Debian Multimedia :: XFCE - Ugly Fonts In Qt Applications

Jan 8, 2010

I use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Build A Streaming Box Or Cables ?

May 19, 2010

So I'm sitting on some components from my old pc build and am looking to stream over my tv once again. My decision rests on do I build the box, run Boxee and/or Windows Media Platform to keep the box with my TV or do I buy the 35ft RCA video cable and dvi composite out adapter for my video card and go that route? All my music and media is stored on a external backup drive so the box I build would not have access to the media unless I could create a wireless network but I do not know how to do this with Ubuntu. Anyone willing to hold my hand and help me walk through this to get a decision made?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Build A Music Media Center

Aug 27, 2010

I am trying to build a media center for music for me and my roommates to use. Basically I want to build a system just for playing music. Idealy (dare i mention itunes in here) I would love a computer just just booted into itunes(orsomething like it (or better) that just was for playing music.

I plan on buying a computer, like a tiny desktop (i dont want to take up a lot of room) with a huge hard drive just for holding music, and needs usb drives/cd drive for loading music onto it (or just a usb drive). Then get a small screen, not huge with a remote that does not run on wife. Also would like a keyboard on the remote if possible.

Anywho whats a good media center, and can I boot just straight into the media center? I would like support for; browse by artist, album and just song name. Also I would like to be able to make playlist within it, and it needs to be able to support a massive amount of songs.

desktop computers to use for this project and remotes that I could use? Also how would you suggest the best way to go about doing this? I would love if it booted straight into the media player. Internet is not a huge deal to me, might connect to internet once just to grab album artwork. So a media player that auto fetches artwork too would also be nice.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Build The NVIDIA Kernel Module?

Feb 26, 2011

before i get a lot of annoyed responses, I did check the forum and found a couple older previous threads on this topic, but they don't seem to really explain any real solutions to the problem im having. Here's the story- I was looking around for instructions and found this "howto guide" on installing nvidia display driver [URL]I went through the steps he listed:

downloaded the driver packages, install the dependencies from the shell, and then i pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to get out of X and into text mode. I stopped my gdm with the command: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stopand then i tried to install the driver using: sudo sh (on my NVIDIA driver- his version was a bit outdated compared to the one I downloaded)But here is where the problem starts, as I go through the installation process and click yes, i reach the "progress bar" then the screen says "unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module". and then it just exits. What is going on here? Am I missing some other package or file?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Forked-daapd 0.16 Build On Natty 11.04 Server?

May 1, 2011

This is the result of reading lots of advice on this forum and elsewhere--thought I'd put it into one post for people's convenience. Picked up the latest tarball at [URL]... Unpacked the tarball with tar -zxvf nameofball.tar.

Loaded the following packages that it depended on: sudo apt-get install build-essential libtagc0-dev gperf libunistring-dev pkg-config zlib1g-dev libconfuse-dev libavahi-client-dev libsqlite3-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libswscale-dev libmxml-dev libevent-dev libavl-dev libantlr3c-dev libgcrypt11-dev libflac-dev libogg-dev libtagc0-dev libasound2-dev .

Ran ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --enable-flac --enable-musepack. Fix any errors that show up by tracking down a dependency that I hadn't listed above. Keep on running until it has no errors. Then make; sudo make install. I had installed checkinstall, so I ran make; sudo checkinstall -D instead.

Then to set up the system:

Code:
#make an init.d script (the script I used is at the end of this post)
sudo -e /etc/init.d/forked-daapd
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/forked-daapd
sudo update-rc.d forked-daapd defaults

OpenSUSE :: Find All The Build-deps Or What They Are For That Matter To Build Boxee

Feb 20, 2010

I'm in love with my Opensuse 11.2. Love my KDE 4.4. The only thing I miss from my Ubuntu installation, is the ability to use Boxee. I would be more than willing to compile Boxee from source. I only have 2 problems with that:

1) I don't know where I can find all the build-deps or what they are for that matter to build Boxee.

