Debian Multimedia :: XFCE - Ugly Fonts In Qt Applications
Jan 8, 2010I use XFCE on Debian (squeeze) and I'm sick and tired of the ugly fonts in all Qt-apps. See below what it looks like in qtconfig-qt4 with a deleted ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. I've done some googling, but without any satisfaction. I've tried to change font (Font family drop down menu in pic), and some fonts looks as bad as the default (Sans Serif), and some look ok. Something seems to be fscked up.

Jun 16, 2011I am new to linux... and I have Installed Debian as my default OS replacing Ubuntu.
I have Installed Plymouth:
# apt-get install plymouth
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
# /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme THEME
# update-initramfs -u
Plymouth does not work. What went wrong? or what more should I do to make it work.Also how do I install themes to plymouth, which are not there in the theme package? I have come across this theme I really like but it is in tar.gz and I am looking for some guidance from the forum to run tar.gz packages.

Apr 28, 2016since few days I have installed a fresh debian testing on my new laptop, I am using XFCE4 as DE, I noticed that when I use these themes: greybird, bluebird and albatross the GTK3 applications (mostly from gnome 3 stack) do not display correctly the application. I have another laptop with an older debian testing with XFCE4 and the GTK3 themes work properly. The only relevant difference between the old computer and the new one are the video driver, the older use radeonsi driver and newest the nvidia blob binary.

Feb 1, 2016I have installed xfce with synaptic and when i rebooting, i can't log in with my normal user on gnome and xfce, but i can it with terminal (ctrl + alt + fX), but i can login in gnome with a new user.
I have uninstall xfce and remove gnome and reinstall it but i still cant...
dpkg-reconfigure gnome-shell i think didnt change nothing...
I haven't /etc/X11/ directory...
On terminal, if i do startx, works, but i cant login gnome anyway...

Nov 25, 2010I installed Fedora 14 XFCE last weekend on my laptop..been putting in a little time here and there into customizing it, as I was trying to make it my new main OS, when suddenly today it suffered a complete meltdown that I have no idea where to start in trying to fix it. All I was doing was browsing through the desktop themes. I hit a certain theme, don't know which one, and the screen went blank. X then looked like it was trying to restart, then blank again. Then X looked like it was restarting, and blank..and repeat endlessly. I tried turning the laptop off and then turning it back on again.same result. Now I basically have a dead system, practically speaking, because I can't use it.
Putting aside the fact that it is immensely frustrating to have a Linux OS choke and die on me just from browsing through the preset desktop themes, does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this, aside from doing another fresh install? The only way I can think of to fix it would be to login into some kind of rescue mode (which I don't know how to do), get to a shell prompt, find the right config file (which I have no clue about, either), and fix the settings to where it will at least boot up, then I can select the default theme and never touch the themes again.
After that I suppose I should put in a bug report or something to Fedora about this -- that is, if I can reproduce it. Maybe that'd be at least some compensation, since I had high hopes for Fedora when I decided to try it, but this sort of crash-and-burn is just utterly disappointing.
Ubuntu :: Shiki-colors In Xfce - Showing Up In GTK Themes List
May 5, 2010I'm running PC/OS, which is based on Xubuntu. I've got all of the Shiki-Colors GTK themes, the GNOME-Colors icon themes, and the Arc-Colors themes installed. Everything's going great, but I've got one little annoyance going on. What's happening is the Arc-Colors (both the list and non-list version) showing up in my GTK themes list, and that's obviously not where they belong
these, of course, are supposed to be GDM themes. What's more, I see nothing in the /usr/share/themes directory to indicate that they're in there by mistake, and in fact, I distinctly remember putting them in /usr/share/gdm/themes, which is where they belong. I first tried this downloading and installing them from the repos, and when they acted up there, I tried the manual installs from GNOME-Look and got the same thing, too.

