Ubuntu :: Access Is Denied Setting Folder Security From Windows?

Dec 28, 2010

Is there a way to set the permissions on files and folders from a Windows server or workstation? The partition is NTFS and is mounted as NTFS, but whenever I right click on a file or folder on the Ubuntu server from a Windows computer and try to change the permissions I get "Access Is Denied".

Windows clients experience an issue of being unable to create folders inside the new share I setup. I do not want any share security on this folder since its a global share that our entire office houses client information. They can view the contents but not add it.

My smb.conf has the following settings on the share

log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
passwd chat = *Entersnews*spassword:* %n

Ubuntu :: Sharing - Access The Files From Windows 7 - Permission Denied

May 26, 2011

I have my ubuntu comp setup as a media server and works fine with mythtv etc but I also want to access the files from my computers in the other rooms (most have windows 7). I was able to share the file containing the videos easy enough by right clicking the file and checking all of the sharing options the first time. I have been able to access all the files that i originally put in the folder and stream video to my other computers without issue.

However any new files I add to the folders I am now unable to access. The files show up but when I click on them it says I don't have permission. I have tried unsharing the folder and redoing it but I come to the same issue. I am sure I am just forgetting an easy step but I can't think of what that is. Also want to make sure that any new files I add to this folder will work instantly across the network.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting With Windows Vista - Access Denied

Aug 10, 2010

I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?

Ubuntu :: Resizing The Partition Doesn't Allow Windows Vista To Boot Up - Denied Access

Oct 31, 2010

When I run out of space on my Ubuntu partition, which will probably happen with me being the untidy person I am, is there a way to resize the partition in Windows or Ubuntu that will allow the other to boot? As I've heard stories of using Gparted to resize a Windows partition doesn't allow Windows Vista to boot up as it removes a crucial part of the operating system? I have adequate space to give to Ubuntu on my NTFS partition. May I also add that to install Ubuntu I had to use the partitioner that came with the installer, because the Windows Disk Manager wouldn't let me partition the NTFS drive, because it Denied my Access.

SUSE / Novell :: Access Denied When Printing From Windows Machine To Shared Printer

Nov 25, 2008

I have a OpenSUSE 11 machine set up as a domain controller. I have set my printer up to be shared to Windows machines logging into the domain. I was able to install the printer to my Windows machines. When you go to the printers folder in Windows, it shows the printer but says "access denied" instead of the usual "ready". If I print to the shared printer the job will go through. I am thinking it is an authentication issue because if I log into Windows machine as "root" and let it build a profile, the printer doesn't show the "access denied" message. How do I allow other users to have access to the printer?

Ubuntu Security :: Access Encrypted Home Folder From Recover Mode?

"ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly."

This cannot be correct, because if I log in normally, I get my home folder without any problem.

How can I access my encrypted home folder when I boot via Recover Mode?

Ubuntu Networking :: Folder Access While Setting Up Ubuntu As File Server

Oct 8, 2010

I am fairly new to Linux, dabbled with it over the years but am a experienced windows user so not a complete noob. I am setting up Ubuntu 10.04 as a file server following a tutorial in Linux User and Developer mag which is great but having a bit of a problem getting it to work correctly.I have two folders in the OPT directory and they can only be accessed by using the main username and password for the linux machine when logging on through my Win 7 machine, if I try and access the directory called 'alex' using the Alex username/password I can log into the folder but only have read only access.

I think (but am not sure) it has something to do with setting the ownership permissions of the folders ..

part of the step after creating the directory was

# sudo chown -R root:users /opt/alex

and that didn't seem to work, it wouldn't allow me access as either user so I did

# sudo chown -R root:grae /opt/alex

grae is the main user and so that user has access but the user called alex doesn't .Can anyone advise? I am sure you need more info so please let me know what would help you see what the problem is

Security :: Getting Access Denied When "user Must Change Password At Next Logon" Is Checked?

