Ubuntu Installation :: APM Upgrade To Make Computer Stop Freezing On Startup
Feb 12, 2010
Two weeks ago my computer started freezing on start up when plugged in. It was suggested to upgrade the APM. What is this and is it not updated through the package update? If not how do I upgrade it?

Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10. Applications freeze intermittently but release with Esc. Movie players acts up with interrupted play as well as fast forward and sound and visual sync. Skype relays interrupted sound intermittently. Problem gives impression of poor RAM performance but problem immediately after upgrade leaves doubt.

I installed FC11 from installation cds twice and I'm having a problem with Firefox freezing the system. The mouse cursor will move but nothing else is responsive, including mouse buttons and keyboard.I checked the media on every disc and they all check fine.I never had this problem with FC10. I tried upgrading Firefox -- with the necessary dependency upgrades too but without success.I tried to downgrade to FC10 Firefox and ran into a great big hassle with that.

Desktop running a clean install of Karmic with ext4, /home on a separate ext3 partition. If I attempt to use Nautilus to copy a file over 1GB (that seems to be the tipping point) from Desktop to another partition or an external HDD, or if I download anything at the same time as I'm copying any file, the system freezes completely (no mouse, keyboard lights flash and keypresses don't register), and the only thing I can do is hit the reset button. I don't know enough to figure out exactly what's causing it, but I think it's ext4; this very same hardware ran Jaunty with ext3 like a champ, but when I installed Karmic, I formatted that partition to ext4, and that's when the freezing started. In the event that I don't know what I'm talking about and it's actually video drivers, I am using the Nvidia driver (185) on a GeForce 6200 because I use TwinView and don't know how to do a spanned desktop without it. I had used Nvidia drivers in Intrepid and Jaunty, though, with no problems. I have no Compiz effects enabled at all.
I'm perfectly willing to go back to ext3 (I think I remember how to make the list to "auto-install" applications, and /home is separate anyway), but if it is ext4 causing the problem, I'm still likely to run into it because one of my external HDDs is formatted ext4, and I don't really have anywhere to stick nearly 1TB of photos and video to reformat it ext3. Ultimately, if that's what it takes to fix the freezing, I'll do it, but I'd rather not. I like Ubuntu...I've used it since Warty, but this is wearing me out. I will carefully follow instructions and do nearly anything; I just want the freezing to stop.

I am getting frustrated and at my wits end. I went away from home for 3 days and came back to a frozen computer. To start, my linux computer was locked and wouldn't allow me to switch to my other computer using my KVM. All I saw was the default wallpaper with no icons, cursor or anything. Rebooting the computer allowed me to resume normal operation on the other but not on my linux comp. Now when I boot I can only get to a recovery console if luck is on my side and trying a normal boot freezes the computer with a blank screen and blinking cursor.
I tried editing the GRUB commands with "nomodeset", "i915.modeset=0" and "i915.modeset=1" with no luck. I also tried removing "quiet" and "splash" from the boot and it freezes at random parts of the boot. Sometimes with an error loading a device with IRQ 21 and sometimes on a memory address. I am running XP on the same computer, so I thought I would try to boot into that, even THAT freezes!I have even tried running my LiveCD and it tells me there is an error reading the boot CD...the same CD I installed with 3 weeks ago without any problem! As I type this, the computer is booting, sort of, to a black screen with a ridiculously large "X" cursor and a small white dot in the upper left.System Specs:Athlon 32004gb RAMGeForce 7200generic DVDgeneric sound

While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

I often want to have mythtv running on one display while I continue with work on the main display, as I CAN chew gum and walk at the same time. When the task is administrative, such as running update manager, I am asked for my password so Ubuntu (10.04 amd64) can authenticate me as an administrator. Good, but I think I would like it not to freeze the desktop, including the mythtv, while it does so. Is there a good reason not to want that? If not, can it be done (avoid freeze when authenticating) and if so, how?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. My computer (IBM Thinkpad R40) is freezing whenever I turn it on. Once it gets to the login, the mouse and keys don't work. I don't know if this is an Ubuntu problem or a problem with my laptop. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I need to upgrade my RAM (I have half a gig RAM; I have a lot on my laptop, so maybe I need to make it a full gig?).

Why, after a successful (I thought) dual boot installation w/ a side-by-side lynx and meerkat install and XP does my system refuse to boot? It just gets to the Dell screen, giving boot options (none of which are making any difference) and keeps looping it. Last night, after re-installing the grub (lost after the XP install) everything was working fine. I powered down and this morning tried to restart and...this. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure and reinstall apps--what can I do? And more importantly, WTF did this happen to begin with?

