Ubuntu Networking :: Modem Upgraded - PPPoE Config Won't Work
Jun 23, 2010
I've been using an old modem from 2007, which my ISP calls Type I. It didn't have wireless connectivity and I used pppoeconf to setup my connection - username and password and set it to connect at boot time and everything was fine till today. I bought a Type II modem from my ISP and had to return the type I modem to them. Since the technician had no knowledge of Ubuntu (or Linux in general), he configured the modem in Windows 7, tested that the connection was working, tested the wireless connection in my netbook running XP and then he left.
Now I can't connect through pppoeconf in Ubuntu (running 9.10). The terminal says eth0 is listed but the 'access concentrator' or something like that isn't responding (no other process was running at that time). I feel very vulnerable while browsing in Windows so I want to get back to Ubuntu ASAP. Oh, and here's the output when I run "dhclient eth0"
Code:
Listening on LPF/eth0/00:16:76:33:d2:70
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:16:76:33:d2:70
Sending on Socket/fallback
DHCPDISCOER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
DHCPOFFER of 192.168.1.5 from 192.168.1.1

My adsl modem is in bridge mode . I can connect to internet via pppoe . pppoeconf recognise the pppoe in eth0 and setup a connection and i can use it .. Now , the Problem :
How can I setup a pppoe connection using pppoeconf so that it uses wireless ? I set the wireless mode to bridge in modem settings . But , after that , the access point stopped appearing in "aps in range" in network manager and i can't connect to it . pppoeconf also doesn't recognise wlan0 as a valid pppoe link . but dat is normal since i don't think it can check if wlan0 is pppoe without wlan0 being connected to the modem's wireless network .
SO , HOW CAN I CONNECT TO INTERNET WITH MODEM IN BRIDGE MODE AND CONNECTING VIA THE WIRELESS INTERFACE OF THE MODEM ??
sidenote : hey , is pppoe over wireless even possible ? coz the datalink layer of wlan is not ethernet rite ?
I have been dist hunting ever since I bought my new desktop in Sept 08. some live cd or even install cd work or don't-- but I have learned some workarounds i.e. pci=nomsi at boot for example. Problem I have now is I have wired DSL (modem only) and need to manually connect. I can install tkpppoe running ./go-gui command but everytime I do I can send out packets but not ever recieving (correct me if I have this backwards). in other words activity is showing upload but not on downloads and can't ping either ip or domain or browse. been trying to find out what's going on I think it may have to do with the eth0 should not pull up an IP at boot which seems to be 192.147.x.x or like that according to ifconfig -a Otherwords, when I covert my modem to a router every is fine but manually connecting with PPPoE software that's another story. I would go with the router mode but the Westell model I currently have sucks with it's firewall. I usually go with a software based firewall. call me old skool lol. Need some advice.. I miss my journey with linux Even though I have Vista Premium solid as a rock--- I miss the special customizations only nix can provide and better security.
So i have a d-link modem and the DHCP server is not running. I need to access the internal config to do some troubleshooting. IP is supposed to be 192.168.1.1, but I only have my DSL ppoe IP, and can not access it.
i have a routed and a PPPoE type internet connection, recently i tried a thing in terminal with the pppoeconf option since the network manager has problems with connectiong to the internet with a pppoe DLS connection, or anyway in my case it does not work. Ok i did the pppoeconf thing i inserted my pass and my user and left the program to do its thing, ok it all worked fine but then i restarted my system and suddenly the network manager did not want to recognize my network it hat as options some weird ipupdown options for connection and when i tried the pppoeconf thing again it did not work. what could i do to reactivate at least one way my connection, if i understood correctly the terminal type connecting and the network manager are two different things. now i am using my router and it should connect but the network manager still does not see the connection.
I cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
My network is windows pppoe. How can I configure it for Fedora 11? Is there any graphical configuration tool available for that? Also, ubuntu 9.04 logs into pppoe network after restarting as I've made some changes in /etc/network/interfaces. Is there any option available for Fedora 11 to automatically log in to pppoe network after restarting?
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on an external USB drive on a Dell D630 laptop.
My issue is I can't get my 3G modem to work. It is a K3770 Huawei modem.
When I plug it in after boot up it is not recognized at all as far as I can tell. (Which is not very far).
When I plug it in before boot up it shows up as a CD rom drive. I have usb-modeswitch is installed. (It was installed by default during the 11.04 installation.)
what to do to get this to work? Remember my Ubuntu is running on an external USB drive so anything that switches USB off even temporarily won't work. (I don't think).
I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:
Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.
I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop running Ubuntu 8.04LTS. It has a Conexant HSF modem/chipset, for which I bought the Linuxant HSF modem driver- 56K max.It is installed and it "functions",ie: it will connect to my ISP and I can start to browse (Firefox), but it will inevitably disconnect itself. At this point it is always down to "turtle speed of 4800bps".I have consulted with Linuxant Support and they suggested different modem init. strings - mainly different modulations - V34,V90,V92 w/variations. Nothing has made any signif. diff. They won't offer any further help.My question is: Could it be that Ubuntu 8.04 specifically, or Ubuntu of any version, is the source of the problem??
I have Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD which loads up fine, and I was hoping to try the HSF driver with it, but I need to get Kernel Source pkg. and that will take 2+ hrs. to download by dialup , so haven't tried it yet.
My brother installed Fedora 8 on my 2004 Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop with a 56k MDC modem. I cannot figure out how to get the dial modem to work! Modem Device?, Baud Rate?, Flow Control?, Modem Volume?
I have a compaq mini 110-1000 with integrated 3g modem and natty narwhal. I bought a vodafone data sim card, I've configured the network manager but it doesn't work! All solution I found are possible only with the hp connection manager. but I've removed windows!!

