General :: Restoring A Backup In A Different System?
Jan 21, 2010
im trying to clone my ubuntu system installed in a laptop in case the laptop crashes.
But, first of all: when i try to restore the system in a new PC, could be incompatibilities because the hardware of the broken laptop and the new laptop is different?
I dont mind if i have to buy another laptop with the same processor type (i386, etc), but, for example, the type of the RAM could be cause of problems?
I want to restore a HDD image I have to my laptop's HDD while booted off the Ubuntu Live CD.The laptop's HDD is unformatted and has no partitions.I expected this to work:$ sudo dd if=/path/to/backup.img of=/dev/sdaBut I'm tolddd: opening `/dev/sda': Permission denied.
Several months back I backed up a windows hard drive using an ubuntu live cd and this commanddd if=/dev/hdx | gzip > /path/to/image.gzI now want to restore that image but so far have not been successfulI have tried to restore using this commandsudo dd if=/path/to/file.gz of=/dev/sdb1After some time has passed, the terminal reads23568129+1 records in23568129+1 records out12066882348 bytes (12 GB) copied, 1327.65 s, 9.1 MB/sIf I reboot to windows with the 2nd hard drive connected as a slave. I go to my computer to try and browse the files of the restored HD but when I double click the drive, windows saysthe disk is not formatted.I have also tried sudo dd if=/path/to/file.gz of=/dev/sdbAnd when I do this, the disk does not show up in places/my computer but it will show up in gparted and Disk Management
all my test restores in vbox worked fine. i may use the backup as a second OS, so it works. but there i first deleted the old OS and than ran cp -a /media/backup_partition /media/restore_parititon.
yesterday i ran into trouble and had to restore my system. mount /dev/sda1 /media/restore mount /dev/sdb1 /media/backup rsync -auv /media/backup/ /media/restore
that did work, but not so good. dpkg-errors, all non-repo-apps, like opera and some old thrash, were a mess. i had to reinstall them with dpkg to delete them. besides that the system is up and running, but it was a lot of work.
I'm doing an rsync backup to an external drive in order to take a shot at setting up partition encryption. My rsync command is, as root: Code: rsync -av / /external1/backup.Once I've finished my cryptsetup and done a fresh Linux install, what command should I use to properly restore my backup (without messing up the encryption setup)?
can i do a complete system restore on a toshiba netbook with linux op system, as ive bought one with admin name and password still on it, and i dont know the password to use the admin side of the netbook?
Before I reinstalled Ubuntu (this time allocating the entire disk to it as I never really used Windows any more) I backed up the entire contents of my /home folder using Deja Dup. Now that I am done reinstalling Ubuntu I am trying to restore the backup. However, when it actually begins restoring the backup, it says "Restore failed: failed with an unknown error".
Due to my inattention, tiredness (and probably stupidity) i've run "chown -R someuser:someuser /" and now all your base are belongs to us the files on the server belong to one user (lol). After system restart, apache, bind9, mysql, and adozen other applications don't start and fill their log files with permission errors.I haven't done any backups on system files, only on the db and website files. Please suggest some ways to revive my web server. I have only 2 month experience with linux,
I've been using 11.04 Unity, & quite like it. I fired up Blender 2.49b the other day (not used it for a long time) & its behaviour was very erratic. Due to this I decided to reinstall 10.10 for the time being, until October or maybe even the 12.04 LTS. I backed everything up & reinstalled 10.10. I then tried to restore my Evolution from the Natty backup file, which simply didn't work. The message was something about it not being a valid file. I'm assuming this is a non backwards compatibility issue.
Any way getting Blender to work or restoring Evolution? With regard to Blender (in Natty); I've not tried proprietary drivers for my GPU yet as the open source defaults have always been fine, so that's an option. It means another reinstall (of Natty), but that really isn't such a big deal at this point. With regard to Evolution (in Maverick); I found a ppa but I'm unsure how to proceed once I've added it. Would I do an apt-get update & an apt-get install evolution?
I save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.
Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:
#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.
#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !
I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.
What I am concerned about is if my files would still be accessible after a clean reformat and reinstall of Ubuntu on my system. Would Ubuntu(Karmic) recognise this fresh install as a new system and open a new account on Ubuntu One, rendering my previous files as lost?
Issue: I want to backup my system and be able to restore if/when my system crashes.
Setup: Thinkpad T61 running Sidux KDE3.
I want to back up the system files more than personal data. What I have found is that when I apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade performs without error, but when I restart and login I get a black screen with a mouse. From the 'black screen' I can open yakuake with F12 and then launch applications and such from the command line. The point of this more troubleshooting right now. Later is so I won't need to do a complete reinstall.
What backup prog have you used that will backup the complete system and is easy to restore?
O/S: Fedora 12 I am newbie in linux. What I want to do is: Make backup for my file system, cos I learn how to configure servers. So if I made some thing wrong, I want to be able to restore the default setting for my files. Instated of install new O/S.
