I have a laptop that has both Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on it. I want to install Debian alongside the other two OS'es in order to experiment with it.
View 1 RepliesI have a laptop primarily used for a client work. It is running Debian Wheezy, and wish to keep it intact in case I need to do more work for client.
I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside Debian, and use Ubuntu as a bit of a play/experiment area, etc... HD has lots of space (600GB free), and as far as I can tell Grub is installed in MBR.
I did some searches, and from what I can tell, it sounds like I can just install Ubuntu from ISO file, specify how much space to use (say 400GB), and that's it. This sounds almost too easy. Once I install and restart machine, will there be selection for what Distro to boot.
I'm trying to upgrade my Win8/Wheezy 64-bit machine to Jessie 8.1 by installing from the amd64-bit netinstall iso image on a USB flash drive. I had done the previous, Wheezy, install on a disk partition that was whole-partition LUKS/LVM drive, with separate logical partitions for swap, root, and home.
Before doing the upgrade, I booted to the BIOS to ensure that my UEFI system had the correct, CSM and Legacy modes enabled in it, so that installer would boot using the non-efi BIOS mode.
Step one of the upgrade was to boot the netinstall and enter the rescue mode so that I could manually do the cryptsetup/LVM business. When I returned to the installer, I mounted the now-recognized logical partitions normally, choosing to format only the swap and / partitions.
During the entire process, I had to go into rescue mode one more time to manually mount the unencrypted /boot partition, along with my /home partition. I copied a backup of my old /etc/crypttab from the latter, and after returning to the installer, finished the install. That finish included installing grub on my hard drive's main boot partition.
Everything seemed to finish with no problems. However, when I try to boot the debian bootloader, I get tossed to grub rescue with the message that '/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod' doesn't exist. At this point I returned to the installer, mounted the /boot partition, and saw that there grub-install didn't create that an x86_64-efi directory at all. Instead, it had created an i386 directory. The exact name escapes me at the moment.
I *think* that my install was clean other than the last bit that was related to installing the bootloader. How to reinstall the bootloader in such a way as to make all of this work.
I installed debian with minimal packages (without an any X components). Later I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel , xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd ... and other X components through apt-get. Created a Xorg.conf file.
On execution of X, I see black screen without cursor. What are the other minimal packages that I need to install in order to run any window-manager like openbox.. ?
i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
When i installed 11.4 i selected gnome as my desktop. Now i want to give KDE (suse´s default desktop) a shot. Witch packages do i have to install to have a FULL KDE enviroment as if i would have selected KDE when i installed suse? Not just the desktop, but kde apps, themes, etc. Or even better. Is there a "Meta package" that installs everything?

C: 157 GB capacity, 79% free

The installer does NOT offer the "alongside" installation option. I also tried a 10.04 live CD installer, and it also did not offer the side-by-side option. So neither installer can see Win7 on the disk. Now how do I do the installation? I'd like to dual-boot rather than devote the laptop to UBUNTU-only.
I'm running gimp2.6 on ubuntu 10.10. I need to use gimp for everyday work. 2.6 is stable, but I'm curious about the development version. A recent post on the gimp developers list referred to 2.7 as "only mildly buggy". Is there a way to install 2.7 alongside 2.6? I'd like to be able to run one or the other. I'd like to be able to install 2.7, but have the option of running 2.6 with all it's neccessary libraries unintefered with.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI burned the .iso to DVD and 11.04 seems to work fine on my Vostro 200 which is currently running 10.10. After hearing all of other peoples problems installing, I thought I might install 11.04 alongside of 10.10 which I noticed was an option. What are, if any, the hangups in doing this? Sounds great if I can play with 11.04 and its settings while keeping my 10.10 going strong.

View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.
I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)

But now with the latest version (10.10) the wubi installer isn't showing every option. How do I get the old interface where you can install it alongside Windows? The first attachment is what I get when opening wubi.exe and the second one is what I would like. That is a 10.04 version.

I open the OS through my USB, click the "Install Ubuntu" button, click forward, and then comes my problem.

I had installed Lucid on a clean install on my laptop - three partitions - ext4 home, ext4 lucid and swap.I've been using it for around a week, and find it a bit buggy in places, so I thought I would install jaunty (which proved very reliable in the past). I used the usual installer, and made my /home partition smaller, and created a new ext3 partition for jaunty, assigning the smaller partition to /home.The install proceded without any problems, but on rebooting I just get this:GRUB Loading stage1.5GRUB loading, please wait...Error 18I was hoping that Jaunty would not install grub, but I didn't see any option to prevent this during the installation. I suspect Grub 1.5 has been installed and now it's all messed up

View 14 Replies View RelatedI set up an NFS server on my home computer, all very simple add a line to /etc/exports, run exportfs -a, all worked well and as expected. Through no fault with Fedora, bugs in the client computer made me abort the entire experiment. (long story that you don't want to know) Undo all the config, reboot. However I'm now left with an issue that's not earth shattering. Every time I reboot my computer a /Public directory is created in my home directory, this is obviously a legacy from the original NFS setup. I've trawled through log files, looked at config files in /var/lib/nfs, but can find nothing that might be generating this /Public directory at boot time.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?
[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]
What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?
I am learning about linux memory and hugepages, and know that hugepages basically is just memory that manages memory. I thought I'd experiment with the subject, and wrote a very small C program [URL] that basically just eats 20 GB of memory. The idea was that I would use this small C program to see how big the page table would get when handling large areas of memory when I'm not using hugepages. After running the program on my RHEL 5 server I was expecting the PageTable to be huge, but found that it was only about 43 MB. The page size on my RHEL box i 4 kB. Why I'm not getting the major PageTable size issue I was expecting?

Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. I was using Windows 7 (I know...) and decided to Give Lucid Lynx a try. Popped in the CD, and was pleasantly surprised to find an option to "install alongside windows". So I followed the installer instructions, and the system rebooted as expected. Brilliant, or so I thought. Machine POSTed and I could feel a tinge of excitement up my spine as the thought of an open source OS was about to become a reality. Except that in reality, I got a BIOS error stating that no bootable drive had been found (I didn't even change any boot settings, but checked that they were as they should be and that the CD was removed.
I used to work as a PC technician so I knew instantly that something had gone wrong - although spent some considerable time trying to prove otherwise! OK, worst case scenario has happened, a corrupted boot sector/MBR - no worries, I thought, I've got a SATA -> USB connector, I'll use that and my laptop to recover my data (freelance work). But my HDD was not recognised (even though the same method successfully showed me data from an old drive I had around). So I open up the windows MMC and head to disk drives section and to my display I see that the drive's filesystem is "RAW".
OK, so maybe windows isn't playing fair with the linux partition? Time for a clean install of Lynx on another HDD, Boot lynx, plug in the USB > STA connector with a test drive, works perfectly, so next (praying) I plugged in the corrupted drive. Nothing. Disk utility shows my corrupted drive (partition type: HPFS/NTFS) but will not allow me to do anything other than format. Definite no-no there. I have browsed the forums extensively and could not find a useful thread, The linux dream has turned into a nightmare; I love my new desktop OS (awesome work since Hardy btw), but without my data it might as well be a netbook!
So I wanted to install ubuntu on my pc along with Windows XP (I also had vista, but it did not survive motherboard replacing I burned the LiveCD and booted from it. I chose to try ubuntu. After few minutes of playing with it I started the installer from the icon. I tried the "install alongside with other operating system" option, but I how could know what it will do? There is almost no information in that window. I have two 750GB hdds. sda with big partition over whole space and sdb with two partitions (Vista, and 40GB for Windows XP), but the installer shows only a small strip with ubuntu sign with no readable information! My sda has only 8GB of space free, so would it resize the partition to be 8GB smaller and make new partition for Linux there? On sdb it does not show my two partitions from some reason, but just one big labeled Windows 7 loader, so what would it do there? Delete the WinXP partition? Not a clue because there is no information visible in that supersmall strip with ubuntu sign on it. Just that there are some partitions hidden.
Mouseclick or mouseover do nothing. OK so I changed to the "manually specify partitions" mode to be sure what it does...And now what? I decided to shrink my WinXP partition and let the installer use the empty space, but what a surprise? It does not know what to do with! "No root file system is defined". OK so I fired up firefox and surfed a bit to know what partitions are needed. I then made ext4 partition and swap partition (not a clue how big they should be though : But there is again that message about no root filesystem! OMG so then I somehow figured out I have to assign a mount point / to it, but why there isn't any tip or info that this must be done remains a mystery for me. OK so the installation finally started and I thought that it will be OK at last. But guess what happens! No GRUB boot menu appeared but there was a blank screen for a strangely long time and then the computer rebooted again and then Windows XP started right away! WTH? I guess installer failed to change MBR or something.
OK so I booted from LiveCD again and now what... There are some guides from 2006 to be googled, but when I typed grub into a console it said it is not installed! This is great.Now I crossed a point where no BFU would ever dare to go I said to myself :- When I used the command to install grub it told me it will uninstall grub-pc package. What is grub-pc? Typing grub-pc does not do anything. Is it even possible to install something when running from a LiveCD? The crazy story does not end here. I thought that I will install it again and risk the first option "install alongside with other operating systems", if it will have any more luck with GRUB. So I did that on sdb and it took crazy long time.
I was so afraid what it was doing, but it was probably shrinking my big Vista partition.Then it was installed and what a surprise - I booted right into Windows XP again You probably think I am a masochist if I keep trying so many options desperately, but I frequently help my friends with pcs so I am glad I can test all options and be prepared for anything Now I reinstalled the system again while I was writing this and I will try to figure out how to fix that damn GRUB so I could boot into Linux
I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition alongside Windows 7. My netbook has a manufacture partitioned drive. I deleted the second partition and it is now free space. When I go to install Ubuntu, I am only given one drive: /dev/sda. What partition is this. I want to install this on the free space area that was originally the second partition. I originally tried to do this, before I deleted the partiton, however, I still had the same issue.

What I'd like to do is pop a new hard drive in one of my Ubuntu PCs and install Windows XP on the new hard drive. (Don't worry, I'm not going back to XP... I just wouldn't mind playing some old games again.) This machine originally had one hard drive with Windows 98 SE installed. When I starting using Ubuntu, I just added another hard drive and installed to that. Now I boot from the Ubuntu drive and have Windows 98 as an option in the Grub menu. If I add another hard drive and install Windows XP, how can I update the Grub menu? I realize that it's possible to manually edit the menu.lst file for Grub, but I didn't have to do that in order for Grub to recognize my Windows 98 drive. Would running update-grub as root do the trick?
