Hardware :: WD MyBook World Edition II 4TB - Reusing Drives?
May 24, 2011
This is a problem I've been working at on and off for quite a long time now. I acquired one of these devices from a thrift store and eventually decided that the drives would serve better mounted in my desktop PC, rather than hooked up to a router where large-scale backups are made unbearably slow.
What I quickly discovered is that these drives don't want to appear to any OS. The Windows installer doesn't see them. My Linux distro (at the time) didn't see them. A GParted live CD didn't see them. DBAN didn't see them. The BIOS, however, saw them, so I banged my head against a few possible solutions.
Martin Hinner's blog seemed promising but didn't have the information I wanted. This blog only had disassembly guides/photos, and no info (that I was able to find) on actually getting the drives to work in a Linux system. I'd love to have an extra 4TB of storage in my desktop.

I installed Fedora 12 from the Live CD and all is going well. Using most of the defaults, including Gnome.I can't see my WD MyBook World on the network. It came with software for Mac and Win, but for Linux, they just say contact your Linux Provider.

My Western Digital My Book World Edition II enclosure failed recently and as normal, WD support sucks. A friend told me he salvaged his by looking at the individual disks with Linux. How can I recover the disks, which seem to be fine.I can put them into an enclosure that supports JBOD and Raid 1 and it will see the drives when hooked up to a Windows XP system. It does not see anything on the drives but it knows they are there. I have a copy of some data recovery software Easus Data Recovery Wizard and it finds loads of data on the drives but recovery, according to the timer, will take weeks. How can I make Ubuntu see each drive and mount it?

I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition external harddisk with blue rings. I filled it up and now want to delete the data and start over. I'm set in my ways and have been accustom to reformatting harddisks periodically (sector maintainance, etc.) It's worked for me as I've luckily have not had a disk crash in 25 years. My webapp is not helping me with the reformat and neither is Western Digital tech support. I've heard that it was factory formatted with something called Linux ext3. Does this make sense? Has anyone had any experience with reformatting external harddisks being used as a NAS (home use).

Can I mount a WD My Book World Edition NAS in Ubuntu 11 without extensive terminal work? The NAS has a static ip, it can be ping'd from Ubuntu, and my Windows machines access it just fine, no passwords required.I have not been able to find a way to make this work. Nothing against the terminal per se, it's just still a little too unfamiliar and I keep hitting error road blocks on this one.

I want to reuse a socket without closing the same. I am running a client and it connects to a server. The server shuts down in between and comes up. So after this I want to reconnect to server without closing my socket and creating another one. Is there any way?

I wanted to supply mplayer with the output of find command as arguments. The error returned showed spliced names of files whenever spaces occurred. I have subdirectories in my /home/my_user_name/Music/ directory, and in them multiple *.oga music files. The actual command that I issued was
Code:
mplayer $(find /home/my_user_name/Music/ -name "*.oga")
mplayer started but then was looking for broken file names. I am thinking quoting has to do with it to preserve the filename as one string but different attempts were met with inroads:
Code:
mplayer `find /home/my_user_name/Music/ -name "*.oga"`
gave me the same result and
Code:
mplayer `"find /home/my_user_name/Music/ -name *.oga"`
complained about wrong mplayer syntax.

I've been using a WD MyBook terrabyte USB drive for several months with no problem. Several days ago, I used the "safely remove drive" option but then unplugged the cable before the removal process had finished.
Now when I plug the drive in, the WD SmartWave section of the drive will mount. This is additional software for Windows computers that came with the drive and that I don't use. The main drive itself, though, will not mount. The drive doesn't show up on the left side of a navigation window, either.
I can see the drive using Disk Utility. It is located at /dev/sbd. (a) mount this drive or (b) recover its data so I can format it? I'd much prefer (a), of course. Regarding my level of tech savvy: I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years, but I chose Ubuntu because it allows me to use Linux while still remaining relatively ignorant about things, which is my comfort zone.

im having problems connecting mybook 2 with my laptop. Everything was ok and running perfectly and there was no changes in my laptop or upgrades and it stop working. I was not able to see the computers in my network then I fixed it I can see them but when I try to browse the files the OS tells me that is unable to mount location and failed to retrieve share list from server. The funny part is that if I go to Places>Connect to server and type my mybook ip address, my laptop can connect and I can browse the files. I really dont know what is the problem. My firewall is down so I dont think that is the problem. If anyone can help me with these because I know im able to connect to my mybook but i am unable to connect to any other laptop or my WD-Tv live.

Ubuntu 10.10, 32 bit.I've got a 2TB WD external disk which has USB 3.0, and I have a USB 3.0 PCIe card.Plugging the drive into the card has no effect at all. The drive powers itself up, but the kernel log is silent. A USB 2.0 flash disk works properly with the card, and the WD disk works properly plugged into a USB 2.0 port, but the combination of the 3.0 disk and the 3.0 card is completely nonfunctional, even when using a small extension cable to cut off the superspeed connection.
Searching suggested that this is because of a bug which would prevent superspeed from working, but should -not- cause complete failure (highspeed fallback should be OK). I tried the suggested fix for this anyway, which was to install kernel 2.6.37-020637rc1 (was 2.6.35-24-generic). This did not help my problem nor did it correct that endpoint error message.

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

I suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?

I've used it once before but got fed up with the boot asking me everytime I turned my laptop on because I wasn't using it enough. I have Windows 7 on drive C . I want to keep it on drive C. I have several 1.5TB+ drives, and one of them is not being used. I want to dedicate it to Ubuntu, and be able to do a dual boot with my Windows 7 install. Is this possible? If it is, what about when this drive is not connected to my laptop? Will that mess up the boot process?

So, at the moment I have a 7TB LVM with 1 group and one logical volume. In all honesty I don't back up this information. It is filled with data that I can "afford" to lose, but... would rather not. How do LVMs fail? If I lose a 1.5TB drive that is part of the LVM does that mean at most I could lose 1.5TB of data? Or can files span more than one drive? if so, would it just be one file what would span two drives? or could there be many files that span multiple drives drives? Essentially. I'm just curious, in a general, in a high level sense about LVM safety. What are the risks that are involved?
Edit: what happens if I boot up the computer with a drive missing from the lvm? Is there a first primary drive?

I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives. When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions. Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.

I have an email server that I think is about to have a hard drive fail. It is running an old install of Redhat 9.0 I think. It has 2 120gb hard drives mirrored as a raid1. I want to copy those to a new pair of 500gb hard drives again as the same disk raid1 mirror. What tool would work for this? DD or partimage? Would it all be exactly the same and boot up still?