After doing a complete backup, I ran the update overnight. Ubuntu 10.04 was on my computer the next morning. While poking around, I noticed that the Kontact KAddressBook had no entries;Instead, I had display with three columns;Column #1, "Address Books" had the cryptic entry 'std.vcf' Clicking on it did nothing. Apparently, all my addresses were gone. Solution: Finding and Reloading the Addresses My addresses were in the vCard format, located in
/home/MYUSERNAME/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf
After checking to see that my backup file of std.vcf was the same size as the system file, I did the following, modified from instructions provided by Joao G. Peixoto joaogpeixoto Within the Kontact KAddressBook, I deleted the empty std.vcf addressbook; Edit Delete Address Book Then I generated a new address book to hold my addresses;
File New Add Address Book KDE Address Book (Traditional)
[code]....
The [next] command took me back to the 3 empty columns. In a minute or two, 'Names' (column 2) began to fill up with my old contact listings
I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.
My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.
My manager at work asked me to setup an FTP server running LINUX. i had a post about some custom scripts and commands that i needed, so after i configured and set everything up, i got another assignment....here we go, i need to come up with a way of backing up the entire system, or creating a script that will setup, install and configure the FTP related features i have made working there.i am wondering what would be the most ideal/best and easy to do way to back up the system? the goal is : in case if HDD fails,r anything goes wrong.system can be restored in no time. this is still up in air thing, i offered taking some time on a weekend and setting up same system on say,ew drive, and swapping them when one goes bad... but what would be an alternatives
I'm trying to create backup/archive my Ubuntu 10.04 system files (so I can restore it in case my system get corrupted). More specifically, I'm trying to zip the important files in my root directory not including my home directory (which includes my documents which I backup separately/more frequently) to an external hard drive attached via USB (called 'My Book').
Since File Roller didn't give me quite the level of control I was looking for, I created a script that I could execute to backup and archive regularly. Here's a snippet: cd /media/"My Book"/"Linux Backups" NOW=$(date +"%b-%d-%y") LOGFILE=Backup_Root_FileSystem-$NOW.log sudo zip -r -T -v Backup_Root_FileSystem-$NOW / -x /media/'My Book'* /media* /proc* /sys* /mnt* /dev* /cdrom* /home* /'lost+found'* | tee -a $LOGFILE
Does the dump command back up entire file-systems or is it capable of backing up subsets of a file-system? And is tar capable of taking device names (for file systems) as input to be archived?
what is the best working software which could backup dual system.Host system is XP pro...and Backtrack on the second one.Is Acronis(xp based) will works?
Image Hard drive Ubuntu Operating system 9.10 Complete back up and restore. Changing over Hard Drives need a complete back up not just save files. So the image can be restored on any hard drive that restores the computer to its original state before it was imaged.
I am trying to restore my system to Ubuntu 10.10, using a system backup made with REMASTERSYS. When I reboot, I get the message: GRUB error:15 I found many threads discussing this issue, most notably here: [URL]
At work we have a linux based ip phone system. Now this system was buggy for a bit but we now have it working perfectly. As it is we clone this hard drive and on backup I clone it back. This works but if for whatever I'm not in the office the backup can't go through because apparently no one can read the VERY simple instructions. What i would like to do is burn a cd with a copy of the hard drive (this configuration will change once every 6-12 months at maximum) as well as a VERY minimal linux install.
The goal is they stick the cd in and reboot. The system loads the super minimal linux then it runs a batch file that clones the portion of the CD that has the hard drive onto the system then it asks the nice moron....err....person...to remove the cd and reboot All I need is a a bootable system to a bash script that will run live from cd. I can make the nice bash script that puts to the screen a nice ascii graphic telling the lucky sap it's running and to come back in a little bit to make sure it's done.
I am trying to create a backup script that will back up a single folder for a class i am in. I was wandering if I could get some help. If possible I would also like to know how to write a script that can encrypt that same file . I will be putting the back up in my /home/usr/Backup directory. I am not trying to back up my whole system just a single folder. I am using Fedora 11
I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
Recently I've backupped my entire /home folder on my laptop with grsynch trough ssh.Since I already had a simply text file containing all installed programs, I figured 'then, when i go from the backup trough my desktop, all my program settings will be restored if i run the txt file to install all those programs first. So i installed al programs, then i went from backup to /home on desktop, logged out and back in. Started up a random program (tried thunderbird and filezilla) and no settings were to be found. In retrospect, docky did start, but didnt have all the launchers i had on my laptop. so that could have been a clue.
I have performed the tar backup in my linuxbox by using the commandtar -cvpzf ring.tar.gz /m01/fordb/sqlThe ring.tar.gz is stored in /m01Now i need to restore the particular directory sql into the /m01/fordb/where i have deleted the sql directory
