This is not what I'm looking for. Rather, I just want some insight into how I spend my time on my computer. I'd like to waste less time on my computer, and spend my time on more productive tasks. The first step to improving anything is to measure it. But I can't be bothered or remember to click on some icon and switch "projects" every time I change from my terminal to browsing ....., or something like that. I want the time I spend on different applications tracked automatically.

A little extra info: I am a teacher/network admin for a small private school with about 50 student computers (that I wish to become Linux machines in the future) and about 10 staff computers (mostly Windows laptops--I do not expect the staff to convert to Linux as readily), I currently do not have an intranet implemented.
I was wondering if you could help me find a good documentation about expect, I have searched all the web but with no luck. I need to build a complex script that I need at work to automatically connect to 50 pc`s (with linux based os) and execute 10 or more script with the output into a text file and the email the file to my email address.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an ECS gf7100pvt-m3 that has the Nvidia MCP73 chipset that supports HDMI out. Unfortunately the MB only has a DVI connector which from what I have read is supposed to cross wire the audio to the correct pins on the HDMI (have a ticket in with ECS to see if like ATI there is a special adapter).
I have tried every thing but only Analog audio is working.

The only error is the at the Aumix isn't touching....I can select HDMI or IEC958 1 etc etc and the audio mixer shows full blue as if it should be working but I can't get VLC or MythTV to output sound.
I have installed mythbuntu 10.04 and installed my tv tuner (saa7130). I can play games on composite but cannot scan for tv cannels. how i can scan for channels because he cannot find a single channel (I think this is weird) ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalled Mythbuntu today. Spend hour over hour trying to get MythTVto work together with my Hauppauge WinTv-NOVA-HD-S2 card. I've followd so many wikis, reinstalled, tried again ... no success. The card itself works fine. I can use it with MeTV or on Mplayer - no problem. I managed to create a channels.conf. Also no problem. MythTV recognizes the correct card. I have set it to LNB. Now in the backend setup I cannot manage to get the card to scan. And if I try to point it to the channels.conf I am also getting an error message (Failed to open '%1'.

"? no This just times out When I use -exact for the expect keyword it does work What am I doing wrong? THe first should also match in my opinion because it is equal as well. Even if I remove the I still have the same issue if I try without -exact. I don't understand. I tried removing the but still got the same.
I can install Boxee beta on my mythbuntu 9.04 installation, but when I try to run it, I get the following errors:

I get the same error if I run as root. For now, I don't care so much about the second error, but if anybody has some advice about how to resolve the first error (GLIBCXX...), I've used Linux for years (usually gentoo. I would be surprised if the version of Boxee compiled for Ubuntu 9.04 depended on an installed library without the proper compiler version.
Note that I am using *mythbuntu*, not ubuntu itself, so this may be part of the problem, but it would also surprise me... I'm happy to just install the correct library, but where is it?? I assume I should get it from Ubuntu, or I will break something.
I've also posted to the boxee support forum, but not heard back yet (they are probably busy!)...
Also, I've got Boxee alpha running in a 32 bit chroot environment (on my 64 bit machine), so at least *some* version of Boxee runs, but I wonder if there is some conflict between the two versions.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get my screen resolution set in Mythbuntu 9.10, but there is no xorg.conf on my system! I'm trying to figure out what to do (the xfce tool on mythbuntu doesn't offer the correct resolution, and I'm not even sure what driver I'm using). I've seen other threads saying to run nvidia-setup or somesuch. I assume the appropriate tool in my case would be aticonfig (I saw that elsewhere too) as I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600XT, but that tool says:

I have an old computer I have setup as a backup computer / Linux practice computer. It is a Sun Ultra2 w/ 2x200MHz SPARC CPUs, 512MB RAM, 9.1GB SCSI HD, and Creator 3D video card. It is running Debian 6, by default with no GUI installed. But, I am wanting to try out several minimalistic GUIs with it. So, first thing I did was:
aptitude install icewm
aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-sunffb
aptitude install rcconf (used to disable X from automatically starting)
aptitude install xfe
startx
And well, it worked. Well, for some reason, I couldnt read any of the buttons in xfe, and it was stuck in the upper left corner of the screen. So then I tried PCManFM, which was better, but the icons were still all blank. However, upon trying other WMs, I have had very little success. I got dwm working, but didnt try it out for too long before removing it and trying others. I was able to get LXDE to work, and that was that last thing I got to work. Now Ive tried IceWM again, as well as jwm, and every time I end up with a black screen.
By the way, any suggestions on a WM/FM (and maybe panel) combo would be greatly appreciated as well. Even with IceWM and PCManFM, this system is pretty slow. Its really going to mostly be used as a backup internet machine. Whats the bare minimum setup to get icons on the desktop?