If I have compiz on, it causes my system to freeze sometimes at startup. I've turned compiz off, but I miss the effects. Is there a setting somewhere I could change to prevent the freezing at startup. We have a computer with an nvidia card with compiz enabled, and this doesn't freeze. I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start
Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite L355-S7905 Intel Celeron Processor 585 @ 2.16 Ghz, Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset. 4GB of Memory, 160 GB HD. Tri-boot: Windows 7, Unbutu 10.04 and Fedora 12.
Here is what happened: I had a hard/forced shutdown while using Ubuntu 10.04. Some warning text flashed on the screen before it went blank and I could not read it. Now when I turn on my laptop it freezes on the Toshiba set up screen. I can not go to the F2 setup, I can not go to the F12 boot seqence and I can not use F8 safe mode. Also the ESC button had no effect.
I have tried turning it on with the Win 7 cd in the drive but nothing. The same when I put my Ubuntu 10.04 cd in the drive, nothing. My guess is that the forced shutdown messed up the bootfile/grub order. The harddrive runs for a few seconds then stops. Should I attack the problem from a Windows view point or a Ubuntu view point?

I recently installed Xubuntu 11.04 fresh on my machine. There were some minor freezes that occurred that seem to be pretty common while reading these forums, but other than that it was working great.
A couple of times on restart the computer froze up. And when I say froze up, nothing appeared. Usually there's a splash screen with the "HP" logo, but in this case it didn't even get that far. My monitor was black but the orange "idle" power light was on. I had to hold the power button down to shut it off and turn it back on again. After that it was able to boot up as normal.
I should have taken this as a warning, and it has gotten worse and worse. Now I'm at the point where I can't even turn the computer on even once to get it back to the desktop. Like I said, on startup, there is no splash screen, no grub menu, no audible beeps, no blinking cursor, just a black screen.
I bought this off of woot a while back ago, so if you're looking for system specs here they are: [URL]
Also, I read this forum here [URL] about graphics errors, but I figured this didn't apply to my case because the users there were able to get to a terminal or the grub boot menu.
What I would like to do is do a fresh install of 10.04 LTS. Does anyone know of a way that I would be able to do this if I can't even get the HP splash screen to appear in order to boot from a USB stick?

Randomly; my computer will freeze up. I can move the mouse but I cannot click on anything. This has happened at least 20 times today. Occasionally my computer will totally just shut down. My computer has been almost completely rendered Useless. I do not know what to do or even where to begin. The sooner we solve this problem the better. I do college online... so this has a major impact on me and my work and progress as a student.

This computer freezes, requiring power-off, somewhere between 2 seconds and 2 hours after boot-up, most every time I use it. Sometimes I've had to power-down perhaps six times in 10 minutes. When it freezes I have a movable mouse-pointer that can select nothing. Right-
click does not operate. I don't seem able to isolate a single cause. I ran a RAM check with no errors showing. Matters not which version of Ubuntu I choose when booting. I've replaced mouse and keyboard. Only running 256 meg of ram and do plan to

I am running Ubuntu Lucid with Compiz, Cairo Dock, Screenlets, on a Laptop with an i7 Nvidia graphics card. After I wake my laptop up from a suspend or hibernation I notice that my computer will freeze for several seconds every so many seconds. After looking at the System Monitor I noticed that the application that is stealing all my CPU and causing my computer to freeze is XOrg. Here is my xorg information
[code]...
I never had this problem before December. I was thinking it may have something to do with ubuntu header 2.6.32 because it was soon after I started having problems. Does anyone have any theories or ideas as to why XOrg is stealing my CPU?

I just tried to upgrade from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 (64bit). Everything went fine until the machine tried to reboot. Now it stops while booting on the screen where the ubuntu logo and five red dots appear. I'm unable to open a terminal (alt+ctrl+f1 does not result in anything) and the only thing I've been able to do is to reboot the machine.
If I reboot by pressing ctrl+alt+delte I see some information for a short while, it seems that the boot stops on "checking battery state" I've googled this, and it seems that quite a few other have had the same problem, but they have been able to open a terminal, any ideas on how I can do this? Or any other suggestions on how to fix this?
My system is a dekstop with a Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card. I recently installed the newest Nvidia driver. I forgot to mention that I did an online upgrade.

This is happening pretty often. when in ubuntu, usually while i'm browsing the web, my browser will go dim then a box will come up saying something along the lines of missing resources. the thing is, all my desktop icons will then turn to red x's and no text characters on any further boxes will show. when i restart it says grub error and takes one more restart to finally come on. i got fed up with it and switched over to windows 7 where my browser also froze and my computer froze up.
