Ubuntu Networking :: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E Doesn't Detect 1000Mbps
Jan 5, 2010
I'm trying to configure the following network card to work with a 1000Mbps switch:
Code:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 01)
I think the problem is the network card module. When I run
ethtool eth0 nothing of 100Mbps is showed:

I've two computers with 1000Mbps cards, one opensuse 11.2 32 bits (AMD K7 over 1Ghz and 2MB RAM) and the other Opensuse 11.3 11.3 64 bits (single processor, 3GB). Both of the cards are configured with skge. The swith is an SMC 10/100/1000 and it reports connection at 1000Mbps on both cards. The i386 is a server and the other is a client.
I've in the client some directories of the server mounted by nfs.
I'm testing the connection copying long files (1GB for instance) and the copy reaches 14MBps at most, and most of the time it is more or less at 10MBps, which is too far from 1000Mbps.
It may be a problem of configuration? The switch is not good enough? or may be another kind of problem ?

I have this wired problem with my realtek rtl8101e ethernet. It keeps on disconnecting randomly with my router. My computer is connected to D-link router via LAN cable. This problem does not occur in my windows xp os.
I have to suspend and resume my Debian os (wheezy 7.6 KDE) to get the ethernet connection up everytime it disconnects with my router.
These are my ethernet details

I have an ASUS M4A785-m and it has the Realtek 8112L gigabit nic. The weird thing is, the 10.10 rc saw the nic card just fine, and windows sees the card so it's not disabled in the bios.
Ubuntu says i have no network connections and i need to get internet. Any suggestions?
I should also note that i'm running from the livecd and lspci shows that it detects my NIC. but my NIC isn't "detected" in that it can be used.

I've been doing some reading and I cannot work out why I'm having this problem. My 32-bit Ubuntu Server running 10.10 has a Realtek RTL8111 ethernet card which supports up to 1000mbps. However, when I run sudo ethtool eth0 I get:
Code:
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
[Code]....
After running sudo ethtool -s 1000 to try and change speed to 1000mbps, the output is still the same as before. Why is this :S?

I need to simulate a 500Mbps link with a 100ms delay and a loss probability of 0.0001% on an ethernet link between two gigabit ethernet cards...I tryed to use these commands:
# tc qdisc add dev lo root handle 1:0 netem delay 100ms loss 0.0001
# tc qdisc add dev lo parent 1:1 handle 10: tbf rate 500Mbit buffer XXXX limit YYYYY
But during some simulation throughputs are very low ( 190Kbps....210Kbps....) for different values of XXXX and YYYY.... (I don't want that the loss probability is caused by the buffer and the limit value but only by the loss probability setted on netem...)

i'm using a dell n5010 recently i installed ubuntu9.10 in my laptop and it doesn't seem to detect wireless connections, so, i googled it and downloaded a driver from broadcom and tried to install it as per the authors instructions and nothing seems to work well, the broadcom drivers are not detected in the additional drivers and when i try to install linux-wlan-ng tarballs it doesn't seem to work even, though i have gcc(i think thats it), so, i installed my windows driver through nsdgtk but it says that it is "unable to see if hardware is present" but, when i click ok on the error the wireless network applet says the hardware is present and when i click the network configuration tool it gives the error message "could not find a network configuration tool" and after configuring my network with network tools in administration it says "no wireless extensions" when i type 'iwconfig' and there is no ip address when i type "ipconfig".

I'm using Xubuntu Natty at the moment, on an Acer Aspire 5739G. Figured I would go to Realtek's site and get the most recent soundcard driver, since the built-in subwoofer has never worked on Linux for me.
I used the automatic install script, then when it tried to probe for other devices, suddenly I had no sound.
I'm currently getting
Code:
korin@corrosion:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found...
I tried reinstalling the ALSA driver, but to no avail. I now have no sound, and no idea a) why this failed, and b)

I updated my Slackware installation to 13.37 today. I was running current (a few weeks old).
I recently bought a new set of 2.1 speakers, so i thought of re-running alsaconf and then alsamixer.
Thats when i got this strange error:
Code:
These are the contents of my /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Code:
Here is the output of lspci and dmesg:
lspci:
Code:
dmesg:
Code:
Ok...The funny thing is, the sound still works! (Alsamixer shows all the 6 channels of my previous 5.1 speaker system).
Additional Info:
*Am using a customized kernel - version 2.6.39-rc5.
**It does not work in the default Kernel 2.6.37.6, not even in 2.6.38.
*** It works in kernel version 2.6.35.x and 2.6.36.x. (I checked!)

