I just finished installing Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. During installation Ubuntu was connected to the network and was downloading updates. After rebooting though, it cannot connect to the network.

Using 10.10 and have a wired connection that according to the system is connected, but when I open a browser I can't connect to any sites. What am I missing here? I can't for the life of me figure this out.

View 3 Replies View Relatedwhat is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop, dual-boot. Everything is working except the networking. It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy desktop PC has 2 NICs. I have Ubuntu on it since several years, and I remember that both eth0 and eth1 used to work. However, I discovered recently that currently only eth0 works, and eth1 is dead, but I don't know why. It's been a while since I've tried eth1, so I have no idea when exactly it broke. I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that the MAC address is incorrect: it is set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, which seems wrong. But I have no idea how this happened...Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix it? Here is some output which I think is useful:

Yesterday I moved my modem (wireless) to my living room so the PS3 detected a better signal. In doing so, I had to run a new ethernet cable from my living room where the modem is into my office where the computer is. I use ubuntu 9.10
For some reason I cannot connect to the internet now. When I scroll over the connection, it says wire connection 1 is active. I have my settings manually set. I did notice the MAC address field is blank...
I didn't have an issue before, but with changing cables and whatnot, something got messed up somehow.
I am unable to connect to any network, wired or wireless. Network-manager and wicd are both gone, as in no longer installed. Please don't tell me to apt-get anything. I have no network connection. I have tried downloading packages for nm onto a usb stick only to find myself in dependency hell which ended with the impassible error "Requires installation of untrusted packages".

cannot connect to my window computer using open SuSe
I am attempting to connect to my Windows Computer via a wired network on a sky router. When I tried with PClinuxOS it configured automatically. With the latest version of open SuSe 13.1this is quite a bit different. I have got as far as the network being auto and active with an Icon showing on the taskbar. However when I click on the Windows network Icon SuSe tyies to locate my Computer but then comes back with " failed to reteive share list from server. This is as far as I can get after several hours of trying.
I just upgraded to Fedora 13 (from 10, using preupgrade), and I've gotten most things working again, but I'm still having trouble with the network.My wired connection (eth0) doesn't connect on boot (even though ONBOOT=yes in /usr/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0).Because of that, I figured I'd just leave eth0 connected manually (with ifup eth0). However, I then found that if I try to connect to a VPN like this, the system reverts to the "stalling every time I try to connect to the internet" problem that I had earlier.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.
I have a Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I have use the STA drivers that Ubuntu recommends. I can connect quite easily just by clicking on the icon, so this is more than a niggle than a problem.
My network isn't protected as we live in the middle of nowhere (quite literally) and network theft isn't a problem. We also run a self-catering cottage, and let guests have free access to our network anyway, so it is easier for guests to access our network without me having to give them all the key. When I did use wpa, it would start itself up with the laptop, so I kind of know that this might be the cause. Is there any way I can fix it without encrypting the network?
recently I risked a look to the Linux world and I'm happy so far, but now I've got a Problem, I'm unable to solve by myself. I installed Mint (Julia) on my old Laptop to test Linux. The Laptop has a very old PCMCIA WLAN Card with a Realtek rtl8180 chipset. Everything seems to run perfectly so far with one exception: the WLAN doesn't find any Network to connect although the card and the driver seem to be installed correctly.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) and network manager doesn't seem to be able to use my modem to connect to the internet (set up wizard works, appears connected, but then I get page not found error). View 9 Replies View Relatedi'm experiencing some weird behaviour: I have a server running ubuntu 10.04 and two Apple laptops in my home network. Sometimes after booting up the server doesn't connect to the wireless network, but instead "kills" the connection of the laptops. (The network then isn't available for about two minutes - it's showing but it can't connect) On the server the network interface is up, but not associated.
Sometimes the interface isn't configured properly (iwconfig isn't showing an entry) - but in this case the behaviour obviously isn't showing. some information about my system:
Ubuntu Version: Server 10.04x64
Wireless Card: Netgear WG311v3 with marvell chipset
Driver: ndiswrapper+mrv8335x64
This is on Lucid, using a Dell Mini. I installed the required packages for a USB tether to my iPhone. Network Manager recognized it immediately as wwan0, but it doesn't connect. Also, it never asks me for the password to connect to the Personal Hotspot (as it does when I can connect from Windows).

Also the connection is wired one with modem only it's reliance broadband. The wire is connected between modem and pc but there is no blinking of light for this connection. The wan is active and wan's light is blinking and when I was on xp on same pc there was no such problem.
I have a new install of Ubuntu 10.04.2 and the network will not connect. This is a dual boot desktop system with Vista. The Vista network is good. I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 on it. I wanted to try out fluxbox, so I did a apt-get install fluxbox. When I went into fluxbox, I was having trouble getting connected to my network wirelessly. I installed Fedora 11 on my computer with the live cd. If I run the live cd, the network connection is active. But, after the installation the cannt connect with the wired network. I must use an internal Server to connect the www. The server controlls my mac address and if it correct, the server allow the connection. ipconfig and the network manager can read the correct mac address. Why it does not work

View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a switch, connected it to our router,and moved the patch cords to the switch. All but one of the workstations connect & work fine. If I plug the non-connecting wire into my laptop it connects. If I plug the non-connecting wire back into the router,the workstation connects.So...it seems that this particular workstation will only see the address of the old router. It's stuck in there & won't refresh. Two of the PC's & the laptop are running 10.04 (Mint 9 Actually), and one has Windows XP on it.e problem is with one of the 3 10.04 boxesI have tried removing the power cord & MB battery and leaving them out over night.Also cleared the bios. Same results. Connects fine to the old router but will not connect to the new switch.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of ubuntu studio 10.04 and I can not connect to either a wired or wireless network. The In Network Tools the IPv4 IP address is 127.0.0.1. It is plugged into a network giving out DHCP IP's. Both wired and wireless were working on ubuntu 9. I have tried to bring eth0 up in the terminal but it did not give an error or anything. It it running on a Dell Latitude D820 laptop.
