Ubuntu :: World Book Network Drive Not Recognized ?
Mar 30, 2011
So my World Book Network Drive stopped working all of a sudden and I decided to remove it from the enclosure and plug it in via USB. I can see it in Disk Utility, I took a snapshot of it and attached it here. Normally when I plug a hard disk into ubuntu you can see it in places, not the case with this one. I would like to try and retrieve the data from it?

I am using Ubunto 10-04 LTS and trying to connect to Western Digital (World Book) network drive. By signing into Mionet I am able to reach this drive on my network and remotely. Trying to run the executable resulted in the following error:
"The file '/media/Disc 1 290909/WDAnywhereAccess_3_6_0.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit."

My Western Digital My Book World Edition II enclosure failed recently and as normal, WD support sucks. A friend told me he salvaged his by looking at the individual disks with Linux. How can I recover the disks, which seem to be fine.I can put them into an enclosure that supports JBOD and Raid 1 and it will see the drives when hooked up to a Windows XP system. It does not see anything on the drives but it knows they are there. I have a copy of some data recovery software Easus Data Recovery Wizard and it finds loads of data on the drives but recovery, according to the timer, will take weeks.How can I make Ubuntu see each drive and mount it?

I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition external harddisk with blue rings. I filled it up and now want to delete the data and start over. I'm set in my ways and have been accustom to reformatting harddisks periodically (sector maintainance, etc.) It's worked for me as I've luckily have not had a disk crash in 25 years.My webapp is not helping me with the reformat and neither is Western Digital tech support. I've heard that it was factory formatted with something called Linux ext3. Does this make sense? Has anyone had any experience with reformatting external harddisks being used as a NAS (home use).

Can I mount a WD My Book World Edition NAS in Ubuntu 11 without extensive terminal work? The NAS has a static ip, it can be ping'd from Ubuntu, and my Windows machines access it just fine, no passwords required.I have not been able to find a way to make this work. Nothing against the terminal per se, it's just still a little too unfamiliar and I keep hitting error road blocks on this one.

I had an old windoz 2003 server running a few recreational web sites. I've grown tired of all the hacking attempts, FTP floods, etc. Ok.. I've grown tired of windoz period.When I set the server up, I had the operating system on one physical drive and stored all of the web files on a separate physical drive just in case I ever wanted to make some changes to the operating system.in my adventurous ways, I've dumped windoz and installed ubuntu 11, 32 bit server edition on this machine. It is running fine from what I see on the server side. The first problem I've noticed is when even attempting to navigate to localhost through the server's web browser, I get a permissions issue.
So... off to the drive where the httpd.conf file points to. This is the second physical drive. When checking permissions and attempting to change them to the correct ones for the folder, I can't change them. I've tried through the GUI and the terminal as root. Neither way will change the permissions.I've stepped back and checked the permissions on the physical drive the files are stored on. I am having the same issues with the drive itself. How in the world can I change the permissions either on the drive or the folder? Is there something I should do as far as the drive's mounting?

I installed Fedora 12 from the Live CD and all is going well. Using most of the defaults, including Gnome.I can't see my WD MyBook World on the network. It came with software for Mac and Win, but for Linux, they just say contact your Linux Provider.

I have run into a problem using FreeNX in combination with public key authentication. I have Googled myself silly, but I can't find the exact answer to my problem. I am hoping that someone here will know the answer. First, let me tell you what I am trying to accomplish:
- I don't want my ssh server exposed to the Internet with password logins enabled. I only want public key authentication.
- I want to have access to NX server from anywhere in the world.
- I want NX to use a custom keypair, not the default supplied by FreeNX.
My environment:
openSUSE 11.2 (client and server)
KDE 4.3.4 (client and server)
FreeNX-0.7.2-26.5.i586 (server)
openssh-5.2p1-9.1.i586 (client and server)
NX Client for Linux 3.4.0-5 from NoMachine (client)
qtNX Client qtnx-0.0.1SVNr281-215.1.i586 (client)
The login problem persists, whether I am connected to the same network or to another network. Since ssh logins work, I don't think a firewall is the culprit. What do I have working so far: - The ssh server on the remote host only accepts public key authentication and I can login from the client without problems. So far so good. - FreeNX is installed on the remote host, using a custom keypair.
Authentication with this key works. I can login from the client with the nx user and the public key.

I can't seem to set this older server right to deny outside access while I build a website on it. What I am trying to accomplish is deny anyone outside of my network access to the website, but replace the 403 error with a temp page letting them know it is coming soon. I have googled for hours and everything I have tried just denies me as well. Seems to be all or nothing.
My last attempt was:
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.mydomain.com
ServerAlias mydomain.com
ServerAdmin me@mydomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/me/www/site
ErrorDocument 403 /temp.htm
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks -Indexes Multiviews
AllowOverride None
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from 192.168.0.*
Deny from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

I am just trying to get SSH working between 2 local machines on OpensSuse 11.4 boxes. I have the SSHD daemon running, the firewall is configured to allow SSH to pass, and I am using SSH's password authentication. However, my machines cannot see each other. Anytime I try to SSH, I get "Could not resolve hostname<hostname>: Name or service not known."
Of course, that leads me to believe I need an entry in my /etc/hosts file. However, I use DHCP, and therefore have a dynamic IP address. Therefore, my hosts names will only be good until the next IP renewal. How in the world do I configure SSH with a DHCP assigned address?