Mar 1, 2011

I have got a RHEL 5.6 server configured to authenticate via a Windows 2008 domain controller via LDAPS.Everything is working fine, except from the following: When I create a new user in Active directory and check the option "user must change password at next logon", the new user cannot logon and gets an "access denied" message. In /var/log/secure, I find the following:

Mar 1 14:43:21 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=192.168.3.12 user=testuser2
Mar 1 14:43:21 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: pam_ldap: error trying to bind as user "CN=CPSS Testuser 2,OU=IBM,DC=cpss,DC=smarterplatform,DC=com" (Invalid credentials)
Mar 1 14:43:23 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: Failed password for testuser2 from 192.168.3.12 port 4583 ssh2

As soon as I uncheck the "user must change ..." option, the user can log on without problems. Also password change via the passwd command works.

Ubuntu :: Can't Access WINDOWS Folder (10.10 Live DVD)?

Jan 25, 2011

My laptop froze up this morning and required a forceful shutdown and since will not boot. it is a new drive in the machine and have to admit I had not tried my old Ubuntu partition since cloning the drive from my one I RMA'd to Western Digital. So I have downloaded 10.10 Desktop version and burnt to a DVD.

If I try and use Nautilus I can not view anything on the WinXP partition but I can access my NTFS Data drive and my old Ubuntu Studio partitions (which I can't boot although I see Grub options.)

If I go via Terminal I can get at least some access though. What Ubuntu is showing as the name looks suspiciously like a Windows serial number. Is it in fact what I registered my Windows with? Once I get into the Win partition I can view contents of C's root. Here I can view the boot.ini file (which all help on the internet I could find claimed had probably got corrupted) but it looks as it should. I can get into Program File and Documents and Settings so some of the drive seems to work (and I should be able to back up my settings, all Docs and data already live on another partition anyway.) But it will not access the WINDOWS folder. This means I can not try replacing stated missing files from WINDOWS/system32.

Is this because either part of WINDOWS has become corrupt? Or the Address Headers for it? Or is there something that locks off Ubuntu from accessing this that I need to change? Seems strange I get nothing at all listed for the WinXP drive on Nautilus but at least some access with Terminal. Is there a Check Disk type program within Ubuntu that can work on NTFS partitions? Last time I checked (fair few months ago now) there wasn't but here's hoping to progress.

Ubuntu Security :: Windows Virus Appears In Home Folder?

Jan 4, 2011

Lately, I've found 2-3 times an .exe file with a random name in my /home, and another data file with a random name as well. I'm a user of wine, but none of the programs that I use seems to be the cause. Last time it happened I sent it to virustotal.com, and this is the result: [URL].. So, this is clearly a virus. The two files show "nobody" in the proprietary field and "none" as group. What can I do to track down the cause? Also, telepathy-butterfly likes to hog 100% of CPU lately, and all I can do is killing it: is someone exploiting a vulnerability? if so, why the hell would he drop a win32 virus?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 On HPtx2000 - Use Samba To Access A Public Folder Of A Windows Computer?

Jan 20, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my sister's HPtx2000 since she isn't going to use it anymore and it worked better than I expect. The touchscreen works without any additional driver tweaking and installation <3, the wireless works fine, the sound works. I listed those because when i was installing, I was looking around at other people that did this and those were the problems they had (but those was of an old OS).

Well anyways, what I want to ask is about the stuff that doesn't work and the stuff I want to do: The buttons that flip the screen and etc doesn't work. Is there a way to map them and flip the orientation of the screen? And the other buttons too, like the media button. Is there a way to map them to open VLC or something? Does anyone know any tablet programs for Ubuntu? E.g a simple text program that can convert stuff written to neat, typed font? A way to write text into a google search bar using the stylus? And while we're on this, is there a way to map a left click on the touch screen?

In Windows, the left click could be mapped to: a). a side button of the pen, b) the top button of the pen, and c) holding the pen down onto the touchscreen. how to use Samba to access a public folder of a Windows computer? And to access the printer connect to the Windows computer? Some of the tutorials I found were only for folders and printers on the Ubuntu computer.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up 11.3 To Access Printers On Windows Server 2003 Via Samba?

I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

Ubuntu Servers :: Webdav Access - When Connect From Nautilus - Says - Access Was Denied

Mar 26, 2010

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.

I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).

So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.

I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.

When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:

Code:

Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]
