One of our F14 machines was originally set-up with the i386 Kernel. I found out it had a kernel crash and the person tried to fix it by reinstalling the kernel, unfortunately they installed i686. Now some of our software that was setup to work with i386 is not cooperating. Is there a way to switch from the i686 kernel to i386 without reinstalling the system?

I am having a rather odd problem on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation on a 32-bits Intel Core 2 Quad system. When I try to install packages that are not in the repositories, I keep getting the message " Wrong architecture 'i386' " in the Ubuntu Software Center. I have downloaded several packages for 32-bits systems and get the same error every time, for instance., with the Linux 32-bits Debian package for Teamviewer.
In addition to the PC, I have a laptop with an amd64, and I have transfered the pkglist from that machine to my PC to get the same environment. Could that cause any problems of the sort above?
I have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.
I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?
I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.
I recently upgraded my x86_64 system from FC8 to FC10 using Pre-Upgrade. (related blog link) It appears that the upgrade process installed a steaming pile of i386 packages that are duplicates of existing x86_64 packages. I now get update errors because of this package clash. I have searched the fora and the most progress I've been able to make so far is: I apparently had 8 unfinished yum transactions so I did yum-complete-transaction 8 times and have no more incomplete transactions.
The output of package-cleanup --dupes is not very helpful:
Code:
[tim@servy ~]$ sudo package-cleanup --dupes
Setting up yum
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Yet I still get transaction errors when I run updates via synaptic. It checks dependencies and downloads everything and errs when testing changes. This is the error it gives at the moment:
Code:
Test Transaction Errors: file /etc/gconf/schemas/gweather.schemas from install of libgweather-2.24.2-1.fc10.x86_64 conflicts with file from package gnome-applets-1:2.20.1-1.fc8.i386

I'm trying to call a system command in perl and am having an issue with it.
Here's an example of a command i'd like to call: Code: sed -i '4 c192.168.1.4 www.something.com' hosts this is the section in my perl script where I create the variable and call it: Code: $doit = `sed -i '$line c$ip $host hosts'`system($doit); The $line, $ip, and $host variables are working fine becasue I can replace that section with "prints" and they come out fine. I imagine the problem is where I am creating the $doit variable.
I need a program to convert .deb to .rpm run on redhat linux.

I have been trying to install the latest svn of Kaffeine on my Ubuntu Studio 10.04 system.
As per the instructions on the Linux/Kaffeine website [linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Kaffeine] I was able to successfully download the latest release. The command I used was as follows:
(1) svn co svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches/extragear/kde3/multimedia
I went through the next two steps without error
(2) cd multimedia
(3) rm -fr doc k3b kdetv klicker kmplayer kplayer
but ran into problems with the following command:
(4) make -f Makefile.cvs
The error messages I received were as follows:
This Makefile is only for the CVS repository. This will be deleted before making the distribution:
*** YOU'RE USING automake (GNU automake) 1.11.1.
*** KDE requires automake 1.6.1 or newer
make[1]: *** [cvs] Error 1
make: *** [all] Error 2
This error makes little sense to me. It seems to be telling me that I need automake 1.6.1 or newer but apparently I already have 1.11.1 installed so what gives here? Talk about confusing!!!
Perhaps KDE automake and GNU automake are two different things? There is no option to install KDE automake in Ubuntu that I can see. The next command line (5) has me completely confused. I have no idea what I am supposed to be entering.
(5) ./configure --with-extra-includes=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/source/include [for example]
(6) make
(7) cd kaffeine
( sudo make install
