I am unable to connect to any network, wired or wireless. Network-manager and wicd are both gone, as in no longer installed. Please don't tell me to apt-get anything. I have no network connection. I have tried downloading packages for nm onto a usb stick only to find myself in dependency hell which ended with the impassible error "Requires installation of untrusted packages".
View 6 RepliesI've just installed 11.04 Natty on an old Laptop (Dell Lattitude C400) and am unable to connect to my home network (wired LAN connection, no wireless). The laptop previously had WinXP installed and was able to connect (I have also double checked the cables and ports and they're all functioning ok).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop, dual-boot. Everything is working except the networking. It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 on it. I wanted to try out fluxbox, so I did a apt-get install fluxbox. When I went into fluxbox, I was having trouble getting connected to my network wirelessly. I am using Belkin router and i connect with MAC ID only. When i connect with my Vista it works properly but when i reboot and try to connect with Ubuntu it's not connecting.
I looked for my Ubuntu mac id and i added that also but no use. It says it's connected and when i try to google it, the page not found

- first time i tried to connect i had static ip settled on my router so I tried to configure Network manager from GUI. I couldn't connect; it kept trying to connect forever. so I completely removed from terminal NM (using guides on internet) e installed wicd: same problem. Tried to configure manually network/interfaces file. Didn't work. Reset router and set dhcp . Tried everything again first with NM and then wicd. Didn't solve. Tried pinguy os, zorin e linux mint . Nope Borrowed a network card from a friend after reading dlink dwl g122 could have some issues with linux. Tried this realtek card : same problems as above. Finally I tried again after the fifth reinstallation of ubuntu. Both NM and wicd keep saying wrong password. Changed different password. Password is fine of course (i'm using it now with win) So I Reset router password to none. Now it says: "acquiring ip address" and keep saying that forever. Now I'm using win7 on the same wifi network, router, and same card (cards) and everything works fine at first attempt.

I have installed Ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper-utils_1.8-0ubuntu2_i386.deb) and the GUI for ndiswrapper. The ndiwrapper GUI reports that the hardware was not found. Yet I am able to connect to the wlan using Windows.

I installed Wubi Ubuntu to try it out, and it all worked perfectly accept no wireless networks, not even nextdoors were listed.

Currently I'm having trouble connecting to the guest wireless network at my work. I've read through a couple threads that seem similar to my problem. I tried going through the terminal window and following the instructions that was offered to others. I'm just wondering if my hardware is different, if I need drivers, if my permissions aren't correct.
1. I recently received a Sony Vaio laptop model # VGN-FE770G from a friend, and I'm enjoying running Ubuntu.
2. I followed another thread that suggested to change some lines in /etc/network/interfaces, but I don't have permission to edit this file. I don't really have the need to set up multiple users on my laptop, so how can I change my permissions to root? (Or is it a good idea even?) Should I log in as root?
3. How can I set my laptop up to be flexible with network selections, using hardware: (built-in camera and microphone for example), and useful applications?

I just did a fresh install of ubuntu studio 10.04 and I can not connect to either a wired or wireless network. The In Network Tools the IPv4 IP address is 127.0.0.1. It is plugged into a network giving out DHCP IP's. Both wired and wireless were working on ubuntu 9. I have tried to bring eth0 up in the terminal but it did not give an error or anything. It it running on a Dell Latitude D820 laptop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently developed a problem with my computer connecting to the internet which has totally stumped me and is currently forcing my to use windows much to my frustration. I am using ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. My wireless and wired network connections will not connect. They are all present in the menu and i can click on them but the connection tries to connect and then just times out and fails to connect. Everything still works fine in windows Vista. The more confusing thing is i tried some live disks to see if they would work but they all did exactly the same thing including a live disk of ubuntu 9.10 which used to work perfectly and live disks of openSUSE 11.4 and Mint 10. I struggling to tell if this could be a hardware problem or not. The fact that the live disks wouldn't work suggests a hardware problem but the fact that Vista still works totally throws that argument. I have looked all over these forums and elsewhere and have found some similar ish problems but non seem to have the severity of this one as all of those seem to be wireless only problems. The only thing that i was doing at the time this started was i had just set up a new secondary user account but i suspect that may be coincidental.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 64-bit laptop. Before that I used Windows7. In Windows, the internet connection worked perfectly well. But after installing Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the internet. The network-manager applet finally says that "You are disconnected". When I do the "ifconfig", I got no IP address.
So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in the same system. But the problem persists.

Yesterday I moved my modem (wireless) to my living room so the PS3 detected a better signal. In doing so, I had to run a new ethernet cable from my living room where the modem is into my office where the computer is. I use ubuntu 9.10
For some reason I cannot connect to the internet now. When I scroll over the connection, it says wire connection 1 is active. I have my settings manually set. I did notice the MAC address field is blank...
I didn't have an issue before, but with changing cables and whatnot, something got messed up somehow.

I am attempting to connect to my Windows Computer via a wired network on a sky router. When I tried with PClinuxOS it configured automatically. With the latest version of open SuSe 13.1this is quite a bit different. I have got as far as the network being auto and active with an Icon showing on the taskbar. However when I click on the Windows network Icon SuSe tyies to locate my Computer but then comes back with " failed to reteive share list from server. This is as far as I can get after several hours of trying.
