Ubuntu Networking :: Gvfs-mount Doesn't Work Through Ssh?
Jan 26, 2010
setup consist of three machines: 2 servers (A and B)(ubuntu) and my local laptop Server A is a company controlled server which holds project data Server B is our office local server, which we use for development purposes. The problem occurs when i ssh from my local laptop to server B. After loggin in, i execute a script to transfer data from A to B. This script mounts server A using gvfs-mount. It fails to mount completely and gives me the following error
Code:
Error mounting location: volume doesn't implement mount
However if i log onto server B, using the servers keyboard and monitor (using a gnome session) i can execute the line. To verify that it's something related to the ssh login, i tried the following: (My local laptop is also running ubuntu) from laptop open a terminal. See the gvfs mount work as expected. open another terminal and ssh localhost tried to execute gvfs-mount from the local ssh session and i get the above mentioned error. After googling a bit, i found that it might related to dbus (which i know _nothing_ about) and i tried
Code:
dbus-launch gvfs-mount and then tried to gvfs-mount server A, but it fails again.

I have the gvfs-fuse package installed, and if I understand it correctly it should make GVFS mounts appear in ~/.gvfs.
However it doesn't, when I mount something with GVFS (e.g. my Canon digital camera using PTP), I can only access the files from Nautilus, not from command line.
I have a ~/.gvfs directory, but it remains empty.

I have a samba based domain controller which has a share with limited privileges for different usernames. When I log in the gvfs wizard in ubuntu everything is all good and I can access all the files I am supposed to be able to.
I suspect it has to do with the owner and group of the directory not being a user in the local machine. When mounted via gvfs the owner and group are the local user and group whereas when mounted via the mount command the user and group are foreign uids and gids.I had thought that gvfs would have relied on mount() system call under the bonnet but is this not the case as gvfs mounts don't appear in the list when you type 'mount'.Can this be solved in the standard smbfs mount or is gvfs simply a better implementation that does some magic behind the scenes to set the owner and groups in accordance with the smb protocol?

I installed 10.10 yesterday and all seemed fine. Now I made an NFS mount in /etc/fstab like I use to in 10.04

In /mnt, /etc/hosts everything is set as should be. In other posts I'm reading other problems with nfs as well. Is there a bug?

I installed ifuse (a utility to mount your iPhone or iPod touch via the USB cable) and I want this to be the default way my iPhone is mounted when I connect it. Currently, when I connect it, it gets mounted by the gvfs (Gnome virtual file system) at ~/.gvfs/iPhone. Either one change should be made (the 'default command to execute when this device is connected') or two changes (tell gvfs not to mount, and tell ifuse to automount). I don't know how I can get this to work.

-Lucid Lynx
-Likewise-open to connect to an AD
-add all network shares to the nautilus favourite places
-our script is working fine if you are running the script manually from an opened session
-it's not working when placed in /etc/profile.d
What the script is doing:
-reading the .bat script name from the AD using the user login
-mounting the netlogon share
-reading the content of the netlogon script
-finding the network share names and adding them to the nautilus favourite places
What is failing: it does not mount the netlogon share using gvfs-mount Maybe because it's run too early in the process? note that a new user may log in any time, and we want this to be entirely automatic. So we cannot put the script in /home/login/*, as the home is not created yet at first login.

When I use nautilus open my home directory, everything is OK except that the file contents in the home directory are not presented. It seems that nautilus is still waiting and busy.
After that, I try to enter the user's home directory by the Terminal and succeed. I can use 'ls' to display the file in the home directory, But when I use 'ls -a' to print the hiden files, again the Terminal seem to be lock. the 'ls -a' is locked, I fail to 'kill' it.
At last, I find that everything that connects to the behavior which need to enter, delete or just dsplay the /home/$USER/.gvfs will fail and lock, and without any error message.

On my debian jessie "testing" I have set in fstab some line to mount folder located on my pc server...
When pc boot up the error is
Code:
Select allFailed to mount /mnt/Web
See 'systemctl status mnt-web.mount' for details...
CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
Then, after logging in, if I run mount -a all works correctly...
Maybe error was LAN that is not started? In this case how to resolve?

I have a hard time mounting two external drives on my Suse 11.3. When I use the device notifier gadget both drives get mounted in /media/<drive name>, the vfat drive is read-only though. However, I would like to mount both drives under /<drive name> in separate directories and rw. I looked at the devices in /dev/ and entered the device name to fstab, set the mount point, file system (vfat, and ntfs-3g) and set 'rw,noauto, exec, user, sync 0 0'.
This way I could mount my vfat drive read-only under /<drive name>, but not the ntfs one. After a reboot i noticed that the external drives get different IDs in /dev. E.g. what I had in my fstab under /dev/sdc1 got /dev/sdf1, and /dev/sdc was unknown. I am doing something wrong here, what worked in 11.0 does not seem to work here.

