Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Behind Proxy Not Working In 10.10?

Dec 10, 2010

I was having trouble getting update-manager to work behind a proxy (without authentication). I tried everything I could find in my search, including setting http_proxy environment variable, setting the System->Preferences->Network Proxy and setting the Synaptic package manager proxy settings. Nothing seemed to work.

It turns out that the problem was that the System->Preferences->Network Proxy allows "automatic" proxy (pac file), and I had used that. update-manager doesn't do anything with this setting I guess. I changed from the automatic setting to a host/port manual setting and it began working.

I suspect this qualifies as a bug. update-manager should do something more reasonable than quietly fail if the settings are for automatic - it would be really nice if it worked, and if not then an error message.

Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Not Working?

Aug 6, 2011

Update manager on my computer (running ubuntu 10.04) isn't working. I can open it up from the System menu, but when I press "check" or "Install updates" it the cursor just spins in circles like it's thinking but it never does anything. I can't even quit the program.

I recently did two things that might have caused the problem.

1) I upgraded yesterday from 8.04 to 10.04. I don't remember if I ran Upgrade Manager or not earlier today but I think I might have.

2) I have a dual-boot system and I re-partitioned my hard drive this evening. I shrunk the partition with Ubuntu on it, moved the swap partition over, and expanded the Windows partition. The first time I logged in after re-partitioning the hard drive I got an information message saying that the Update manager hadn't loaded correctly. That was when I first noticed the problem, so I suspect that it has something to do with me moving around files in the re-partitioning.

Ubuntu Networking :: Proxy ARP Not Working?

Dec 8, 2010

I'm having an issue on multiple Lucid boxes where I can't get proxy ARP to work. This is to be used in conjunction with openswan IPSec. I've enabled forwarding and disabled sending/accepting ICMP redirects for each interface as per openswan's requirements. I've added the proxy arp lines for all, default, eth0, and lo to sysctl.conf:

Code:
net.ipv4.conf.eth0.proxy_arp = 1

I then connect the IPSec client, and I have connectivity to the server. When I try to ping (or otherwise access) something else on its subnet, I reach the intended target, but then it ARPs for the sending machine, and the Ubuntu server doesn't respond to the ARP.

I have an ARP entry that looks like this, added via arp -s 192.168.254.100 -D eth0 -i eth0 pub:

Address: 192.168.254.100 (the correct virtual IP for the client)
HWtype: *
HWaddress: <from_interface>
Flags Mask: MP
Iface: eth0

Best I can tell, everything is in order... I can listen in with wireshark on the server and see that it's receiving the ARPs, but I can't get it to respond to them.

The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Broke Ethernet?

Mar 9, 2011

Writing this from a 9.10 LiveCD, so I know that my hardware is working fine.My system is running 10.10 normally. Last night, the update manager popped up, as it frequently does, and said I had some packages that could be updated. So I let it update after which it said I needed to reboot. So I did, and now it doesn't recognize my network connection, and even the blinky lights on the port itself stay dark. don't know a lot about networking or stuff under the hood, but I can work a console and/or text editor if someone can tell me where to look and what to type.My hardware is (from "lspci | grep -i eth"):02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Ubuntu :: Update Manager "Check" Button Not Working In Natty?

Jun 21, 2011

I can open Update Manager fine and it runs though it's little gambit of "Building data structures" etc...

Up at the top it says "The package information was last updated 13 hours ago."

Before I updated to Natty I used to be able to just click on the "Check" button and it would prompt me for my password and then check for updates.

Now if I click the "Check" button it goes grey for a bit, never asks me for my password and then just comes back up with the same "The package information was last updated 13 hours ago." message.

However, if I actually load up the terminal and type out "sudo apt-get update" then go back and load the Update Manager again it will say "The package information was last updated less than one hour ago." which is what should be happening when I click the "Check" button.

I've tried deleting my lists but this didn't resolve the issue. Any clue what else could be happening here?

I also noticed that I had some updates available when I loaded Synaptic Package Manager that didn't show up when i loaded the Update Manager.

I've also tried re-installing update-manager. I've gone as far as to do a complete removal and installed it again. Still not working right.

I think it has something to do with the fact that it's not prompting me for my password like it used to...

Ubuntu Networking :: Manager Not Working After Dist Upgrade

Jul 14, 2011

I just did a dist upgrade on two computers. One of them was fine with the network manager, but the other, netbook, now refuses to start the service. If I do service start network-manager I'll get a message saying a process started, but it must be immediately dying since I can't find the pid or any network manager processes at all. I looked at daemon.log and noticed it was complaining about nm-system-settings.cfg not being there. One question I have is how is this not getting generated? It's not in the deb so somehow it must be generated. I put a fake file in there and even put some data from a pastebin I found online that looked promising, and the message in daemon.log went away but the pids were still dropping off.

I have many problems with nm-applet, but I don't want to go into it so much now that the service can't start. The problem I do see popping up is something like: ** (nm-applet:2622): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service. Message: 'Connection ":1.24" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file' (had to pull message from online, don't remember the exact message) I've tried installing and reinstalling, doing a purge uninstall. Next thing I was going to try is an aptitude uninstall of all of the dependencies in case something got weird in the upgrade.
