Ubuntu Networking :: HP HP Pavilion G6 - No Wireless With Freshly Installed 11.04
Aug 14, 2011
Installed 11.04 (64bit) on my HP Pavilion G6, in place of windows. ethernet works, however i cannot connect wirelessly. i have done much Google searching but to no avail.
I'm trying to get wireless access on a laptop with freshly installed Fedora 14 32-bit, but I'm having some issues. I ran the diagnostics advised in this thread: [URL]..Here are the results:
For some reason, ubuntu cannot find local wireless networks. In fact, the Broadcom wireless card Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n seems to be incompatible with ubuntu. I've tried numerous 'solutions' on the Internet, but none of them seem to work on my computer. Tutorials I've visited have recommended downloading the b43 drivers from the Synaptic package manager and also the bcmwl-kernal-source package. Nevertheless, the wireless never turns on and Additional Drivers never shows anything at all. After several exasperating hours of trying to get my wireless running I've decided to turn to the forum for help. I'm sure there's probably more information I should supply, but I'm honestly not sure what that would be.
I am running a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Gateway Computer with a 2 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. My video driver is an integrated Intel variety. I went to Salimane Adjao Moustapha's website: [URL] and copied and pasted all of his post-installation commands into my terminal to run them. Not sure if this guy knows what he is doing or not. He seems very intelligent and has a lot of good feedback on the site.
Basically he seems to be upgrading/updating everything and adding apps for Video, Music, Utilities, Antivirus/Firewall, Open Office, GIMP etc. Somehow my screen freezes up on a regular basis. I can't mouse click on anything and CTRL+ALT+F2 doesn't bring up an instance of my terminal so I can't kill the offending process. It also freezes up sometimes when I first power it up. In any event, my only recourse is to pull the plug on my computer and reboot.
I just freshly installed Fedora 12 on my PC from a live CD. After finding the update button, It says I have 451 updates. When I go to update all of them a few seconds into the update I get a error message and it says this below. " could not add package update for abrt-plugin-runapp-1.0.8-2.fc12(i686)updates: abrt-plugin-runapp-1.0.8-2.fc12.i686 "
I have a freshly installed Ubuntu Karmic 32 bits installed in an old machine (Pentium 4 512 Mb RAM) and I'm having a severe problem with apt-get. No matter what repository I choose, I can't update the repository files. I get the following error during a apt-get update:
Hit http://br.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/universe Sources Hit http://br.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/multiverse Packages Hit http://br.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/multiverse Sources 96% [4 Sources bzip2
I want to revert Suse 11.3 KDE to a freshly installed state. I mean, is there any way to remove any traces of software(s) which have been installed or updated along with any associated repositories.
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my HP Pavilion (dv7-3017). Problem is that I have no wireless connection. When pressing wireless button the light stays orange instead of turning blue. My paviion is using Atheros network card. I'm linux newbie so it would great if you could out solving this problem.
I just installed Ubunto 9.10 on my HP Pavilion ZE9400 laptop (more specifically a ze4930us) that was formerly running Windoze XP. Right now, I'm using my Win 7 desktop machine. The problem with the laptop is that Linux can't connect to my wireless network. It seems that it can't see the wireless card. When I tap the button on the laptop case, a little blue light normally switches on and off to indicate whether the wireless card is enabled or not, but that light doesn't come on. I suppose I need a HP/Ubuntu driver. Any advice, links, etc?
BTW, I also went to the HP site to download a driver, but Linux isn't one of the OSs that they support and have no drivers.
i have got an HP Pavilion g6-1142sl and i installed on it ubuntu 11.04. i have some problems with the wireless. i have already read a post on this forum wich explained how to get drivers here the link: [URL] i got them and the wireless started working (a month ago) now, a couple of days ago it stopped working when i did a restart due to an automatic update. and that is what i can see with terminal:
[Code]...
what can i do in order to have a working wireless? i am sorry if my english is not properly good but i am italian.
I had to resize the win partition, making a new partition for Ubuntu of about 15GB. I then installed the system. Everything went without problems. I was able to boot once, and verified that everything worked as intented.
However, after that, 90% of the times I reboot the bootup process hangs at a blank screen (with a blinking underscore), immediately after grub selection. If I select "recovery mode" in grub I can see the bootup messages, but the process hangs, all except one time, right after:
Code: [2.304418] ata2: DUMMY [2.304487] ata3: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m1024@0x58344000 port 0x58344200 irq28 [2.304584] ata4: DUMMY
and does nothing more. There are no error messages or hints to the source of the problem, to my eyes.I've noticed that sometimes even the loading screen of the live cd will hang indefinitely, leaving me no choice other than a hard-reboot.
The rare times that the system does boot normally, everything works normally. I've tried installing using both the ext4 and ext3 filesystems. I couldn't find anything like this on the forums. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need more details?
I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience. ---- EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working. ----- EDIT 2: found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.
i got a copy of CD1 from [URL]. And then, i noticed there was no gdm(X server) installed. Is it different from Lenny? It is possible to install X from the CD?
I have successfully installed Slackware 13.1 with the help of a brilliant guide and some reading on my own. And I am loving it. I have installed few applications and feel that the I understand the system more better than any other linuses I tried.
But, the initial fonts look quite out of focussed(can't find a word) or simply ugly?
I searched and found few threads and a dugan's blog but I got confused as to what to do exactly....How to make fonts beautiful or focussed?... This is my first query.....
Also, a second query is about updating the system...I installed Slackware 13.1 DVD without KDE( Yes I love xfce). As I see I used the "slackpkg" utility to update.
