Ubuntu Multimedia :: What Could Make Minidlna Stop Being Responsive?

Jul 26, 2011

I just reinstalled Ubuntu at least twice for this problem: Minidlna starts fine for a few minutes, I can see it on the network with my television, windows and even my phone. However, after a few minutes (say one hour), it stops being there. The process keeps running, and is kinda responsive to rescans and restarts. However it becomes unusable after a few minutes. The last reinstall was pretty basic: Installed Ubuntu 9.04, upgraded to 10.04 (servers), installed minidlna, wait and... bam! So there were no conflicts in all that, so what could make minidlna stop being responsive?

Debian Multimedia :: Make KDE More Responsive And Faster ?

May 27, 2011

I am a GNOME user but because of the release of GNOME 3 i decided that i may have to start using KDE. So i installed KDE 4.6 from the qt-kde debian repository. It works more or less OK but i have a problem with the performance. It just doesn't feel as snappy as GNOME. For example if i have minimized Firefox when i maximize it it takes about a second for the window to draw and until then i just see and empty window. Or when i open nautilus it too takes a little to open and draw the window. Overall KDE seems a little unresponsive. Is this normal? And second, from time to time there seems to be huge performance issues - KDE suddenly becomes very slow - programs take a while to open, and the windows draw even slowlier than what i described previously. Also whenever there is a slowdown (like for example when i start a program) i hear some kind of scratching noises from a my laptop - like there is a heavy hard disk activity. I've heard that kind of noises before when doing something very demanding like compiling or archiving something.

Is there any way to make KDE more responsive and faster. I have disabled strigi and nepomuk.

I am running KDE on Debian Unstable with kernel 2.6.39-1-amd64 and NVidia driver 270.41.19 on a Thinkpad T61 laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, Nvidia Quadro NVS 140m and 4GB of Ram.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MiniDLNA And The Invisible Directories ?

May 26, 2010

I've been using a headless ubuntu machine for a few months now to torrent stuff and serve it up to my PS3 using MiniDLNA.

Everything was working fine until this morning when i decided the list of stuff in ~/Movies/Torrents was too long. I opened up the directory on my Mac (shared over the network using avahi and netatalk so my Mac thinks it's another Mac) and made some folders for shows in there. I moved the files into them and turned on my PS3. It was a bloodbath, only one of the new folders is seen by the PS3. It still sees folders that were created by transmission.

I changed the permissions to 777 for everything (had to to move folders around) and I also gave the new folders to my transmission user and group lest that was the problem (it wasn't).

Below is a screenshot of $ls -l ~/Movies/Torrents I have marked the ones that show up on the PS3. Only 'Lost' was made today out of the ones it sees. [url]

It's Ubuntu 9.10.

Debian Multimedia :: Minidlna Not Playing MP4 Videos To TV

Jan 17, 2015

I am trying to setup a media server running Debian 7.8 and the minidlna 1.0.24. My TV is a Toshiba 50L7300UC and can play music and show images via the DLNA. It will play .mkv videos too, but when I try to play an .mp4 video it says "Unsupported file". If I put the same .mp4 video onto a USB and plug that into the TV, the TV plays it no problem.

When testing streaming to my phone, everything works (music, pictures, MKV and MP4 videos).

How I can get the MP4 videos to stream to my TV?

Debian Multimedia :: Minidlna Service Shuts Itself Down

Feb 24, 2015

I have minidlna installed and half the time I go to use it, the service has stopped and I have to manually restart it with "service minidlna restart". I haven't restarted the server to cause this. There is nothing in the log file in /var/log/minidlna.log

After watching a video, it stopped. If I don't look at it for a few days, it stops.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Pulseaudio STOP Copying Mic Input To Main Output?

Nov 26, 2010

I have a headset microphone plugged into the built-in audio input. The output is plugged into an amplifier > speakers.

