View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading my ubuntu server from 9.04 to 10.04, the window computers couldn't resolve samba shared names anymore, the error code displayed by Windows was 0x80070035.
I was using the ubuntu server as a samba server, using 'share' as the security authentication method, it has been working very well under previous ubuntu versions but, after upgrading to 10.04, the windows computers can't access the server shares anymore; the linux computers don't have any problems (I can access the shares from linux).
As a workaround, I've added the name of the server in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts; but I'd like to know how to fix the problem without modifying every windows computer.
I have been having problems with Samba sharing from my Ubuntu-Server to all of my Windows 7 machines. All of the machines are able to access the samba shares however when i try to write to these shares i get a "Access Denied" error. This only happens under windows 7, my Ubuntu laptop easily writes to these shares. PS My permissions are read/write to all
View 1 Replies View RelatedIve managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI got my server set up with 10.04, and with everything installed: DHCP, SSH, Samba, VBox, etc.
DHCP, SSH work fine, but I am having problems where I cannot ping the hostname of the machine.
It worked for a few minutes after I got everything installed and now it's not letting me connect via hostname. I can connect fine if I use the IP address. I cannot ping the machine by hostname unless I add it's IP address to the hosts file.

when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..
I was wondering if there is some way to determine when a file finishes writing to a directory on both Windows and Linux (obviously, they will probably be two different commands). This is mostly so that, instead of constantly polling a directory for new non-temp files, I can set up a program to simply listen for the completion of a write-to-disk (it seems better to do things that way).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Whenever any of my user access those files using vim, Gedit it works fine and get perfect permissions to read/write those files. but whenever they try to open with any php IDE (quanta plus, geany, eclipse-pdt) they get error while saving those files. I dont think it is a permission or samba issue because we are able to edit/save those files using normal editors..

Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

Using SuSE 11./4 on two machines. Successfully set up a server to share a folder. The client is able to read files from the folder, but not write to them.the client perspective, the shared folder permissions are read and write if owner, read only for all otherHowever, the server shared folder has been set up for sharing, and the permissions are set for read and write to all.
One more thing. When the client goes into the samba share, it sees the workgroup. Clicking into that, it sees the name of the server computer. Clicking into that,it sees two folders: "profiles" and "users". Clicking into "users" goes into the shared folder. I tried setting the permissions from the client side on the "users" folder using root privileges to allow reading and writing without any success

I get this error:"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."I can connect from the command line with smbclinet and write fine. I have tried several different users on both the Mac (cannot write) and Ubuntu clients (can write).Is this something to do with the ._filename files that finder creates? We use both NFS and SMB for file sharing, no special users and so. We are 8-10 users of the machine. We store both large and small files such at thumbnails and disk images.
Now, my problem. I�d like to give more priority for reading files on the server, so a user can look at pictures without problem, and if another user is writing an image file of an disk (10-1000 GB) this writing process should get less priority. The most important is always reading files, to get the job done.
I'm trying to connect to a Samba share on a VirtualBox'ed Windows 7 that is connected to an openSUSE host in bridged mode. For reasons beyond my comprehension I cannot use the shared folders feature, so I'm using Samba instead. I configured a share through openSUSE's Samba server configuration tool:

I also set a password for this user using smbpasswd -a myusername. I can go to smb://192.168.1.6 on the host machine and log in to the share successfully, but on Windows 7 I see this: What am I doing wrong? I can connect to the shares list without any problems. It's just the login that doesn't work.
Update: I noticed that my Samba server is part of the WORKGROUP domain.

I can see the printer in RedHat, but everytime I send a print job, it just does nothing but sit there. I have recently installed Debian on my NAS server. I have also configured Samba for sharing the home directory of a nas user i.e. /home/nas To this directory I have read/write from a windows machine using the nas user credentials.
When I mount my RAID partition /dev/md0p1 to the /home/nas directory, I then realize that all content in this directory (files and subfolders) is only owned by the root user. When trying to access from the windows machine the /home/nas directory, I do not have any write access, only read. I have tried both the nas and the root user credentials.
I have also attempted the change the ownership of the mounted RAID partition to the nas user with the -R recursive option, but I get for the internal files/subfolders an error "operation not supported".
How can I overcome this problem?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0 array definition (i.e. ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=bddf8b69:c97967b5:cb104784:7fef7cc3 )?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0p1 mounting (i.e. mount /dev/md0p1 /home/nas)?
- Should I do any extra configuration before the mounting etc?