My USB-modem and my freerunner phone is no longer recognized by fedora. Last time this happened I just reinstalld Fedora because I had no ida what caused the problem. But now I recognized that virtualbox was the last package I installed before the problem occured. I tried to uninstall virutalbox but the problem remained. Is there a way to reset all the network settings without reinstalling fedora?
I'm trying to make a Huawei K3715 HSDPA modem work in Ubuntu 10.04.1. I plug it in, and it loads two mass storage devices (one CDRom containing the Windows software, and one 2GB drive that appears empty), but I don't really know where to go from here.
Note that I replaced the stock network manager with Wicd, as I find it more reliable in picking up wifi connections. I'm not sure if it's suitable for connecting the HSPA modem though.
I have a ZTE HSUPA USB Modem Model:MF636 which used to work great and then is not longer detected.
I am using Fedora 12 and was having problems with the modem not been properly detected and filed a bug, which turned not to be a problem of NetworkManager, but an issue with udev. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603433
I followed instructions to edit /lib/udev/rules.d/61-option-modem-modeswitch.rules and then it worked fine.
Now the modem is again not properly detected. Here is a copy of the results from dmesg code...
I have tried restoring the file that I edited. It was back to the stated previusly reported. I also have tried to run an older kernel. Then I updated to the latest kernel available for Fedora 12. Nothing seems to work.
I have fedora 14 and reliance netconnect Huawei EC325 modem. I am not enable to configure it. How to configure the modem by providing step-by-step instruction
find and install modem driver for the Alcatel X200 USB modem?
I've been all over the internet trying to locate Linux drivers but no success. Alcatel's website says is not supported, only in Windows. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to use the X200 in Linux.
i'm running Kubuntu karmic and i've been using a 3G Huawei E1552 modem to connect to the internet, everything was going well when suddenly my modem stopped working. I've tried reconfiguring everything, i even reinstalled kubuntu from scratch with no success. Here's a part of my /var/log/debug

I have followed the instructions at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/~dugan/setting-up-slackware.html (under "Making Firefox Perfect"), but I still get the error message"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program."
Only place where i need midi is mainly when using Tuxguitar. I tried tuxguitars settings, but it shows only tuxguitar sequencer and midi-through port 0. Haven't done this before so i really don't know where to start from..?
I use win7 bit and input the ISP username and password, it runs well, but after I swap system to Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, I cant use the username and password to run DSL successfully.I use the
PHP Code: sudo pppoeconf
A text-based menu program will guide you through the next steps, which are:
Confirm that your Ethernet card is detected. Enter your username (provided by your ISP). Enter your password (provided by your ISP).
If you already have a PPPoE Connection configured, you will be asked if it may be modified.Popular options: you are asked if you want the 'noauth' and 'defaultroute' options and to remove 'nodetach' - choose "Yes".[code]................
I am a newbie to Linux just installed Ubuntu 9.10 using WUBI. I am not able to connect to Internet using PPPoe. I went thru some of the threads and tried PPPoeconf and it works. So how to configure Network Manager so that it works.
