I was fine to get on the internet when it had Vista on it, but now the wifi light is always 'on' no matter what I do, yet Ubuntu can't even acknowledge it HAS wifi, let alone connects. I'm at a total loss here, and I need this up and running.
I've found a lot of people with similar issues, but none of those solutions has helped. My Ubuntu 'fails' packages all the time (tells me they don't exist!) and I don't know what to do with it. I'm a Windows user (born and raised) and speaking Ubuntu is not coming naturally to me.

After running a system update, on next boot I was unable to connect to the internet. I am running Fedora 12 KDE 4.4 x86_64 with a dsl connection. Network manager was keeping my ethernet card disabled. If I disabled NM control of the card I could manually enable it and connect to the internet, but on reboot it would be disabled again. I saw that the update did apply to NetworkManager so I did a downgrade. yum downgrade NetworkManager That seems to have fixed the problem.
Here's an interesting thing I noticed. When I did the downgrade, yum wanted to "Install" for dep NetworkManager-glib for the lower version, however didn't do anything to the same file on the latest version. Almost as if it wasn't installed. Now, with the downgraded version as current, yum wants to update both NetworkManager and NetworkManager-glib to the latest version. I couldn't swear to it, but I think the original update to NetworkManager did not include the *-glib dep, but now it does. Maybe that was the problem all along?

i have a problem connecting to the internet at home, but have no problem connecting to the internet in other places. My computer connect ot the router but does not receive aconnection to the internet form the router. this happens both wireless and ethernet. at the same time everybody elses computers (using windows) connect to the internet in my home. i have tried switching between two wireless cards, had the same problem. this makes me think it has something to do with the router itself. i use a Planet WRT-413 router.

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and Linux OS in general, hope this hasn't already been solved but after trying for 24hrs+ I think it may be time for me to start my own thread (sorry if there is already one). I have been desperately trying to get my Broadcom BCM4312 wireless card to work and after searching about 100 sites and threads I still can't get it going Here are some of the problems Ive been having(I am running Ubuntu 8.04 by the way):
1. Tried installing "Broadcom STA Wireless Driver" under System->Administration->hardware drivers but after install it didn't show any signs of working.
2. I tried getting the Linux driver off the website [URL]... and followed the instructions in the readme to the letter, yet when i am asked to type in one of the final commands: # sudo insmod wl.ko
I get the output: # error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 File exists I have also looked at this website where a guy posts the same problem but no one posted anything back: [URL]...

I just installed Ubunto 9.10 on my HP Pavilion ZE9400 laptop (more specifically a ze4930us) that was formerly running Windoze XP. Right now, I'm using my Win 7 desktop machine. The problem with the laptop is that Linux can't connect to my wireless network. It seems that it can't see the wireless card. When I tap the button on the laptop case, a little blue light normally switches on and off to indicate whether the wireless card is enabled or not, but that light doesn't come on. I suppose I need a HP/Ubuntu driver. Any advice, links, etc?
BTW, I also went to the HP site to download a driver, but Linux isn't one of the OSs that they support and have no drivers.

I have just installed Maverick meekat on my new laptop with Wubi, and I have been trying to setup my wireless connection, but i couldnt. The first thing I tried was going to System>Prefrences>network connections, and clicking on the wireless tab. I tried to add a network think manyally, and I miserably failed.
here is the information I have of my laptop as of now after doing the lspci command in the terminal:
Network controller: Brodcom Corporation Device 4727
USB Controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset USB2 Enhanced Host Controller Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
Also I have read somethings about ndis or using the windows driver and things of that sort. Whenever I am using windows, my wireless connection is working perfectly. So I dont know if there is a specific way to activate my drivers, or if my computer is just not capable of having wireless connection on Ubuntu.

Lately, my internet connection stops for several minutes and then re-connects. Since there are few issues to debug here (router, modem, ADSL, internet provider), I would like first to measure the failure rate. Is there a utility or script that will do the following: Wake every 1-2 minutes, verify a certain web page is available (doesn't matter which). If it fails: dump a line to a log file and get back to sleep. If OK - get back to sleep. Is there such a utility?

This laptop arrived in the post yesterday and everything on f15 works out of the box except wireless.Digging out an old ethernet cable I was finally able to get wireless working by doing the following: First install ndiswrapper. We'll be using rpmfusion for this so you'll need to
[Code]...
After a reboot it all loaded and worked fine, just remember to make sure the little light on the f12 button is blue, not red. This guide should work for other laptops and other distros as well (though obviously you'll likely need a different driver file to start off with).

My wireless LAN connection on this machine occasionally stops working. The network traffic bar shows periodic very small transmissions but the failure of all network dependent applications (Firefox, package manager, etc.) indicates to me that the machine is no longer talking to the net. I can fix it by reselecting my home network in nm-applet from the drop-down list. This causes the machine to disconect, reconnect and all is well for some random period of time thereafter. Here's some data:I'm running an HP Pavillion laptop.
Code:
~$ lspci | grep Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
Code:
~$ lsmod | grep iwl

I don't know if this is related or not, but a couple of months ago I unsuccessfully attempted to share a hotel's wired Internet connection over my wireless card. I may have hosed some settings or it could be unrelated. The "unknown interface" portion of the restart attempt is interesting but I don't know enough to fix it.

For some reason, ubuntu cannot find local wireless networks. In fact, the Broadcom wireless card Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n seems to be incompatible with ubuntu. I've tried numerous 'solutions' on the Internet, but none of them seem to work on my computer. Tutorials I've visited have recommended downloading the b43 drivers from the Synaptic package manager and also the bcmwl-kernal-source package. Nevertheless, the wireless never turns on and Additional Drivers never shows anything at all. After several exasperating hours of trying to get my wireless running I've decided to turn to the forum for help. I'm sure there's probably more information I should supply, but I'm honestly not sure what that would be.

After deleting part of the gnome config directories in order to reset gnome (GUI was messed up - No title bars, etc). I lost my bluetooth tethering to my Nokia N900. I cannot redo it as it always fails. Linking from phone to Laptop works, but cannot use it to link up to the internet then. Cable to the phone always worked up till now. Now I cannot get a connection as it stopped working after my upgrade to 11.04.

I have tested it in windows and confirmed that the problem does not lay in the firewall and is just in ubuntu.
Simply what happens is I can connect, or rather network manager tells me im connected. If I leave it for approx 30 seconds it will fail.
If I open terminal services client it will allow me to connect to the server and even get passed the login screen but will just simply fail and the TSC program will crash.
below are a list of forums and fixes I have attempted. I am beginning to think that the open VPN program supplied with ubuntu is completely inadiquate (based on the number of other people with problems) and I cannot see why ubuntu comes shipped with it on CD when it clearly undermines the good work they have done to produce the rest of the OS.
[URL]
Anyway, I have tried using MPPE, refuse-eap = yes
I have tried changing EVERY single option available in the VPN properties and restarting the network after each one.
As an alternative are there any other network managers available for ubuntu 10 that anyone can recommend to avoid using the standard one?

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.
----
EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.
-----
EDIT 2:
found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty
seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.

I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only