First, uncommented the # sign from one of the mirrors in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and ran slackpkg update
And the next time when I ran the same, it said "No changes in change log between last update and now". I gather it means my system is upto date but I have doubt about it. How do I conform if the system is upto date? Should I necessarily subscribe to the mailing list? It a thing I haven't done yet.
I have just installed Maverick meekat on my new laptop with Wubi, and I have been trying to setup my wireless connection, but i couldnt. The first thing I tried was going to System>Prefrences>network connections, and clicking on the wireless tab. I tried to add a network think manyally, and I miserably failed.
here is the information I have of my laptop as of now after doing the lspci command in the terminal:
Also I have read somethings about ndis or using the windows driver and things of that sort. Whenever I am using windows, my wireless connection is working perfectly. So I dont know if there is a specific way to activate my drivers, or if my computer is just not capable of having wireless connection on Ubuntu.

I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?
My wireless LAN connection on this machine occasionally stops working. The network traffic bar shows periodic very small transmissions but the failure of all network dependent applications (Firefox, package manager, etc.) indicates to me that the machine is no longer talking to the net. I can fix it by reselecting my home network in nm-applet from the drop-down list. This causes the machine to disconect, reconnect and all is well for some random period of time thereafter. Here's some data:I'm running an HP Pavillion laptop.
Code:
~$ lspci | grep Wireless 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
I don't know if this is related or not, but a couple of months ago I unsuccessfully attempted to share a hotel's wired Internet connection over my wireless card. I may have hosed some settings or it could be unrelated. The "unknown interface" portion of the restart attempt is interesting but I don't know enough to fix it.
today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85 C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90 and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).
I installed lucid lynx on my hp pavilion dm4 laptop, very happy with it. My wireless is not working though (I have ethernet working), I have looked for drivers for the Broadcom card that's supposed to pick it up, the light is orange. I have seen that many people have this problem, tried their solutions to no avail. I have ndiswrapper installed and have found some drivers that detect the hardware, still not getting wireless.

I decided to download Ubuntu 9.10. I am just having a problem finding a wireless network. When I click on the icon it does not show any network. It says device not ready under wireless network. Once again I have an HP pavilion dv2500 laptop.
I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 w/KDE interface on a HP Pavilion dv5-1010us laptop. Now we're trying to get the wireless to work. It's got a built-in wireless adapter, but we're not sure what kind of adapter it is. HP's Website is no help there. According to another site, it's an Intel WifiLink 5100. I did download the wireless driver from the HP site, but it's a .exe file. Anyone had any luck setting up this or a similar HP laptop. I couldn't find this model on the HCL/Laptops/HP - openSUSE page, but it seems OpenSUSE supports wireless other HP Pavilion models.
When I press the red LED touch button below the screen to turn it on, nothing happens. Also the LED that indicates that the wireless is on stays red and does not turn blue. I have dual boot on and tested it under Windows 7 where everything works fine, so I know the internal wireless card and touch key is working. Just not in OpenSuse. I am using the KDE plasma desktop.
I install 9.10 dual boot on a vista pc. Ubuntu appears to be running however it is not seeing wireless networks. I have the pc icon with an x. I tried help and was directed to Terminal where I thought I followed the instructions and ended up with information about my adapter displayed. When I run Vista I have all wireless networks listed and can connect. Ubuntu does not show any wireless networks available. I tired going back over the install but do not see that I missed anything. I get the sense that this may be something simple.
I've bought an RALINK getnet Wireless USB adapter and am trying to get it to work on a dual boot pc running XP and 9.10. According to the forums and the manufacturers website (www.getnet.com.tw), this should be supported in Linux.
Using the disk that came with it, I have gotten it to work in Windows. I've spent nearly a day scouring the Ubuntu forums and trying different things, but still haven't got it working in 9.10. (I think that most of my confusion is that many of the threads are for earlier versions)
If I type "iwconfig", I get this:
Code: graeme@graeme-desktop:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
[Code].....
I have the CD that has a LINUX directory, but am not sure what to do with it. Through other threads I have determined that my drivers are rt2870.sys and .inf and have downloaded these. I'm not really sure what to do with them next..... Many threads talk about going System>Administration>Networking, but I don't have this as an option. I have however got an option which I downloaded called "Windows Wireless Drivers" which seemed to let me load the rt2870.inf driver, but then says "No" after it (not very helpful).
I have enabled Wireless Networking, and added my SSID etc etc, but I still don't connect.
I have a MSI CX600 notebook with a :Ralink 802.11bgn 1T1R Mini Card Wireless Adapter (this name appears in WIndows 7)Can anybody tell me how to install it on Ubuntu 9.10,because I don't have internet connection.
I just downloaded ubuntu 11.04 and installed it and everything off of a cd and now I cant connect to internet wirelessly! My WiFi button on my laptop is orange and I press it and it doesn't go blue like it normally did when I had windows vista. I just updated my wireless driver off of ubuntu and restarted and nothing happened! its still not connecting me to the internet, I only have access through the ethernet I am using. I cant go ethernet, this is only temporary and I really want ubuntu, I really need it, but its not letting me go wireless. My wireless driver is this: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 02)
I bought a netbook and couldn't handle windows xp at all, so installed ubuntu 9.10, but the wireless network icon doesn't appear on the top of the screen like it should, presumably because ubuntu doesn't automatically recognize whatever card is in there. This is an asus 1001-HA. could anyone assist me with getting this thing up and running on a wireless network?