Pulseaudio is "helpfully" routing the microphone input signal to the speaker output. I do not want this. I go to pavucontrol and disable the "monitor of the internal audio analog stereo" -- and what I say into the microphone is still coming out of the speakers.

Google gives a lot of information about how to live-stream mic input over the Internet. And, I found this here (that's for karmic, I'm running lucid):

[URL]

... but that's about how to ENABLE loopback. It says loopback should not be enabled by default, but I very clearly hear that something is doing the same thing as loopback.

(Of course, I need to hear sound from applications that are playing, and when I'm dictating text into NaturallySpeaking running under virtual box, I need sound input to go there -- so turning the mic all the way down to zero is not the solution.)

I'm fairly sure I remember hearing this behavior ever since installing Ubuntu, and I didn't do anything to turn it on. I can't imagine most users would prefer this behavior -- if it's the default behavior, why? It makes absolutely no sense to me. (Sorry. It's one of those piddly little configuration things that costs a couple of hours of web searching time, and after a while I just have to give up, but not before becoming much more frustrated than I should have to.)

So, to be clear, here's what I want:

- Applications playing audio should send sound to the main output.

- Applications receiving audio input should hear the microphone.

- Microphone sound should not EVER go to the main output unless I have explicitly launched an application making the connection. (The signal goes input -> output even when NO application is open - hence my consternation.)

Software :: MiniDLNA Plus VLC To XBox 360 Or DirecTV On-The-Fly

Apr 12, 2011

My end goal for this project is to display a live internet stream through my PC on my TV by way of some DLNA client. I am currently using MiniDLNA (set up and working) as my server and I have a DirecTV receiver and an XBox 360 as options for the client. So far, I can view static videos on the client (something that is in the proper video format for the client to read), but I am having issues getting a live stream to work. My end goal for all of this is to watch MLB on my TV without having to plug a PC into my TV.

For those not familiar, there is a python project (mlbviewer) that will find the stream for me through my MLB.com account and stream that to VLC. I can then use VLC to transcode that to something that the DLNA client can read. I'm very new to DLNA and streaming video, so I'm not entirely certain what I need to do here, but I've read that the answer for the XBox is an ASX file that points to the stream. Currently, I cannot see the ASX file on the XBox (or DTV receiver) though I can see the other video files in the folder - which I think may be a MiniDLNA problem.

I have tried uShare and MediaTomb, and so far I prefer MiniDLNA (if it works) for its light weight and command line configuration.

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP Not Responsive Unless Server Logged In?

Feb 1, 2011

I'm a total Linux noob, but I've needed a working development server for a while so I've put together an old celeron box running Ubuntu Server 10.10.The box runs fine, as does the Apache and MySQL servers, even if they did take a little while to fine tune! The problem I have is that vsftpd doesn't respond unless I'm logged on locally or via putty. As long as a local user is logged in, it's fine. If I try to connect when noone is logged in, then the connection times out waiting for the server message, and thereafter I have to login and stop / restart the vsftpd to make it work again.I'm not sure if the vsftpd is set to run on boot or on login and I have no idea how to check. Vsftpd is set to allow only local users, of which there is only one - so I can't check if it would work with any user logged in

Why, after a successful (I thought) dual boot installation w/ a side-by-side lynx and meerkat install and XP does my system refuse to boot? It just gets to the Dell screen, giving boot options (none of which are making any difference) and keeps looping it. Last night, after re-installing the grub (lost after the XP install) everything was working fine. I powered down and this morning tried to restart and...this. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure and reinstall apps--what can I do? And more importantly, WTF did this happen to begin with?

Fedora :: Can Make Libvirtd Stop Tempering With Iptables

May 6, 2010

I'm using fedora12 with KVM. I'm also using iptables for filtering and nat. Problem is when I start libvirtd, it overwrites my current iptables and iptables config file (/etc/sysconfig/iptables).