May 10, 2011I'm in Debian testing and I had Gtk+-3 from the apt-get. Now because I wanted to install Xnoise in Debian from source, I needed gtk+-2. So I installed gtk+-2 from the source. And after that Xnoise was installed and worked great. I've noticed that Xnoise theme was standard(gray). Note: I installed both of them to /usr/local(default/no prefix). But when I rebooted my computer, all Gnome themes was also gray. BTW: After reset I can't hear any sound in Xnoise, but this isn't the subject here. Therefor, I went to System->Preferences->Appearance and It tells me the following error in a yellow box(translated): "The theme won't seen as excepted because GTK+ Adwaita suit isn't installed."
I had the "clean theme" which is the default Gnome theme in Debian. Now all the themes have gone.... I can see only "Custom" which is ugly gray. How can I restore it?

Mar 28, 2015how to use my downloaded themes, I used a default Xfce theme. The only issue I saw with that was that the Synamptic window did not take the selected theme, it was default. When I selected my downloaded them in the Appearance menu, Synamptic started using the selected theme, but everythign else (99% of windows) went back to the default light grey color. Although my dark theme is selected, only Synaptic (that I know of) is using it.

Icon themes I put in ~/.icons don't show up, and the icons in /usr/share/icons are permission as such:

Mar 11, 2010lxappearance won't let me change themes on Squeeze. It just doesn't do anything, neither preview, nor theme setting. Turns out this is a known bug, and allegedly fixed. Ppl are told to "upgrade" their package. However, in Squeeze it's still the old package, and it doesn't work. So I filed another new bug report, which they closed and told me to upgrade the package.
Upgrade? From Sid? What happened to fixing Testing so it can become the next stable? Not much stable if a major DE can't change themes. Not that it's a real problem, but it's
annoying. I purged lxappearance and manually installed its Sid counterpart, only to find out
the bug is still there.

Apr 26, 2011In the gmd3 greeter.conf-defaults file its tells me the themes are located /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme, but wheres that directory actually at, like how I can find it?
Btw, I know I can go back to gdm, but I'd rather understand how to theme this, before. I might just.I'm using compiz, btw, if that makes any difference.
Debian Multimedia :: Icon Themes Added To Gnome Turned Up Missing
Mar 26, 2010On my laptop, I have stable installed. The original install was about two years ago, and I've just been keeping up with all of the stable updates. It is now an up to date Lenny. Over the months and years I have added several new icon themes to Gnome. I have noticed over time that several of the icon themes' icons have turned up missing. Screenshot-2 is a closeup.
As you can see, icon themes Amaranth, Crux and Dropline Etiquette are missing their respective theme icons. The icon themes work, when selected, but the icon theme icon in the "Customize Theme" window never appears. Several of the other icon themes are the same. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the icon theme packs, but that doesn't fix it. I also have a desktop system of Debian stable with some of the same icon themes as on the laptop, but it does not have this problem. However, it is a much newer installation.

Nov 3, 2015I was having a problem with the sound not going up to a high volume on my machine, so I tried following some online tutorials and ended up destroying the sound system on my machine. Now, instead of just having quite sound, I have no sound. The machine is a Dell Precision server and the attached files show my sound configuration. Ideally, I would like a way to make the sound louder (>100%), but now I will settle for just having sound.

What I want is the same effect (or similar) to what gdm/gnome does.I have also found a solution that's about installing xfswitch-plugin, but it will also install gdm3 and lots of gnome dependencies.

Oct 11, 2015I installed Debian 8.2 XFCE but i just can't get the sound to work. With speaker-test in console the sounddevice works, but in any other application it doesn't.
I checked if the channels in the alsamixer were muted and tried everything I could think of but i couldn't get it to work on XFCE. On GNOME it works fine.

Jan 24, 2011I recently gave XFCE a try, after using Openbox for a long time and I really like it, so that I think I will switch totally to XFCE. All is working fine, except one thing: I really would like to have event sounds.
So I launched the Appearance-Module and checked under the Settings-tab both Enable event sounds and Enable input feedback sounds. Following the tooltip for the event sounds I also installed libcanberra, but I get absolutely no event sound.

I thought, maybe there is a lack of a sound theme, so I also installed freedesktop-sound-theme, but that didn't help. I did already searched with Google and in this forum, but have found nothing that would help me. I would be very happy if anyone can give me an advice what to check or has a link to a tutorial for this sounds.