I've got Puppy Linux on a USB key, and yesterday, while I was on the internet with it, it hanged. I didn't know what to do, and I rebooted from the button (I now know what to do ). The problem is that, after rebooting, Puppy doesn't recognise the router. I've tried to apply the drivers that are on Puppy, but there aren't any compatible.
My router is a Xavi 7968 and my Network Card is:
NIC Fast Ethernet PCI Familia RTL 8139 from Realtek
(On Realtek's website, there isn't any driver linux-compatible)

I just installed x64 Fedora, and as the title says, NM fails to detect my WiFi card. It's an Encore ENLWI-N with a RaLink RT2800 chipset. The card does show up when I run lspci, although iwconfig yields nothing. Not sure if this helps, but when Ias running Karmic Koala, Ubuntu detected the card immediately and required no configuration

I have a Samsung N130 with a Realtek 8192 wifi card (possibly 8192e, I'm not sure) and I am trying to run Fedora 12 on it. I used to run Ubuntu until trying their latest beta and realizing it's not very good, so I looked for something else. Ubuntu was at least easy to get the wifi working with just a few quick commands that were written out, word for word, in order, on the Ubuntu forums. I tried openSUSE on here and it didn't have wifi working out of the box either but people on their forums refused to give me actual instructions and just kept bumping me from thread to thread with people giving vague advice or else just telling me I was looking in the wrong place. I'm hoping that someone can give me clear and detailed instructions on how to get this wifi card working. Keep in mind that I am coming from Ubuntu and so I'm not super comfortable in CLI, if I need to do some CL stuff I will need clear and detailed instructions on how to do that.

Upgraded my laptop from 2Gb to 4Gb RAM and ubuntu doesn't detect it. I've read all the posts on this issue and I have:
1) installed a PAE kernel and made it the boot option. Output from uname -a is: Linux tensor 2.6.31-17-generic-pae #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:23:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
2) removed all the non PAE kernels (a post I found mentioned this if the PAE kernel doesn't sort it out after a reboot)
3) tried to install the linux server image & headers but this didn't work. I later found articles discussing how you couldn't do this under Koala anyway.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 and it is currently setup on a system running 2 SCSI drives with an adaptec 2940 UW (non RAID) PCI card both are 18.4 GB. Windows XP is installed on the first one and I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto the second, but the installation doesn't recognize that windows is installed on the first drive and only gives me that drive as an option to install... Gparted recognizes both, one as an NTFS file system (sdb) and the second as a unpartitioned drive (sdc) and for some reason is placing the usb drive as sda which i'm assuming might cause some issues with grub boot loader later on after the drive is removed. what might be causing this issue and how i would go about fixing it... should i just go to 10.04 and upgrade to 11.04 after?

I have a little problem. As soon as I boot my computer, Grub gives me an error 17. It happened after I tried to resize my Windows partition with a program. I have a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04.I've tried everything I could find on this forum and on the rest of the internet, but nothing was working. Most of them require a Windows CD (god knows where it is) or reinstalling grub and all that stuff, but it's all not working.I'm currently on a Ubuntu Live CD. Gparted doesn't detect any of my partitions, but just says 232 GB unallocated space. Palimpsest Disk Utility and the Explorer see all my partitions though EXCEPT my Windows 7 partition I tried to resize.

I'm trying to hook up my TV to my MacBook1,1 laptop running the Lucid Lynx Beta. The TV is connected to the laptop via a mini-DVI to DVI-I adaptor, which is connected to a DVI-I to video adaptor, and this is connected to the TV via a component cable.
Under OS X, after plugging in the mini-DVI cable, the TV automatically becomes a secondary display for the laptop (extending the current screen), so from a hardware perspective everything seems ok. Under Ubuntu, plugging in the mini-DVI cable elicits no response from XRandR whatsoever (xrandr -q reports DVI1 disconnected both before and after). URandR and the regular "Detect Displays" button in the "Monitors" preference app do nothing. The laptop has an Intel GMA 950 chipset, and the Intel driver is running successfully (Compiz works fine). I have a clean xorg.conf (generated by X -configure), except for the addition of "Virtual 2048 2048" in one of the SubSections of the Screen section. I'd be happy to post the full xorg.conf if it would be useful.
So far I have tried xorg.conf tweaks, and I have followed instructions to manually tell xrandr to output to DVI1 as described in the comment by Marko Mikulicic here.

I'm running 10.04 on a Radeon HD 4650 card with fglrx. The driver installation went without a hitch, and the log file contained no errors.
When I try to run
Code:
aticonfig --initial
i get the response
Code:
Found fglrx primary device section
Unable to find any supported Screen sections
Running
[Code]....
My best guess is that I have to write an Xorg.conf file, in which I say what type of monitor I have.
I cannot do that, as I need to shut down the Xserver in order to make it generate my xorg.conf file. When I shut it down I get the black screen.

When I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop, the partitions menu that appears during the installation doesn't detect my sata hard drive. I have Windows 7 on a partition, left a space unpartitioned, then tried to install it. Coudn't detect the disk, so I booted to live ubuntu, and created a ext3 partiton with Gparted, it still doesn't detect. Also tried completly formating the disc. Still Doesn't detect. The strange thing is that in the ubuntu desktop when i boot with Live usb, the disk is there. I was also able to create the partition as i described before.

But 11.3 doesn't detect the dvd-rom, much less the disc. 11.4 did and the sound was much better than with my other Linux os. How can we fix this?

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and the boot loader does not detect my keyboard. Does the windows boot loader only support PS2 keyboards? Would there be a workaround... like install DOS drivers for it? I have a logitech s520 keyboard.
When in Windows, I can select what OS to use, but is there a way I can select which OS to use while booted into Ubuntu? Is there a program that will let me modify the windows boot loader from within Ubuntu?
