I used Ubuntu for the first time yesterday (V.9.04) and imediatly upgrade it to V.9.10. After, the DSL conection failed to conect. After reading many threads here I was able to connect by opening a terminal:

sudo pon dsl-provider

It seems ther's a bug with network-manager, but I'd like to use it again as it easier and NB user-friendly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Took Out Network-Manager Icon

May 27, 2011

Using Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-31)on a Dell studio today.Update manager offered four updates, one about networking. I accepted. After restart the Network-Manager icon had vanished from the tool bar and was replaced by a second loudspeaker control icon. No ability to link to the internet. Starting Network-Manager from the pull-down menus did not help.Muggins Noob thought, un/re-install Network Manager. Duh! Uninstall is fine, but re-installing from the web without Network-Manager, tricky. Sadly no ethernet wire available, either wifi or GSM/3G.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Does Not Access Network?

Dec 15, 2010

I upgraded my desktop from 9.10 to 10.04. The updated system works without problem - except that apt-get/Update Manager/Synamptic does not connect to the net anymore.

When I try to check for updates with the update manager, I get the message below. I have set different servers with the same result, and checked if there is a proxy set up somewhere, which is not. I also tried apt-get with the fix flag.

When I access the uri's with a browser, that works without a problem.

Message from update manager:

Fedora :: Latest Update On F15 Screwed Up Network Manager

Jun 25, 2011

The latest update totally screwed up my system on KDE.The KDE network manager says "activating network", "networking system disabled", "connection failed".The icon shows 3/4 progress completed and is stuck there. Any attempt to change connection manually leads to plasma-desktop crash. I know this is only update related because I have messed with system earlier and thought that the network failure could be my fault, so I reinstalled the system and ran only update command, after the reboot the system was again in the fubar state. This is really frustrating. Just feels like really poor update testing. I have Fedora installed on three different systems however, I won't update them until the problem is fixed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Will Not Auto-connect To New Network After Resume?

Jul 1, 2010

I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. It would not connect to the school network unless I explicitly told it to.irst, I'll describe the fix. If you're having this problem, you can this. Copy the following:

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Stopped Recognizing Wireless Network

Jan 24, 2011

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...

Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.

P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network-manager And Wicd Can See But Not Connect To Network

Jul 10, 2010

I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".

I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.

I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze Update To Network-manager Breaks Functionality

Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Stops Connecting After Update To Network Manager

Mar 30, 2011

I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Behind Proxy Not Working In 10.10?

Dec 10, 2010

I was having trouble getting update-manager to work behind a proxy (without authentication). I tried everything I could find in my search, including setting http_proxy environment variable, setting the System->Preferences->Network Proxy and setting the Synaptic package manager proxy settings. Nothing seemed to work.

It turns out that the problem was that the System->Preferences->Network Proxy allows "automatic" proxy (pac file), and I had used that. update-manager doesn't do anything with this setting I guess. I changed from the automatic setting to a host/port manual setting and it began working.

I suspect this qualifies as a bug. update-manager should do something more reasonable than quietly fail if the settings are for automatic - it would be really nice if it worked, and if not then an error message.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Broke Ethernet?

Mar 9, 2011

Writing this from a 9.10 LiveCD, so I know that my hardware is working fine.My system is running 10.10 normally. Last night, the update manager popped up, as it frequently does, and said I had some packages that could be updated. So I let it update after which it said I needed to reboot. So I did, and now it doesn't recognize my network connection, and even the blinky lights on the port itself stay dark. don't know a lot about networking or stuff under the hood, but I can work a console and/or text editor if someone can tell me where to look and what to type.My hardware is (from "lspci | grep -i eth"):02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
