Ubuntu Installation :: Recovering From Crash While Running Update Manager?

Jan 7, 2010

I was running the Update Manager when my system froze due to the failure of Karmic to support motherboards using the Intel 845 chipset.

Although the update did not complete when I rebooted and invoked Update Manager it reported that the system was up to date. How do I reset the system so that I can install the updates?

Ubuntu Installation :: Failure While Running Update Manager?

Mar 26, 2010

While running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.

The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Won't Boot After Running Update Manager?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm a little bit stuck and in need of advice from people who know what they're talking about. I've had Ubuntu on my office PC, home PC and laptop for about a year now and never had a problem that I couldn't solve, until now. I'd not turned my laptop (Lenovo N 500 with Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit using GRUB2) on for about a month so when I did on Monday of this week I noticed that I'd not updated Ubuntu for 27 days, so ran the update manager. After everything was updated I carried on using it as normal but when I tried to turn it on yesterday I get the following issue...

GRUB loads and gives me all the possible boot options. Whatever one I choose, I get the same results. It starts to boot (I see the black screen with the white Ubuntu logo) but this remains on the screen for a very long time, then it goes to a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen and it just sits there indefinitely.

I've tried playing with Super GRUB Disc but admittedly I'm not too sure what I'm doing with it. I've tried using the Ubuntu Installation disc as a Live CD too but with no joy. The main HDD appears fine when in Live CD mode, all my files are there etc.. Is this actually a GRUB issue or something else? It's like GRUB's doing its bit and then it's failing slightly further down the line.

I'm totally out of my depth here and really don't want to have to reinstall everything, I'm sure there's a simply solution.

Ubuntu :: Synaptic Package Manager Crash Update-apt-xapian?

Apr 27, 2011

I upgraded an older system from jaunty 9.04 to karmic 9.10/ Following the upgrade, and about six hours of stable use, I ran the synaptic package manager, to pull in fvwm-crystal and a couple of other nits. Synaptic went into its usual tiring Rebuild Index while the resource hog update-apt-xapian ran away gleefully with the cpu pegged. for longer than I've ever seen it... about 15 minutes, and then the system crashed. and, I mean it crashed hard. I have not seen linux do this in years. Not just a seg fault, the whole machine just crashed (cpu, display, keyboard, the works). Restart and no problem, until I ran Synaptic (Rebuild Index. several minutes, crash).I played this game for a while; thinking the system might just might be overheating... let it cool down, and retried.same result. I tried running one last time, and this time pressed the reload (on Synaptic main panel) prior to the crash.it pulled in the repository updates and completed the Rebuild Index. (no crash)

I have run Synaptic several times since that. downloaded some goodies, and have had no further crashes (although, it does run Rebuild Index every time I start it.and update-apt-xapian pegs the cpu while this is going on. The question(s) I have are:

1) I was not aware that an apt these days can bring down the kernel (no panic, no logging, just down....) How is update-apt-xapian tied into the kernel that permits this vulnerability?

2) There appears (from searches) to be a problem with Synaptic or at least with xapian...?? What is going on with this resource pig..?

3) If I disable xapian and use sudo apt-get instead, instead of Synaptic, does this solve this resource problem?

4) Is there another forum area where this might be addressed besides general?

Fedora Installation :: Recovering The Data After The 'update'?

Jul 27, 2009

I started some months ago with Fedora 10, installed (on a barebones hardware package) from a DVD I got with a magazine. I liked it, and it worked fine. When 'Update Available' messages arrived, I installed the updates. When Fedora 11 arrived the same way, I installed that, a few weeks ago, and it, too, was working fine. A few days ago another 'Update Available' message arrived, and I installed it, unfortunately without backing up first. There was a message then that said to restart computer (which was still working fine).

I restarted the computer, and it would go as far as the moving blue bar across the bottom, then stop with a blinking cursor on a black screen. After trying several things, including the recovery part of the original DVD, I put a different, clean drive in the computer and reinstalled Fedora 10 from the original DVD. What I was hoping is that I could then install the original drive as a secondary one and get access to the files on it.

Ubuntu :: Died After Running Update Manager ?

Apr 7, 2010

Installed from the 9.1 iso got everything set up all tickety boo. using it as a local development server. have been ignoring the update manager, but today for some reason I thought ok, do your thing fatal on restarting it gets as far as the splash screen then dies " * could not access PID file for nmbd" hit esc to get the grub thing up and tried recovery mode same deal so stuck really.

I can hit 'e' and get a basic emacs thing wit a few lines of commands, but not sure what to do there!

I'm not a big terminal user. I can do stuff I need to and leave it at that. Do I have to flatten this machine and re-install anything. Loathe to do that as I spent quite a while getting all the webby bits installed and working as I want to, adn don't really want to have to set all that up again.

Ubuntu :: While Running The Update Manager System Froze

Mar 27, 2010

I'm re-posting here since I've gotten no response in the Installation & Upgrades Forum.

While running the Update Manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. I restarted the Update Manager and still have errors.

The original thread is at: [url]

This is not a crisis. I can re-boot and run without apparent errors. I thought about apt-get -f install but I don't understand enough. Is this a broken dependency problem? If this is a dependency problem will this (apt-get -f install) just clean-up the loose ends and then will the Update Manager pick up the pieces the next time I go through "check"? Is there possible harm doing this?

This system is at 9.10 and was up-to-date until I had this problem yesterday.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu Installation :: Crash During 2.6.31-20 Kernel Update

Mar 8, 2010

Running Karmic on my laptop, I get very occasional kernel panics (suspect it has something to do with the Broadcom WiFi because it only seems to happen with heavy network traffic or HDD access), but just my lucky, this time it Panic'd on me during my recent update -> linux-kernel 2.6.31-20. My system still 'works', but I get the following when doing any other updates, now:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for tango:
Setting up linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic (2.6.31-20.57) ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute installed post-installation script: Exec format error

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic:
linux-image-generic depends on linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic; however:
Package linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing linux-image-generic (--configure):

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-generic:

dpkg: error processing linux-generic (--configure):

Errors were encountered while processing:

Now I cannot seem to get rid of that, and of course, I am stuck in the prior version. Granted everything 'works' - but it bothers me. What's the best way to go about tracking down and hashing out a problem like this?