I work for a small retail company which until recently consisted of just one location. This month, we will open two new stores.I have been given the task of setting up a VPN network between the three locations and maintaining it.This network will consist of a main data server on the original location which has four client computers.The second location (another part of town) will have three clients, and the third location will have one client, all connected to the main data server (Retail POS system.) This will be a hardware VPN, with the main data server and all of the client computers running Windows XP.I have been working with the telecom company that is installing the phone system and is providing the routers at each location for the VPN.
I realize that since these are all Windows based machines it is not a Linux question, but I know that many of the experts here maintain Windows machines as well in their work. I am not an IT professional (I am a gemologist), but because I have been a Linux user for most of the last ten years, my boss seems to think I could handle this task so rather than contract this work out, he has asked me to do this. I truly enjoy this type of work, but I am concerned that my lack of knowledge is going to catch up with me, even though I do have a fairly good basic knowledge of Linux networking.
My question is simply this: Can anyone here recommend a good book or online training course which will give me the knowledge I need to maintain this system and trouble shoot it? I have searched online and there are literally hundreds of such books and it is like wading through a swamp. With such a small network, I am sure I can learn what I need, but if someone can recommend a good training/reference book that you have personal knowledge of, I would appreciate the recommendation.

my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

Just installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?
One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.03 on an ASUS P5VD2-X. There are numerous HDD attached, but one is uniquely Win XP, the other uniquely Ubuntu. Boot choice is via a GRUB loader. Ubuntu is the first choice normally. The problem is that more often than not, the system does not seem to be able to recognise the CD or DVD reader/writer. On some random occasions, they are recognised, but mostly not. But - and here is the upsetting bit - this problem never occurs when I boot up on Win XP. The CD/DVD devices are instantly and reliably recognised each and every time. So I guess that rules out a hardware or BIOS problem. This is a particularly annoying problem as use of the optical drives is required frequently, and it galls me having to revert to Windows just to use them.

I have just loaded Suse 11.4 and have had (2) problems, 1st: When I installed some additional programs, such as, Scribus, the system showed them as installed but they did not show up in the "applications" menu any where. I finally tracked them down and edited them in and they work fine - Why aren't they being automatically placed into the menu system? 2nd: I have a home network setup and all systems can see and work with each other, however, the host system is not shown as if it did not exist at all. for example; if I go to "network services" and select "Samba Shares" if other computers are connected it will show them but not the host - if no other computers are connected it shows nothing. On my 11.3 system it shows the host eg; "Linux-12fx blah blah" this is of course my host machine. I have replicated all of my settings on the 11.3 settings on my 11.4 system - no luck!

I have a 2nd hard drive (500 GB) that I keep my media on. When I tried to access it, it wasn't showing up in places or even places > computer. I used system > administration > disk utility. On the left hand side it shows the drive listed with the type and model number. Right under that it shows 500 GB Hard Drive unrecognized unknown or unused. If possible I would like to recover the media on this drive. I had setup this drive as ext3 and had it mount /media/sdb1. I can go to /media/sdb1 in the file browser but nothing is there.

I had windows 7 installed on my machine and decided to go with a ubuntu win7 dual boot. The install went fine, but Ubuntu doesn't see my second HDD as anything but empty. My second HDD I set up in win7. It is actually two 320GB HDD striped together. It is holding alot of data that I would like to be able to access from both win7 and ubuntu.
When I run fdisk -l in the terminal I get:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xf1c572ca .....
So Ubuntu sees the two HDD, just not as one with all my data on it like I see it in windows. Is there a way to set it up so I can use that second HDD (the two stripped) in both win7 and Ubuntu?

rEFIt can not see my USB thumb drive during boot, therefore can't install. Tried using the dd utility to copy the Ubuntu ISO to a spare partition on my internal hard drive. Now, rEFIt sees that drive but attempting to boot into it gives me a 'Missing Operating System' message. So I'm back at trying to get the system to boot from the pendrive.

I recently did a fresh Maverick install on my old Medion laptop (MD 42200), and a problem occurred.
The problem is that the CDROM-drive is not recognized by Ubuntu. There is no icon on the desktop when I insert a disc, and I can̈́'t find it in either /media, /cdrom or /dev.
I can see it in the standard Disc Tool program, where it is listed as being located in /dev/sr0, and it is visible in a downloaded Device Manager.
What can I do to access my CDs?

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.
