Ubuntu Networking :: Multifunction Printers In The Networked World?

Jan 23, 2010

So having recently set up my server (including some disk space and ushare, and an additional laserjet printer) I was wondering if anyone had any experience of putting a multifunction printer into an ubuntu server and adding it locally (to the server) then to the networked computers....I know this printer works perfectly (the scan too!) when plugged directly into a machine's USB....I suppose my real question is....does anyone know anything about the scanner side of it?? is this going to work?? I reckon the printer side will (/should - i know the printer works and i know the server can share printers.....lol) but the scanner side is relatively new (when put into the context of shared from my HS.Please note:My server is just running vanilla (plain) ubuntu 9.10....and my compo's are 10.04 and 9.10....ubuntu ONLY network...

Fedora :: Slow Printing Through Networked Printers Running FC11

Dec 23, 2009

I have recently replaced an older server with a new Intel Xeon quad-core processor. The old machine was running FC6, the new machine is running FC11 64Bit. The problem that I am having is that printing to networked printers prints 2-3 pages, then waits 8-10 seconds and then prints 2-3 more pages. This repeats until the printout is completed. My first thought is that FC11 (or somewhere between FC6 and FC11) introduced some way to limit activity to devices? The confusing thing to me is that I went from a single CPU to a quad core machine, increased the memory from 1Gb to 3Gb, moved from a 32 bit machine to a 64 bit machine and I am running the same applications... they just run slower now...

Ubuntu Networking :: Scanning Over Lpd-network And A RX500 Multifunction Device?

May 3, 2011

I have made an EPSON RX500 multifunction device (printer/scanner) available over my router with the lpd protocol. Both PCs (ubuntu 10.04 laptop wireless, 8.10 desktop wired) connected to it can print, but not scan, since XSANE does not recognize the scanner over the network. It does hoverer both, scanning and printing, if connected with an USB cable. How can i configure xsane to recognize my RX500 over the network?

Ubuntu :: Autodetection Of Network Printers Makes All Printers Disappear?

Jan 28, 2010

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.

However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.

Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

Ubuntu :: Printers Do Not Save In 'Shared Printers' Group?

Oct 9, 2010

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

Setting up scripts to execute at a certain time is not gonna help, as the online time wont be the same all the time. Ubuntu Networking :: Monitoring Networked Computers Bandwidth Usage?

Mar 25, 2011

Back in school I remember using an application that would identify active IP addresses on a network, and basically show you a log of activity. We actually monitored another lab and went in and showed them what we saw (all the machines had IP addresses on the monitors.) We could see websites, bandwidth, etc.

I'm trying to find an application that would do this again. I've been trying to monitor my networks to see what machines are performing unauthorized operations. ISP is showing high bandwidth usage and there is no way checking email and browsing is using this amount, 200GB a month! Something is going on here.

Ubuntu Networking :: Kubuntu Can't Set Up Any Network Printers

Feb 15, 2010

I've had Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit running on my laptop since it came out, but in the past month all its networked printers have disappeared from the configuration, and I can't set up any more. I've been through the forums again and again and cannot fix it. I've installed and reinstalled lots of packages related to CUPS but it doesn't seem to make a difference.I'm not sure what has happened, but I have lots of clues. Since I'm reaching the limit of my know-how here, I'll just list all the clues.

I'm pretty sure the problem is in my Kubuntu laptop, because in my SOHO setup I also have a Kubuntu 9.10 desktop (this time 64 bit) connected to a printer, and I have successfully printed through that from both a Windows XP laptop and a Xubuntu 9.10 box.On the Xubuntu 9.10 box, I just asked for the GUI print configurator and it automatically detected the network printer. No muss no fuss. But on the Kubuntu laptop, when I go into the print configurator, here's what happens:

- it shows two options, "new printer" and "server settings" (image a.png)
- entering "server settings" everything is greyed out and unchangeable (image b.png)
- entering "new printer" shows only one option for a connection, "other" (image c.png)
- after entering the address of a printer i know works (image d.png) the configurator has detected the printer (image e.png)
- but then attempting to move forward it crashes with no explanation.

Running the non-kubuntu version of the configurator GUI provides a bit more information before it fails. When I try to access the desktop with the printer attached it wants a username and password. (which wasn't necessary for the two client machines who successfully printed.) And at the end of the process there is an error: "there was an error during the CUPS operation: client-error-forbidden".

Two more clues:
- when I try to go with my browser to localhost:631 the browser can't establish a connection
- but I can see the cups page on the printer's host machine at 192.168.0.104:631 no problem.

Networking :: Server Connection To Outside World?

Sep 17, 2010

Got a few servers runnning and they all connect fine to the net. Each are running with a static IP provided by my ISP. But I have one server were I re-installed Debian Lenny - or tried to. At the stage were it wants to connect to a mirror it cannot due to network problems. I tried a new install leaving it behind a router. This solved the problem and it connected. Tried once more directly connected to a static IP and same problem happened - it got to the point with the mirror. Tried changing the settings after the installation through the router. This is what I get from ifconfig :

[Code]...

If I ping it from one of my other servers it shows as OK and can also ping my other servers from the server in question, but if I ping google.com it times out (fails). The IP 92.62.196.77 is in the range that I can use. Checked that with my ISP. Just to make sure I tried disconnecting one of the servers that I have working and changed the server in question settings and still it came out with the same problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Discovering Network Printers And Configuring Routes

2. My routing table:

3. The network printer's details [as read from the printer's display interface]:

My question:

This printer can be discovered by windoze machines using "Find printers" and then added. [Am not sure how this works!]

But when I try to discover the same from my ubuntu machine, its not getting discovered. Tried pinging the ip [172.20.254.158] which gives the following:

Now I tried fiddling around with the route command along with good amount of googling but to no avail.

1. Is there a way I could add that printer to my machine?

2. If yes, how could I? Does it involve adding routes?
