I have similar problems with aircrack-ng suite, but I'll leave that until later!

Sep 30, 2010

Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

Fedora :: Latest Update On F15 Screwed Up Network Manager

Jun 25, 2011

The latest update totally screwed up my system on KDE.The KDE network manager says "activating network", "networking system disabled", "connection failed".The icon shows 3/4 progress completed and is stuck there. Any attempt to change connection manually leads to plasma-desktop crash. I know this is only update related because I have messed with system earlier and thought that the network failure could be my fault, so I reinstalled the system and ran only update command, after the reboot the system was again in the fubar state. This is really frustrating. Just feels like really poor update testing. I have Fedora installed on three different systems however, I won't update them until the problem is fixed.

Ubuntu :: Died After Running Update Manager ?

Apr 7, 2010

Installed from the 9.1 iso got everything set up all tickety boo. using it as a local development server. have been ignoring the update manager, but today for some reason I thought ok, do your thing fatal on restarting it gets as far as the splash screen then dies " * could not access PID file for nmbd" hit esc to get the grub thing up and tried recovery mode same deal so stuck really.

I can hit 'e' and get a basic emacs thing wit a few lines of commands, but not sure what to do there!

I'm not a big terminal user. I can do stuff I need to and leave it at that. Do I have to flatten this machine and re-install anything. Loathe to do that as I spent quite a while getting all the webby bits installed and working as I want to, adn don't really want to have to set all that up again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failure While Running Update Manager?

Mar 26, 2010

While running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.

The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.

Ubuntu :: While Running The Update Manager System Froze

Mar 27, 2010

I'm re-posting here since I've gotten no response in the Installation & Upgrades Forum.

While running the Update Manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. I restarted the Update Manager and still have errors.

The original thread is at: [url]

This is not a crisis. I can re-boot and run without apparent errors. I thought about apt-get -f install but I don't understand enough. Is this a broken dependency problem? If this is a dependency problem will this (apt-get -f install) just clean-up the loose ends and then will the Update Manager pick up the pieces the next time I go through "check"? Is there possible harm doing this?

This system is at 9.10 and was up-to-date until I had this problem yesterday.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Won't Boot After Running Update Manager?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm a little bit stuck and in need of advice from people who know what they're talking about. I've had Ubuntu on my office PC, home PC and laptop for about a year now and never had a problem that I couldn't solve, until now. I'd not turned my laptop (Lenovo N 500 with Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit using GRUB2) on for about a month so when I did on Monday of this week I noticed that I'd not updated Ubuntu for 27 days, so ran the update manager. After everything was updated I carried on using it as normal but when I tried to turn it on yesterday I get the following issue...

GRUB loads and gives me all the possible boot options. Whatever one I choose, I get the same results. It starts to boot (I see the black screen with the white Ubuntu logo) but this remains on the screen for a very long time, then it goes to a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen and it just sits there indefinitely.

I've tried playing with Super GRUB Disc but admittedly I'm not too sure what I'm doing with it. I've tried using the Ubuntu Installation disc as a Live CD too but with no joy. The main HDD appears fine when in Live CD mode, all my files are there etc.. Is this actually a GRUB issue or something else? It's like GRUB's doing its bit and then it's failing slightly further down the line.

I'm totally out of my depth here and really don't want to have to reinstall everything, I'm sure there's a simply solution.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless After Latest Update?

Jan 9, 2010

Creating a new thread for the specific chipset. Laptop is an Acer 5534 with the Atheros chipset. Normally uses the Ath9k driver. To get it to work originally I had to download, compile and install the latest compat_wireless drivers. See post here: {URL] I did the update that came through today and after the reboot there was no wireless internet. It alternates between reboots between having no wireless networks at all detected to never connection to the [AUTO] network previously defined. To fix the problem, I downloaded the latest compat_wireless, compat-wireless-2009-12-11.tar.bz2, and followed the same procedure. I did not do a make clean. To solve the problem temporarily, I edited the grub config and set default to 2 instead of 0 (1 would be 0 in recovery mode).

Fedora Networking :: No Network After Latest F13 Update?

I updated this morning to the latest bugfixes for F13. For some reason, networking has become un-available after the required re-start. I am using a fixed IP. Tried to add eth0 DHCP, which initially worked, but became unavailable after a few minutes as well. I suspect there may be an issue with the card's MAC address which may or may not be detected correctly.. Has Networking been updated somehow in this bugfix release?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wicd Stopped Working On 9.10 After The Latest Update?

Apr 18, 2010

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad s10 which worked flawlessly with wired, I could never get it to so much as search for a wireless network, so I gave up on it long ago.

I'm using UNR 9.10 on it and today, after updating Wicd Network Manager stopped working making it impossible for me to go online with the netbook even when using a wired connection.

I restarted the computer after the update and once UNR booted up wicd wanted root access to use my computer's network cards, I entered my password, this never happened before but whatever, unfortunately after I entered my password wicd didn't show up in the tray and sure enough there was no internet connection whatsoever.

I tried running wicd manually, UNR says opening, but nothing comes up, no tray icon no nothing.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Behind Proxy Not Working In 10.10?

Dec 10, 2010

I was having trouble getting update-manager to work behind a proxy (without authentication). I tried everything I could find in my search, including setting http_proxy environment variable, setting the System->Preferences->Network Proxy and setting the Synaptic package manager proxy settings. Nothing seemed to work.

It turns out that the problem was that the System->Preferences->Network Proxy allows "automatic" proxy (pac file), and I had used that. update-manager doesn't do anything with this setting I guess. I changed from the automatic setting to a host/port manual setting and it began working.

I suspect this qualifies as a bug. update-manager should do something more reasonable than quietly fail if the settings are for automatic - it would be really nice if it worked, and if not then an error message.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Broke Ethernet?

Mar 9, 2011

Writing this from a 9.10 LiveCD, so I know that my hardware is working fine.My system is running 10.10 normally. Last night, the update manager popped up, as it frequently does, and said I had some packages that could be updated. So I let it update after which it said I needed to reboot. So I did, and now it doesn't recognize my network connection, and even the blinky lights on the port itself stay dark. don't know a lot about networking or stuff under the hood, but I can work a console and/or text editor if someone can tell me where to look and what to type.My hardware is (from "lspci | grep -i eth"):02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.
