I have been having problems with Samba sharing from my Ubuntu-Server to all of my Windows 7 machines. All of the machines are able to access the samba shares however when i try to write to these shares i get a "Access Denied" error. This only happens under windows 7, my Ubuntu laptop easily writes to these shares. PS My permissions are read/write to all

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have set up RHEL 5 file server with Winbind and samba services running.I am able to assign and authenticate windows XP users against my RHEL 5 server.No issues.But one or two of my users are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition and they are not able to access my network samba shares.I can view the shares in windows 7 box but trying to access gives me "network access denied error".But i can access the same share in Windows xp machine for the above tested users.Working great but not in windows 7 box.I haven't tested with Vista OS yet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some time now, I have been backing up a windows box (data files only) to a ubuntu machine using the following:
mount -t cifs -o user=xxx,password=xxx //windowsshare/ /mnt/
For the first time I needed to restore some files and found I did not have the correct rights to write to the windows machine.
I had already wasted a whole day trying to map the ubuntu machine from windows and failed so this is not an option.
I have tried adding write rights to several accounts on the windows machine, also tried adding write rights to "everyone", checked both the share permissions, as well as the folder permissions.
I read about chmod, and tried to use the command gksudo to do something but this fails with DISPLAY error. Tried several things to fix this which didn't work and I was just going off on a tangent.
In the end I used a CD ROM to copy the files from one machine to another.
So for next time I need to restore a file, how can I give myself rights to do so?
I installed samba (in Ubuntu 9.10) and I can access shared files in Ubuntu from Windows 7 but when I try to access W7 files from ubuntu: Places>Network, it prompts me Username,Domain, Password. I tried Username = W7 usernameDomain=my workgroup (MSHOME)Password=W7 login passwordbut it prompts me same thing again...checked some other related threads but couldn't get any luck.

I have created both a unix username with password and a samba username with the same password i used for the unix user. When windows prompts me for the username/password i give it the same one i created on the samba server, but it still will not take it. I know samba is running because i can view the shares but cannot access them without getting prompted for username/password. I just have the one user for now while i am testing, but there will be more.

I am using samba t share my files.I am sharing /media/MEDIA folder. it is a ntfs partition mounted with ntfs-3g with write/read access from linux.I can see and browse my shares and also create files in the root of this partition, ie /media/MEDIA, but in its subfolders i do not have write permissions.
another interesting thing is that i have permission to create directory and delete files everywhere and in any folder, subfolder but when trying to create files i get not enough free disk space error.by the way i dont know if this config file is correct, i find as template in internet.

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:

Furthermore, I went ahead and mapped the Samba user to my Linux user account in /etc/samba/smbusers:

When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.

I am dual booting OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows 7 both 64bit on my PC. I've got VMware workstation installed on both. I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a linux domain (FEDORA CORE 1) and two laptop's which are part of my domain with windows xp pro service pack 2.I have given two ip's to both the laptop's being primary as global and secondary as local.I have configured printer in one laptop and shared.Till last week i was accessing that shared printer from my other laptop and every thing was working fine.Last week i formatted one laptop,(which dose not have shared printer) from then onwards i am not able to access my other laptop. I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines.And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

Is there a way to set the permissions on files and folders from a Windows server or workstation? The partition is NTFS and is mounted as NTFS, but whenever I right click on a file or folder on the Ubuntu server from a Windows computer and try to change the permissions I get "Access Is Denied".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have my ubuntu comp setup as a media server and works fine with mythtv etc but I also want to access the files from my computers in the other rooms (most have windows 7). I was able to share the file containing the videos easy enough by right clicking the file and checking all of the sharing options the first time. I have been able to access all the files that i originally put in the folder and stream video to my other computers without issue.
However any new files I add to the folders I am now unable to access. The files show up but when I click on them it says I don't have permission. I have tried unsharing the folder and redoing it but I come to the same issue. I am sure I am just forgetting an easy step but I can't think of what that is. Also want to make sure that any new files I add to this folder will work instantly across the network.
I try to access my ubuntu machine via my Windows Machine (Samba Server on Ubuntu Machine). Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? I have already tried to remove and purge everything Samba related and then tried reinstalling, but that still didn't do anything

I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a shared directory on another machine but I can't get it to mount as a samba share. The permission denied doesn't say where/which permission is denied. Is it on the remote on on the local machine? The remote has sharing enabled for the shareddocs directory and after I have mkdir'ed the local mount point I open it's permissions too. The verbose response from mount.cfis looks like this:
mount.cifs kernel mount options: unc=//192.168.1.102shareddocs,domain=WORKGROUP,ver=1,rw ,username=clive,,,,,,,,,,,ip=192.168.1.102,pass=** ******
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
The man page does not have a list of error codes.