2) I'm running on a Netbook. Yes, my measly Intel Atom is no fun for compiling and building.

What are my options/what can I do to get Boxee up and running on 11.2? I've tried searching on build service for an RPM, but I think due to legal restrictions, Boxee can't be on there.

Trying to install SW 13.1 (on DVD) on the following system: M/B Intel: DX38BT Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 - 2.66GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Socket 775 Memory Corsair Dual Channel 8192MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz Memory (4x2048MB) Graphics Diamond Radeon HD 3850 Video Card - Viper, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 P/S Ultra 1000W

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}

Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels

Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04: Openshot (mlt+ffmpeg) For Theora Ogv - 'portable' Build From Latest Source?

Jul 29, 2010

I was having some trouble trying to get video editing directly with Theora OGVs on Ubuntu 10.04. To be honest, the default Lucid video editor Pitivi (which is a front-end for gstreamer) actually works fine with ogv - but you cannot do video overlays (compositing) in Pitivi. So I looked at Cinelerra, LiVES, OpenShot and Kdenlive as editors that may offer overlays/compositing. They can all be sudo apt-get install-ed, but none of them wanted to run properly with ogvs - especially the ogv video preview didn't work. Looking for a solution, the following bugs came up:

Bug #574457 in mlt (Ubuntu): melt displays and renders garbage while playing .ogv in ubuntu 10.04
Bug #535018 in openshot (Ubuntu): Openshot cannot playback ogg video
Bug #566781 in OpenShot Video Editor: Imported Ogg Theora file shows corrupted video in OpenShot 1.1.3

[code].....

However, since it doesn't seem a bugfix will be released for Lucid - that pretty much means only one thing, if we want video editing of ogv in Lucid: build from source. If we build all dependencies for Theora ogv video from the latest source: melt

ffmpeg
vorbis
theora
ogg

then, in principle, working with ogv in Openshot and/or Kdenlive should (and does) work - if these video editors are directed to use these new binaries (built from source). Note that Openshot is basically a python frontend for melt, and it does not need compiling as such (though some precautions should be taken, see below) - so once the above sources are built, a test with Openshot can be done. I used for building these sources is HOWTO: Install and use the latest FFmpeg and x264 - Ubuntu Forums This HOWTO uses checkinstall in order to generate .deb packages from source, which are then installed into the running OS, to allow for satisfying of dependencies. I'd like to keep my system 'vanilla' clean, and experiment with sources outside of my system (i.e. as in a "portable installation") - and this post outlines that approach.

Basically, we download the sources, and build them in order of dependency - and since ogg/vorbis/theora source already uses it, we can use pkg-config to configure some other source dependencies as well: by writing *-uninstalled.pc files in respective source directories; and then adding these directories to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable. However, some manual changes to source files will be needed too. Finally, for each source package, we will run only 'make', but not 'make install' - and then in the end, we will collect all binaries (libraries and executables) in a single folder; and add a couple of scripts, that will setup an environment referring to these binaries, so that Openshot/Kdenlive (when called from this environment) may work correctly with ogv. The full list of sources built using this approach are: ogg

vorbis
theora

[code]....

Both x264, and libvpx (for VP8/WebM), have been added as recommended in the HOWTO; while Ogg Video Tools are added mostly for the (relatively new) tool oggTranscode. The approach to building these sources is given below, in the form of a commented bash script - since its quite big, it is included in the reply to this post.

Ubuntu :: Ugly Font Rendering Inside Some Webpages ?

Apr 2, 2010

This happens to me with any browser (tested: Firefox, Chrome and Opera) and DE (tested; Gnome, KDE, LXDE). While for the most part, the text is OK, some text looks quite messed up (please look at the attachment for an example).

By inspecting the affected pages, I fond that usually (maybe ever?) when the characters are garbled, the font is Tahoma.

Then I tested with The Gimp and its text tool: I choosed Tahoma and I tried to type something inside an image. Same issue. It seems to happens when the font size is 14 px or >= 17 px.
