Sep 1, 2011I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

May 21, 2010i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?

Oct 20, 2010This is my first linux install, Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and first thing I do is update. I can't update because I get this message "The package System is broken Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f"
This a brand new fresh install, how can there be problems already!?
In terminal I've tried " apt-get install -f" and get "E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

Apr 25, 2011I Keep getting a dialogue window prompting me to repair it, it returns the error " E:I wasn't able to locate file for the ultimate-edition-nautilus-scripts package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.: ", after looking around the forums & trying many of the techniques including creating an empty file & running aptitude -f install as well as a few more commands mentioned in various threads, all to no avail, I am stuck with the same message.
Is there any way to totally uninstall & reinstall apt getting rid of any changes that would be causing this or is there a simpler fix I have just overlooked ?.

At some point while trying install/uninstall I got a message that said to check the broken filter to see which file is broken. At present, I cannot install/uninstall programs. I do not know how to access the broken filter. And I cannot run apt-get install -f

Mar 4, 2010About a week ago, I installed all the updates that popped up. I didn't actually look at what was being installed.
Since then, most of the items in the Yast2 Control centre won't run and just pop up an error box with the following (Firewall):

Feb 13, 2011So apparently I've got a broken dependency and Ubuntu can't handle it itself. This is the error message I get when it fails to repair.

E: Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/am-monkeyd-nautilus-elementary-ppa-natty.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I admit fooling around with trying to install nautilus elementary, not really knowing what I was doing, and now things are all messed up.

Feb 21, 2011This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:
Failed to lock the package manager
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?

So, I tried to uninstall it.
I messed up at some point. Now, most apt operations result in errors.

Is there any way to fix this, or is my package managment permanently broken?
I just want to get to the point where apt isn't returning errors, because at some point I will want to upgrade to 10.04. This is just too risky with broken apt.
