Ubuntu Networking :: Can Mount WD My Book World Edition NAS In Ubuntu 11 Without Extensive Terminal Work?

Jul 9, 2011

Can I mount a WD My Book World Edition NAS in Ubuntu 11 without extensive terminal work? The NAS has a static ip, it can be ping'd from Ubuntu, and my Windows machines access it just fine, no passwords required.I have not been able to find a way to make this work. Nothing against the terminal per se, it's just still a little too unfamiliar and I keep hitting error road blocks on this one.

Ubuntu :: Western Digital My Book World Edition II Enclosure Failed

Mar 29, 2010

My Western Digital My Book World Edition II enclosure failed recently and as normal, WD support sucks. A friend told me he salvaged his by looking at the individual disks with Linux. How can I recover the disks, which seem to be fine.I can put them into an enclosure that supports JBOD and Raid 1 and it will see the drives when hooked up to a Windows XP system. It does not see anything on the drives but it knows they are there. I have a copy of some data recovery software Easus Data Recovery Wizard and it finds loads of data on the drives but recovery, according to the timer, will take weeks. How can I make Ubuntu see each drive and mount it?

General :: Formatting WD My Book World Edition External Harddisk With Ext3?

May 18, 2010

I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition external harddisk with blue rings. I filled it up and now want to delete the data and start over. I'm set in my ways and have been accustom to reformatting harddisks periodically (sector maintainance, etc.) It's worked for me as I've luckily have not had a disk crash in 25 years. My webapp is not helping me with the reformat and neither is Western Digital tech support. I've heard that it was factory formatted with something called Linux ext3. Does this make sense? Has anyone had any experience with reformatting external harddisks being used as a NAS (home use).

Ubuntu :: World Book Network Drive Not Recognized ?

So my World Book Network Drive stopped working all of a sudden and I decided to remove it from the enclosure and plug it in via USB. I can see it in Disk Utility, I took a snapshot of it and attached it here. Normally when I plug a hard disk into ubuntu you can see it in places, not the case with this one. I would like to try and retrieve the data from it?

Hardware :: WD MyBook World Edition II 4TB - Reusing Drives?

May 24, 2011

This is a problem I've been working at on and off for quite a long time now. I acquired one of these devices from a thrift store and eventually decided that the drives would serve better mounted in my desktop PC, rather than hooked up to a router where large-scale backups are made unbearably slow.

What I quickly discovered is that these drives don't want to appear to any OS. The Windows installer doesn't see them. My Linux distro (at the time) didn't see them. A GParted live CD didn't see them. DBAN didn't see them. The BIOS, however, saw them, so I banged my head against a few possible solutions.

Martin Hinner's blog seemed promising but didn't have the information I wanted. This blog only had disassembly guides/photos, and no info (that I was able to find) on actually getting the drives to work in a Linux system. I'd love to have an extra 4TB of storage in my desktop.

I have just purchased an Asus EeePC 1001HA netbook and I would like to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 (love the look and the brilliant interface), but I can't get the wireless network to work. I am currently running from a 4Gb USB stick that has the LiveCD on it with a 1Gb persistence. The network notification area only shows wired and VPN connections. I have tried installing the Ralink 3090 driver but I have had no luck in getting the wireless to work.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Terminal Startup Slow (11 Natty Edition)?

Aug 16, 2011

After several upgrades (from 8.xx) I noticed Gnome terminal took about 4 seconds to open an window and another 4 seconds to give me a prompt. This is excruciating when blasting out CLI in dozens of terminals ssh'd into dozens of machines. Tabs were no different.

Fix was: Comment out anything in ~/.bashrc that references xterm. BOOM less than 1s total to prompt.

If it's faster than I can get my mouse hand back to the keyboard to start blasting CLI, it's good enough

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extensive Music File Organization?

Jan 9, 2011

On Windows I used to use a great little music player/organizer called MusicBee, which had extensive file organization capabilities; among them features like fixed length and conditional statements. Now, what I'd like to have on Ubuntu is program that organizes my music files as follows: (the colon indicating a fixed length)

Code:
Music/
[Artist]/
[Album] ([Year:4])/
[TrackNumber:2] - [Title]

So far that isn't too difficult, is it? But I do have some multi-disc albums, which I used to get easily organized as follows, using a conditional statement like "isempty()":

Code:
Music/
[Artist]/
[Album] ([Year:4])/
[DiscNumber].[TrackNumber:2] - [Title]

Thus, the big issue here is, since I've been looking for weeks now, does there exist a program that can handle fixed length as well as conditional statements to proper organize my music files?

Ubuntu Networking :: Do NFS Mount Options Actually Work?

Jan 23, 2010

I have a bunch of nfs mounts from my MythTV backend to my netbook, both running 9.10. Due to the lousy Atheros wireless driver, it typically loses connection at least every half hour. The nfs mounts are mounted soft, intr, so programs should get an error trying to talk to a server they can't contact, and the request should be interruptable. Instead, they just lock up, can't be interrupted, and the netbook can't even shut down after the network failure because it hangs trying to clean up before shutting down.

So do these nfs options actually work in Ubuntu? 'mount' shows the nfs directory mounted with the correct options, so it doesn't seem to be any kind of configuration problem... it just doesn't do what I'm telling it to do.

