This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N
This will not show me the windows os this only show me my laptop. What can i change for this to show me the other computer on this network. The port i am wanting is open. I want to be able to mount the share files and move them to my computer i am going to use the commands put and get to move the files when i am able to get to the smb: >

Server :: Unable To Access Samba Share On CentOS 5.4 From Windows XP Or Vista
Jan 23, 2010I can't be the first one with this problem. What am I missing?
I have setup Samba servers in the past, just none under SELinux. The last one I configured was a couple years ago, so I wouldn't doubt I'm a bit rusty.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Samba Share Not Accessible From Windows Machine?
Feb 13, 2010I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

Oct 8, 2010I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop right now. I have an external western digital terabyte drive plugged into it. I am able to see it and view it fine. Let's work with my music folder for example. I want to be able to access this music from my Windows 7 laptop so that I may add it to my itunes. However, when I enter the \servershare from the windows 7 laptop it says that the "server" is found but the "share" seems to be invalid. I've checked this 20 times and setting the share name to "music". I've rebooted 2 times on each computer yet to no avail. If I make a share on the Ubuntu desktop I can access it from the laptop. So it seems like it just gets lost when looking inside the external. This was just working last week, then I had to blow away they win 7 lappy and now it just won't work!

Everytime I want to connect to my Windows 7 pc, it will just prompt me a "password required for xx pc"...and keep looping on every username/password [afaik from the windows account], and I'm unable to login to it.
Even tho I've set "LmCompatibilityLevel" dword key, 1 or 2 [restarted every set] under LSA..it's still the same thing happens...

Jan 22, 2011I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Apr 30, 2010I got my server set up with 10.04, and with everything installed: DHCP, SSH, Samba, VBox, etc.
DHCP, SSH work fine, but I am having problems where I cannot ping the hostname of the machine.
It worked for a few minutes after I got everything installed and now it's not letting me connect via hostname. I can connect fine if I use the IP address. I cannot ping the machine by hostname unless I add it's IP address to the hosts file.

May 25, 2010I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:

When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.

Aug 28, 2010I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

I'm simply trying to access a folder shared on Windows 7. The Windows computers on the network have no trouble accessing it with the username and password -- both XP and Win7 systems are able to access the share.I can try going to Places > Network > Windows Network -- but I get "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server".I can try going to Places > Connect to Server but I get "Cannot display location "smb://192.168.1.8/". Failed to retrieve share list from server." (tried both computer name and local IP)

Fedora Servers :: Unable To Connect To The Share From Windows Machine
Jun 14, 2011Trying to setup Samba for the first time and am unable to connect to the share from my Windows machine. It is a very basic setup, just trying to setup a single share to use a backup location for my windows files.
I've done the following:
1. Fresh install if fedora 15
2. installed samba
rpm -qa | grep samba
gives the following:

3. Used samba server configuration to setup the share and create the samba users
4. When I tried to connect from my windows machine I get the error that the server is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource or I get the error "windows cannot access server, check spelling and try again.
Both computers can ping each other. I opened samba ports in the linux firewall and tried to connect again: same error Disabled firewall all together and have the same error. Here is the output from the testparm command

We are currently opening a new location and need to be able to access the samba shares. We are able to access the mysql databases. The samba shares are used to store various files for the software such as updates, invoices (as pdf files), etc. I've setup vpn connections using windows servers in the past but I can't, for the life of me, get a VPN server setup on our linux server that windows will connect to. I've tried openvpn and pptp. I'd prefer to use the built in windows client to connect.

I've played with the security and valid users options in the smb.conf and I can get it to mount if I remove the valid users option, but this does not provide the access restriction I need. I also left it open and tried making the folder permissions rwx for backupadmin only and that didn't work. I'm using a credentials file which I include below, but I've tried manually entering them in the command too.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Share Cannot Access Symbolic Links To Other Drives?
Jan 10, 2011I've created two samba shares, /media/disk1 and /media/disk2 say the structure is like this:
/media/disk1/dir1
/media/disk1/dir2 links to /media/disk1/dir1
/media/disk2/dir1 links to /media/disk1/dir1
so I can access /media/disk1/dir1 and /media/disk1/dir2 from samba share, but I cannot access /media/disk2/dir1, on Windows 7 it throws:

In conclusion, symbolic inside the same drive is okay, but when cross-drive links happened, I cannot access them..

Sep 1, 2010I've used Samba for several years and when it works it's great. Unfortunately from time to time it seems to get messed up and either all the 7 machines on my home network can't be seen or I can't access the shares on some. I have 2 Windows XP computers 4 Kubuntu and one Linux Mint KDE, all the latest versions. I'd rather not plough through all the documentation for Samba, but would really like a "model" smb.conf with a few comments about parts that might have legitimate variants. I have researched this with Google searches many times but have failed to find the information I need in concise form.