Using Fedore 12 I am trying to mount on a server with the following command: # mount -t cifs //samba-pool-suse/pool-suse /mnt -o user=xxxx I was waiting that the system askme the user password and thats all, but the answer is: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //samba-pool-suse/pool-suse, missing codepage or helper program, or other error (for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so using:# dmesg | tail returs: CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -22

Hi Linux Forum People! This is my first post. Somehow I'm not able to mount directories from other machine using autofs. Autofs maps successfully loaded into NIS client, but autofs does not recognize them. Please see belowI'm running RHEL4
[root@linux2 etc]# ypcat -k auto.master
/hs /etc/auto.hs
/home /etc/auto.home

I have the following problem: There are three NFS mounts in /etc/fstab, which are automatically mounted. The network connection runs over NetworkManager. Since NWM brings up the network asynchronously, NFS doesn't mount correctly on the first try, but is loaded soon enough since mount automatically retries until it works.
I can live with the fact that I have an error in my boot messages, since everything is up in time for the user. But, I need a (selfmade) upstart script which depends on the NFS mount being up. Even using "remote-filesystems" as the trigger doesn't help, because the trigger is apparently sent after the first failed try (I checked with cat /proc/mounts in my script, the nfs mounts are clearly not up.) Can I somehow force the remote mounts to wait until NWM is up, or make the NFS mount emit an event when the mounts really get mounted?

I have a bunch of nfs mounts from my MythTV backend to my netbook, both running 9.10. Due to the lousy Atheros wireless driver, it typically loses connection at least every half hour. The nfs mounts are mounted soft, intr, so programs should get an error trying to talk to a server they can't contact, and the request should be interruptable. Instead, they just lock up, can't be interrupted, and the netbook can't even shut down after the network failure because it hangs trying to clean up before shutting down.
So do these nfs options actually work in Ubuntu? 'mount' shows the nfs directory mounted with the correct options, so it doesn't seem to be any kind of configuration problem... it just doesn't do what I'm telling it to do.

I have recently installed ubuntu 10.04. After some days of trying I can say that ekiga doesn't work with 10.04. With the same computer I was perfectly able to use ekiga with ubuntu 8.1, the 10.04 gives me connections problems.... it simply say says "Could not register (Failed)".I'm trying to connect with my voip provider (12voip.com) but it seems that I can't. I have even tried other programs like empathy, Twinkle, QuteCom but with none of them I can connect with my voIP provider. I think there are some connection problems but I really don't know how to face them. We have to configure router in 10.04 for sip connection? Actually I can't phone at all.

I've tried to use netcat in the past and assumed it was my stupidity that was preventing it from working... but this is getting ridiculous. I'll execute nc -l 3333 on a server at 192.168.0.105 (after opening it on the firewall of course) then I run nc 192.168.0.105 3333 on my laptop (from 192.168.0.101). and nothing happens... i start typing and nothing comes up on the terminal.
I run nc -z 192.168.0.105 80 which should ideally do a port scan of port 80 on that server (of which I'm running a web server that clearly works) but it doesnt even give me any feedback. Nothing happens. Now when I use the verbose flag i see that I am indeed connecting to the specified port on the server successfully (so the port scan one is a success but only with the verbose flag... which shouldnt be the case I believe). But still once I have the server listening and the laptop connected... I type in both windows and nothing happens...

I am networked to a Windows machine. I can see and open files across the network. I can see and add my HP 6000 printer (it is on the Windows machine). On my Ubuntu machine this printer has a check mark by "Enabled" and "shared" but I cannot set it as default (that option is ghosted) and when I try to print a test page it says "unable to connect to CIFS host" I downloaded the HP Linux setup program. That program cannot locate the networked printer at all.

i have had my bluetooth keyboard and mouse working fine for a little while now, then one day.. seemingly out of the blue (no pun intended) it stopped. heres what i deduced:
Mouse works fine, always keyboard doesnt.
I'm using a logitech dinovo edge
and i can manually force the keyboard to connect by putting the keyboard into discoverable mode (press the button on the back of it) and using hidd:
Code:
hidd --connect XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
but who the heck wants to do that on every reboot or resume from sleep! yikes..
firstly, i noticed that bluetoothd was segfaulting alot:
Code:
ec 22 17:26:09 hostname kernel: [21329.811149] usb 2-6.2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 6

i've installed it on my parents old computer, mostly for downloading. But wired internet did work all the time but then i had to reset our router because of some problems and now it doesn't work anymore! But the strange thing is, if i put the cable on my own laptop with windows on it, then it works as normal.
So i guess its some kind of DNS problem, but i'm very new with ubuntu and also not so good with computers. Our network is simple just an modem connected to an router: Sitecome WL-341.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. When I restarted, I admired the new login menu, then went to Firefox. I noticed that my wireless didn't work (it did in 9.04) Thinking I'd just need to reinstall the drivers, I plugged in the computer to a working Ethernet outlet with a working cord. I noticed that Ubuntu didn't tell me that Auto eth0 was connected. It didn't tell me anything. And then I went to Google and realized that the wired connection didn't work either. Then I came here on an iPod Touch and you know the rest.
Edit: And other devices work too on the network.

I have a desktop pc with xubuntu 9.10 32bit installed. I don't have direct access to this machine, but they told me that internet is not working (firefox, synaptic,etc...), but only skype works! If they reboot on windows, everything works well, so it's not a matter of connection or dns. It's very important because they work with that computer. How can i solve the problem? and what could be the cause of this strange anomaly
