View 2 Repliesi have the OSS drivers installed for my M-audio Delta 66 card. took a lot of tweaking to get it my sound to work well. installed hydrogen and no sound. read that i need jackd. messed around with that and couldnt get it to work either. no matter what i do i cant get sound.
i am a super duper newbie at linux. usually i can find some writeup about how to make something work but not luck with this issue. thanks so much if you can help out.
a little background on myself and why i am such a newb: I use to download pirated copies of windows and pretty much any software i wanted. kinda thought it was time to stop stealing software when there was so much out there available for free. i am trying really hard to stick with linux. but i have a lot to learn. my friend who is big into linux told me "the linux community needs people like you" i am pretty much the average person, not a big computer nerd, but i am really into the unbuntu philosophy.
So there is sound but not from anything run thru jackaudio.Ardour and .9.5 hydrogen are not working i just upgraded a bunch of the programs using a ppa and now the jack ones are not working
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I try to export a song from Hydrogen to WAV or MIDI they export, but when I try to listen to the exported file it doesn't show any sound or anything. I have Ubuntu 10.10 with Realtek AC '97 embedded sound card, the sound work perfect in the machine, actually it works perfect on the program itself but in the exporting, it doesn't work, what should I do to fix this problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hear Pulse Audio is the culprit of all the sound issues. I would like to remove it, and default to straight ALSA or whatever distros like Fedora and Ubuntu use, which has never been problematic for me.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen i try to record with my dvc100 on Ubuntu the only thing that i found works is vlc but that doesn't even work properly. i found out that vlc-plugin-pulse is flickering on and off can i either replace or fix this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI run ubuntu 10.10 with an 870-g45 motherboard which contains a VIA VT1828S integrated sound chip with 8 audio channels as it states on [URL]... I am having issues with getting microphones to work properly on my computer. Sound output works great but microphones don't. I've noticed when I tested mic's on the sound configuration it would act like it gets input but it would be choppy or laggy sound. Anytime i talk to people on voice chat they say my voice sounds like it keeps clipping in and out and they can't understand a thing I say. I have tried looking on google but any fix I looked at didn't seem to work for me. I don't know if it's motherboard related
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?
[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]
What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?
I just upgraded some audio programs using a ppa and now there is no sound at all,i have been using hydrogen drum machine and ardour with jack audio and now there is no sound at all.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have three different webcams. All Logitech. Two are "cheapo" ones, and one is a more expensive, HD one. I'm running the stock Maverick desktop install, with no specifical extras for the video or the like. I plug in the webcam (doesn't matter which one I use) and it is picked up and can be used. Not a problem, but when I view the feed, the its laggy and choppy. If I plug in the cam onto my Windows XP or Window 7 installs (on the same laptop), the feed is smooth and has no issues. So I figure it has to be something to do with my settings or configurations. Problem is, I can't seem to find out what I need to tweak to smoothen or improve the feed. I've tried reducing the resolution of the feed to the minimum, but that hasn't helped.
Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. If I film myself typing at my laptop keyboard, I can see my hands move around the keyboard when I view the footage in Windows, but when I film it in Ubuntu, it's very jumpy, and my hands seem to jump about all over the keyboard -- almost as if something can't keep up.
I'm experiencing really choppy flash video playback with my newly installed ubuntu netbook remix. I tried reinstalling flash 10; no luck. Has anyone experienced this, or does anyone have any fixes?

