View 2 RepliesMy system (recently installed FC12) is reporting that there are 563 updates available. When I try and install the updates I get to the stage of "Getting list of updates" and receive the message "The package identifier was not well formed". The details are "Package_ID cannot not be parsed". It further says that "This normally indicates an internal error and should be reported."

All other networking programs are working: yum, wget, skype, opera, nslookup, etc. Firefox and Thunderbird are not able to connect to the network. What happened? My box was working fine earlier! All I can figure is something included in the yum update that I performed today.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just finished a few updates this evening (Friday Jan. 22, 2010). Attempting to launch Sunbird from the menu after the updates finished brought nothing. From the command line:
Code:
BASH:~/-> sunbird
Cannot find Calender runtime directory. Exiting.
Great, just great.
If you also experience this same scenario, there is a quick fix. As root, load /usr/bin/sunbird into a text editor of your choice. Edit the line:
moz_libdir=/usr/lib/sunbird-1.0b2pre
to read:
moz_libdir=/usr/lib/sunbird-1.0pre
I suppose that would be /usr/lib64/ if you're using 64 bit OS.
Whether this was a glitch in the delta rpm rebuild (yum presto) that only might have effected me, or a packaging snafu that's going to catch everyone, I don't know at this time.
A package nss >= 3.12.8 is not available. But it is needed by thunderbird update in the course of "yum update". yum exits with RC 1.Is "--skip-broken" the right way to exclude the thunderbird update ("Resolve depsolve problems by removing packages that are causing problems from the transaction")? Or is there a better way to exclude a package? Problem screen output:
---> Package thunderbird.x86_64 0:3.0.10-1.fc12 set to be updated
--> Processing Dependency: nss >= 3.12.8 for package: thunderbird-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64

Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.
Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled.
Is there any way to get update notifications for security patches on debian jessie. I was using update-manager and update-notifier and wheezy and that worked good, Update-notifier on jessie doesn't seem like its working...

Is there a way to reset the yum database so that it can go and re-apply the patches that have already been installed?
I have a Fedora 12 with the latest patches, and I managed to screw up some files or delete some files to the point where all I have now is the Fedora splash screen when I reboot.
I can get to single-user mode, and the thinking is that if I can get yum to ignore the latest patches that are already installed and pull down and re-install the latest patches, then whatever files that are corrupt or missing will be put back.
I need to build a new kernel. I was directed toI tried following the instructions but I think I may have ended up with way more than I wanted. After just over 3 hours the build exhausted the 5.2GB I had available and fell over. The .config file used was nearly twice the size of the one I supplied. Why was it changed?I don't need an rpm.Are the patches supplied with the 2.6.38 sources required or nice to have?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I do System > Applications > Update System, it brings up a list of updates, and can tell me what each update is meant to fix (i.e. "fixes a bug in the flux capacitor so time travel works again (CVE-01234)"). View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand
Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager
It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.
Anyway - here is the new error
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xvfb is running on Display ":1"
If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).
Tried out the latest Fedora 13 release for kicks, and seem to be liking it so far I'm an openSUSE user and created some RPMs (on openSUSE) for myself which have the Ubuntu font rendering patches in them. I played around with the Fedora RPMs and managed to patch freetype-freeworld, cairo, fontconfig and Xfto achieve subpixel hinting on par with Ubuntu I wanted to share them with the Fedora community, if interested. Is there any place like an openSUSE Build Service for Fedora where I can host them...or maybe some community site that can host them? A screenshot of my desktop:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just set up a FC 12 server and would like to disable the nightly YUM update. However, it appears that the following doesn't work:
# service yum stop
# chkconfig yum off
the system prompts: yum: unrecognized service
I saw that AMZ recently updated the rpm for Fedora to be compatible with FC 11, however the install is still broken on FC12 (obviously since it's built for 11).
My main question is has anyone found a decent workaround, that won't completely hose your system? Should I just wait until they build an rpm for FC12?
Not wanting to speculate why, in the repositories, Fedora doesn't *also* provide a on-KVM enabled kernel counterpart to the default KVM enabled kernel that *is* supplied, I must say I'm frustrated that they haven't done this simple thing.
Considering that everyone who upgrades to KVM enabled FC12 from a previous non-KVM release of Fedora (like FC10) ... considering that these people will be guaranteed to no
longer be able to run VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation after upgrading, is a disappointing oversight by / or intent of Fedora (one that manifests in *lost productivity*).
And try though you may to install the kernel source RPM and compile it after running "make xconfig" to disable KVM support, you usually can't! Fedora kernel compile attempts often die very early in the "make" process, indicating something like ...
"Kernel compile error: No rule to make target `missing-syscalls'
or some other silliness. And when you successfully compile a "kernel.org" kernel, and try to boot it, you get all kinds of missing library errors (etc).
Given that it would be simple to provide both a KVM enabled kernel (as they do), and also a non-KVM enabled kernel (which they don't) so the rest of us can seamlessly continue to run VirtualBox and/or VMWare Workstation after an upgrade - and avoid getting entangled with deciding whether use KVM or XEN for guest O/S's... it's a frustrating misstep to not have done this basic thing (i.e. include a non-KVM kernel). It was a rude awakening when we tried to launch VirtualBox only to have it fail after the upgrade.
Anyway, has anyone successfully compiled their own kernel for FC12 and not get errors after boot? If so, which sources did you use; and what kernel version? In the meantime I'll try out other kernels and compile options.
Has anyone managed to install retroshare on fedora? Where can i find a howto?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my CPU (just before the release of FC12), to a 64-bit compatible Intel Core 2 E7600. Upon the release of FC12 I moved to the 64 bit version (via a clean install).
I noticed that NVIDIA does not work (as many topics on this forum confirm). So I reinstalled and used the FC12 default drivers (I think they are called Nouveau-drivers). This seemed to work, so I ran "yum update", and now all X-windows fail.
KDE complaints: "kstartup4 does not exist or fails" and GNOME also complains (sorry forgot the exact error message)
I'd be happy to send logs, but if these are required, which log you want and where I can find it.
how to get or KDE or GNOME running ? (preferably KDE)

Intel Core 2 Duo E7600 (3.1 GHz)

Every time I open empathy, I am seeing that message. The messenger itself doesn't have a problem (as far as I can see), but that message really bothers me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt was a long time since my last post on this forum. The reason for this was that since FC7 I've moved to Debian Etch and then to Ubuntu, but now I'm back trying FC12 amd64 on my machine and seen how it changed.Almost everything is going well until now. After almost two years I see that a great development was made to build and gui to yum, but synaptic is still superior, imho.
Well, as I said, everything is going well with one exception: the *.tar.gz files.
Doesn't matter if I use the gui or the cli. If I try to compress or decompress any file to tar.gz it fails with the error message bellow. All other file types work perfectly.
Code:
/bin/gtar: Child returned status 1
/bin/gtar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
As I said, I'm running FC12 amd64. Gnome environment.
I have just installed fc12, and everything seemed to go well. After reboot I get a line asking for First login:From what I've found, this should be the firstboot thing, but I don't know the login, and can't find any answer with a search.