Ok it leaves an old copy in /etc/sysconfig/iptables.old, but the main problem is that it removes also all my custom settings from filter and my full nat. I would like the keep control on my iptables and like to manage them on my own. But I cant find an option in the libvirtd config files and/or the libvirtd startup scripts to prevent libvirt from changing my iptables. how I can make libvirtd stop tempering with my iptables?

I've installed both Fedora 15 x64 and Fedora 14 x64 on an HP Proliant DL380 G4 with the HP SmartArray SCSI controller, 2x146GB UW320 SCSI drives. The server was running RH v4 with a hardware RAID 1 with uptime of 400+ days with no issues.I broke the HW RAID and made 2x volumes and software RAID. I have another identical server with 4x 146GB UW320 SCSI drives with Fedora 12 x64 and SW RAID, so I figured 14/15 should be the same process. What happens is the server runs great for a while, but when I leave it for a few hours, it becomes non-responsive. I've re-installed 15 and 14 multiple times now and also installed NRPE, which shows load increasing to the point to where the server is non-responsive. It hits high load levels (as reported by NRPE). The load levels appear to be increasing over time. Such as last night:

General :: How To Make Emacs Stop Trapping Scroll Lock

Aug 29, 2011

I am using a Linux machine with a KVM switch at work, and I commonly use emacs while switching between that machine and my other machine. I typically use the keyboard shortcut to swap between machines on the KVM, which is the key sequence: Scroll Lock, Scroll Lock, Up or Down. If I have an emacs window on top on Linux and hit these buttons, it will trap the Scroll Lock key presses and trigger a system beep from the CPU speaker. The KVM still switches, but on occasion, after the switch, it will register Scroll Lock as being stuck pressed, and so I'll be treated to an earful of system beeping. I have to switch back to the computer to get it to stop.Is there something I can put in the .emacs file that will prevent the program from beeping when I hit Scroll Lock with the window on top?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Install List - Mouse Is Not Responsive - Cursor Is Not Showing

Apr 28, 2011

So I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 beta 2 two days back. Upon trying to use the system, these were the problems I had:

1. Mouse is absolutely not responsive. Even the cursor is not showing.

2. When I login through keyboard options only once this message flashed "Unity not supported by your hardware switch to classic mode on your next login". It flashed once, took me to the desktop screen where the classic desktop was available and I could not access anything without keyboard shortcuts.

3. When I tried launching firefox, deluge or even tried using the terminal to connect to the net I am unable to connect.

4. My USB devices are not read.

5. I finally tried to do a clean install of 10.10 using the live cd I already have but the OS is not booting from the cd.

As a result I am stuck with a comp which has no mouse, no internet, no usb support, no cd support. Do you guys have any idea how I get it to work again?

Slackware :: Usb Mouse Connected To A Laptop Is Completely Non-responsive ?

Oct 19, 2010

I installed slackware 13.1 lately to a laptop. its a toshiba satellite m40 185 if it makes any difference. In any case, and while the touchpad works flawlessly, connecting a standard USB mouse to the pc does not power up the mouse (its a microsoft notebook optical mouse) and of course the mouse pointer does not follow the mouse's moves... no clicks either.

Basically when I do

Quote:

I don't see junk printed on my terminal, whereas moving around the touchpad I do see some.

Just to clarify, It's not just X that is not working, gpm doesn't get mouse moves from the usb mouse either (touchscreen works flawlessly in console too).

my xorg.conf looks like:

Quote:

I added the last 2 options after following this guide, which seems to cover concurrent read-in from more than 1 pointing devices.

All the other guides I found assume that you have a working gpm.

One question is: since with the new radeon drivers the xorg.conf file can be missing altogether and X will not cry, does it make any difference to add mouse options in xorg.conf?

Continuing my thought: it must be something else. Kernel doesn't seem to be the problem. The USB subsystem works since usb mass storage devices (that's all I have sitting around) are sensed by the kernel and udev properly. Additionally, the problem persists with the huge kernel.

Before slackware, I used to run fedora on the laptop and both pointing devices worked properly, however I think fedora uses another method of setting up the X server devices..