View 9 Replies View RelatedA processor is very important to me and I'm curious what processor to get for a new computer build. I will be using Ubuntu for most things except iTunes, HD movies, and a few low spec requiring games on Win 7. I am building it as right now I have a half year old netbook that can do most things just fails at game play and movies but it's alright. And I have a desktop with just Ubuntu that's about the same quality but 8 years old. I want to build a computer that will be very fast for the next 4 years enough to get me to college and buy a nice laptop. I am on a small budget of around 500- 750 dollars. I have most things picked out but processor has me stumped. To me processor is a bit tricky to replace and I'd rather get a higher-end one to start and stick with that than buy another CPU two years down the road.
I don't mind upgrading RAM, GPU, and or even the HDD at a later point but I want to get the CPU as close to perfect as possible. First I heard AMD processors tend to be a bit hot. I was wondering what cooler is $50 or less that does a great job at cooling a AMD AM3 socket CPU. I do plan to overclock a very small bit perhaps up to .3 GHz plus max. First I was thinking a nice core i5 at $200 and never really checked anything else. Then, I was thinking a hexa-core at 2.8 GHz I think but decided too much and didn't need six cores. The AMD socket type also supported USB 3.0 which I instantly fell in love with. Then I found a quad core Phenom II x4 black edition at 3.20 GHz for around $160.I liked the core unlocker and it looked incredible. Now I'm rethinking a bit again.
I found a dual-core that is same thing as the other AMD one above except well only two cores. I think that would do me fine I'd I'd save $60 by getting 2 less cores. With the things I use a computer for (Ubuntu, Win7, HD quality playback, minor gaming like Runescape, and small multitasking like openoffice a browser or two and perhaps some pictures, game or movie.) I also want to be able to do this quickly for the next 4 years without a hiccup or at least to a minimum if possible. I really don't want to upgrade CPU once I get that bad boy in there. I also want it ready for higher versions of Windows like Windows 8 is supposedly coming sometime in 2012 I've heard. I just want the best CPU to be fast and efficient, run cool, and work well for me for the next 4 years.

However, recently the GPU on my desktop went down and I have been unwilling to take the steps to have it fixed (variety of reasons). My main worry about building an LFS system was about rendering the computer unusable, but since this machine was already broken...I am looking at this as an opportunity.
I had two hard-drives on the desktop, one with linux (ssh enabled) and the other had windows which I subsequently deleted. Since I can't use the desktop directly because of the broken GPU, I am thinking of using ssh to connect and build the rest from there. So far, everything seems to be going according to plan, but I am just beginning the build, so thus far I have only partitioned and built the filesystems.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was unable to boot my computer because bad blocks in my drive 'appeared' over my current and most used partition, for 9.10. I discovered there were 101 bad blocks on the drive, so I called western digital and had them send me a new one. In the meantime, running fsck on the drive managed to sort out the bad blocks for the time being. The replacement drive arrived on Friday, and since then, I've been trying to clone my current drive to the replacement. Using Clonezilla, I kept getting the error "bad partition table on /dev/sdb". Alright, I tried a bit-by-bit transfer using dd, but for some reason, the transfer fails on the last partition, leaving the replacement drive unbootable. What do you think I should do? Does it sound likethet sent me another faulty drive, or am I just doing something stupid? I've copied my drive before, but ive never had these problems- i just popped in Clonezilla and away it went.
I'm really leary about this drive, I have many important files for school and TONS of music. The school files, I can back up, and the music could be shuffled to another external drive, but I reallydo no want to go through all of the time and effort to move it to a new drive that may already be failing. Does anyone know what I should do? Is there some way to test the 'health' of the drive before I spend hours rebuilding my filesystem?
I want to build a desktop computer. I will be running Linux Mint on it, probably the LXDE community edition. I use it for school (homework and studying), research on the net (general browsing and specific research on Linux stuff since I hope to one day open my own Linux computer store), and for listening to music and watching videos, things like that. I am not a power user, adn I don't plan to be one any time soon. But I am learning how to work in GNU/Linux, since I want to make a living that way.
Currently, though, I just need a good computer made out of new components, that will work correctly. So What kinds of components to get. I need a motherboard, a CPU (I prefer AMD), a hard drive (I will run SATA), and RAM. I have a DVD burner on my current computer, and I can use that in my new system. I plan to put my new computer together in the tower my current computer is using. I am just looking for some knowledgeable suggestions here for what to get to run my computer the best.
I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

Total noob here. I am trying to install Mythbuntu 10.10 on a computer with and empty hard drive using a CD.The install start fine, I make a couple of selections to tell the installer I want to use the entire harddrive, select the timezone and the install starts without any problems. Unfortunatly after about 30min or so, the installation seem to be stalled out with the progress bar at the 85-90% range. There are no obvious errors in the log.
I have successing installed Ubuntu in the past (although not on this hardware). The PC includes an IDE based DVD-R, 120Gb sata based ssd, 939 dual core processor. 8600GT video card. 2Gb memory. One possibility is that I don't have a TV tuner card installed yet. Was going to do that after I got Ubuntu up and running but perhaps the installer is looking for a tuner card. I realize I am not giving anyone much to work but I am not sure what I could post.