AMD Phenom 2 955 3.2
4GB DDR3 G.Skill Gaming Ram
HIS ATi 5770 GFX
Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 tested 32 bit
Latest wine compiled with the needed patchs
All 3D Games under wine run at a very low fps even with the lowest graphics settings, this includes starcraft 2, league of legends, css, etc. using the latest ATi driver and 11.2 and the "tested" additional drivers ubuntu auto installs and yes i followed all the guides to improve performance under wine in all my games and all the custom patchs
Even native games such as Trine, cop lag spikes, and choppyness
Now this does not happen under windows, so i know my card and computer are healthy as can be, there new parts. in windows, in the same games, i get up to 200 fps +
The only conclusion i can come to is an incompatability with ubuntu and the latest ati drivers but i cant find anyone who can confirm this or that has a similiar setup and the same problems
I also see people with better or lower ati cards, some with the same, running these exact games in linux on high graphics with no lag
Now, abit of a turn around is, Trine and native games ran smooth as can be in Fedora 14, i cant remember what drivers i used, i followed there yum guide, but it ran extremely well and with no glitching in the exact same spots were i would glitch heavily in ubuntu
Tho i was unable to test wine games because i couldnt figure out how to compile wine in fedora with a patch i need to run my specific games, in ubuntu it was easy using sudo and apt-get
the only response i got from the ubuntu forums was "get an nvidia card"
I realise wine isnt perfect, but, fact is. other people have these games running fine on similiar cards and setups I dont know if there using different drivers.
I've borrowed a netbook from my girlfriend and she's let me put ubuntu on it so I can do some computing work, I installed 11.04 on it but it was a little slow so I tried 10.04. It looks great, I like it a lot, however it seems to be running a little choppy. The computer switches on and loads up in under a minute, and applications open up in a few seconds, however scrolling (particularly in browsers) is very glitchy looking, as is minimising and opening windows, nothing seems to be running smoothly.
A little info for you: using an ASUS eePC 1101HA, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Netbook Edition (However I prefer GNOME and removed the netbook launcher), I'm a Mac user but I use the Terminal a lot so I'm fairly confident with basic commands.
I have not been able to install a linux distro since 9.04. Karmic and lynx both freeze on install. (screen gets glitchy) I am a total noob when it comes to anything beyond installing.

Is my PSPgo becoming corrupt or something? That would be supremely unpleasant. I'd definitely like to avoid that, if at all possible.
Just installed 11.04 on my netbook (eee1015pem) and its laggy! Went from super fast 10.10 to slow and laggy 11.04.

So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my 800 MHz iBook G4 with a Radeon 9200. After messing around with the xorg file, I was able to get compiz working well - but now the only problem I'm having is that scrolling in any window is ridiculously choppy - comparable to scrolling a window of a computer over remote desktop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing the codecs from RPM fusion and tried to play 720p MKV files and it was extremely choppy and lots of artifacting, while my computer IS rather outdated and there was slight lag once in a while when I used Ubuntu it was never this bad and the videos were watchable, which these are not. Also, yes I am using the official Nvidia drivers and it does this regardless of what program I am using to watch them.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an old computer a friend of mine found in a dumpster, and I've decided to use it as a file server. After finally getting it to connect to my wifi network, I tried connecting to it via OpenSSH on my main desktop. After I connected, I noticed OpenSSH was being very laggy. Whenever I type anything in there's a very noticable and annoying delay from when I type it to when it appears on screen. Now, a while ago a friend of mine was helping me fix my laptop when fglrx drivers broke x, and I set up openssh on there so he could access it. According to him, there was no lag (and he's half-way across the globe, whereas my file server is in the other room). The computer is an old Pentium 4 with one and a half gigs of RAM, two hard drives (one I use for the os/swapping and the other I use for /home). It's connected to wifi via a spare USB Linksys 802.11 bg adaptor I found lying around, and it's using the default drivers that come with Debian to connect.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI ve upgraded my system from F11 to F12 recently . Everything went good till now. Yesterday i ve tried to check if there was any update via software update and a very very bad thing happened without me knowing it updated to all dev-test packages of F13.
Is there any way of uninstalling-removing everything thats connected with F13 from my system cause now all is going very slow and laggy probably bugfull. Also my software sources tab has vanished from menu...i ve tried to edit the menu to see if i can add it back but no luck its not there also....i can enter it only via terminal.
I currently have my monitors set up as an extended desktop using Nividia's Xinerama function. Everything works sweet, except it's acting slow and lags out. It all works out fine when Xinerama is disabled. At the moment, I'm using CentOS with Gnome, but I've tried other distributions with the same outcome. If I can't a fix I'm going back to windblows.

I got a TP-Link WN951N Wireless-N PCI card for my Squeeze HTPC (this is AR5008. Performance is awful. On the lucky runs I'm getting 4 MB/s from Samba, most of the times I'm seeing 1-2 MB/s, and sometimes less than 1 MB/s. Also, ssh is not smooth, e.g. when I type commands, it can take seconds before text appears on the console, or I get slo-mo. Forcing 11g gets me a consistent 2.2 MB/s but lag is still there.
The machine has also been tested under XP SP3 and pulled off a solid 11 MB/s on a large file with no lag, so the hardware would seem OK. I've tried several kernel versions (both Liquorix and Debian stock), and a couple versions of compat-wireless (2.6.38-rc4 and 2011/03/03 bleeding edge), with little variation in outcomes. The logs got no weird messages in them, although with the more recent drivers/kernels iwconfig looks like this:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktops for a couple of years now. Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.
I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound. When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using. The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound. However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound. My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device. On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices. The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.