Ubuntu :: Q -Touch Does NOT Work Properly In 10.10 Netbook Edition

Oct 17, 2010

I am very very new to linux and this is my first experience in linux..I preferred to start with UBUNTU 10.10...I downloaded the last release of 10.10 netbook and desktop edition. I have a TABLET WIN7 PC, it does not have any Keyboard and it supports multi-touch, and works properly on Win7.

My Tablet name is THD PX1 with 1.66 Intell atom processor, 1 GB Ram, 256MB Intell 3d Accelerated VGA, 160 GB H.D.D and 3*USB2 and ... ( And at the back of my Netbook wrote that it supports LINUX and Win both) After I started the netbootin and provided live USB Netbook UBUNTU edition, I used it on my tablet and started it.

When I logged in, I faced with a STRANGE, REALLY STRANGE EVENT...THE TOUCH DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY, You have to put 2 fingers on it to work as a touch screen tablet, else it does not work as a touchable tablet... And it is not multi touch... YOU HAVE TO PUT 2 Fingers ON IT....! I attached a Wireless USB + Mouse to it and try to install UBUNTU on it, maybe it works, ( I HOPE), but steel it is downloading the updates in installing process..

Ubuntu Networking :: Gvfs-mount Doesn't Work Through Ssh?

Jan 26, 2010

setup consist of three machines: 2 servers (A and B)(ubuntu) and my local laptop Server A is a company controlled server which holds project data Server B is our office local server, which we use for development purposes. The problem occurs when i ssh from my local laptop to server B. After loggin in, i execute a script to transfer data from A to B. This script mounts server A using gvfs-mount. It fails to mount completely and gives me the following error

Code:

Error mounting location: volume doesn't implement mount

However if i log onto server B, using the servers keyboard and monitor (using a gnome session) i can execute the line. To verify that it's something related to the ssh login, i tried the following: (My local laptop is also running ubuntu) from laptop open a terminal. See the gvfs mount work as expected. open another terminal and ssh localhost tried to execute gvfs-mount from the local ssh session and i get the above mentioned error. After googling a bit, i found that it might related to dbus (which i know _nothing_ about) and i tried

Code:

dbus-launch gvfs-mount and then tried to gvfs-mount server A, but it fails again.

Ubuntu :: Alien Arena 2006 Gold Edition Will Not Work

Jun 29, 2011

Back in 2007 I got a cover CD off a Linux mag, which included a game called Alien Arena 2006 Gold Edition for Linux. It was a nice game (1st person shoot-'em-up like Quake and Doom) and I'd like to play it again. Unfortunately I lost the CD. Alien Arena is in Synaptic. But when I install it, I can't get it to work. The mouse pointer will not work in the game menu window, arrow keys don't work... I get some music, but that's about it. I figure maybe it won't work because the new, improved Alien Arena won't play nice with my computer (Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70 GHz, the very same computer I used in 2007, but now with added RAM - 1GB instead of 256MB) so I ooked for the 2006 gold edition I knew and loved before.

A little googling turned up the original game - alienarena-2006ge-x86.run. But when I try to run it, I get a little window saying:
Alien Arena 2006: Gold Edition for Linux
Verifying archive integrity... All good
Uncompressing Alien Arena 2600: Gold Edition for Linux
/home/t0p/.setup20181: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-1.2.so.0; cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Press Return to close this window#

I've tried to find this libgtk-1.2.so.0, but so far unsuccessfully - plus, even if I find it I don't know what I'm meant to do with it. All I want is a nice 1st person shoot-'em-up that will work nicely on my computer. It's worked before... but not any more.

Ubuntu Installation :: Broken OS Selection In GRUB (extensive Details Inside)?

May 10, 2010

I have installed these OS's in this order:

1 - Vista
2 - Ubuntu Server 9.04
3 - Ubuntu Desk 10.04
4 - BT4

I recently upgraded my most often used OS (#3) to 10.04 version and it updated GRUB to GRUB2 as part of the dist-upgrade. I have a feeling that I wasn't careful enough when installing BT4 or I made a mistake in the partitioning. I had plenty of space that was free waiting to be used by some other os and I designated some of that space for BT4.

When I got it all installed (off of a USB live boot) I rebooted and noticed it was back to grub one. The Vista install and the Ubuntu Server install both work still... but the recently updated (to Grub2) Ubuntu Desk install now hangs immediately after selecting it and pressing enter in Grub. I can mount the partition within BT4 just fine and see that all my data is still there, it just won't boot.

What I've tried Using BT4 to install Grub2. (no luck) Installing Grub1.5 back after finding Grub2 didn't work. (no luck) My plan When I get home from work today I'm going to take the "quiet" option off of the boot command in Grub for that Ubuntu OS and see if there's any error it's dumping before it hangs.
Hope that someone has had this issue before and can just tell me a straight forward way of resolving this issue. I'd prefer to use GRUB2 as my boot loader.

Cliff Notes Had other OS's installed Updated to newest Ubuntu (installed GRUB2 as the new bootloader)Used some spare disk to install BT4 New Ubuntu that used Grub2 is now the only OS that won't boot
