. I can't log in in rescue mode either, but with this kernel the boot sequence goes on and I can log as a regular user or as root, at the end of the boot sequence. There is no X, but the system seems to work.What could I do to make the system boot properly with the new kernel, or to go back to the 3.2 version ?

I installed Win7 after Ubuntu (10.10). I attempted to reload grub so that I would be able to run them dual boot and now I can't load anything.
I followed the guide here: [url] and went threw it a couple of times now to make sure it wasn't user error.
I am using a live cd from 10.04 because it's the only one I have. Any chance that's why it isn't working properly? I wouldn't think so, but I assume that it's possible.
If that is the case; Any way to solve it without using the live cd? I cannot burn a new disk because I have to boot from disk to use my computer right now.
I just get a flashing cursor on a blank screen when I try to load.
i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.

At some point while trying install/uninstall I got a message that said to check the broken filter to see which file is broken. At present, I cannot install/uninstall programs. I do not know how to access the broken filter. And I cannot run apt-get install -f
I had recently installed the kernel sources so that I could compile the VirtualBox kernel module to use well but I had not restarted afterwards. I had been using my system problem free until tonight when I decided to restart. I had no internet connection and through ifconfig showing only lo and ifup eth0 returning "device eth0 is not accessible", I discovered I had a bigger problem than at first thought. Then I discovered that no PCI devices other than video were working, and so I referred to /var/log/messages and discoverd a line stating that "/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/modules.dep : no such file or directory.

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
I had just finished setting up 10.10, although it was running very slowly which was apparently due to the intel GMA910 graphics drivers. I was just installing virtualbox when system update ran and I saw it was prompting to install a new xorg.intel driver so I went ahead with it.
Now I can't log in - I get the startup sound and I get a couple of keyring password dialogs. After I enter my password all I can see is the desktop background image and a big black X cursor. It doesn't proceed any further past this point.
I am trying to set this machine up for my wife before I have to go away on business so we can keep in touch over skype. What can I do - do I need to reinstall? I hope not as I have spent ages getting her email and music etc. on there.
Should I downgrade to a different version because of the issues with intel graphics? If so, which version of ubuntu is safe to use?
My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
I've updated my thinkpad T41 from Jaunty to Karmic and the notify OSD graphics are broken.
