View 2 RepliesI need to change the default ALSA sample rate from 48000 to 44100.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI finally ditched PulseAudio and set up my system with a realtime kernel. I'm redirecting ALSA over JACK. The good: - Awesome, I can get <5ms latency without any xruns! (although 23.2 msec as described below is just fine for me) The bad: - I'm a long-time linux audio user, but have got some minor issues which spoil the fun.
1. Without pulseaudio, the indicator applet refuses to show a volume control applet. The old gnome-volume-control-applet (the one with tooltip!) loads but doesn't show in the gnome-panel. Although I can set the volume with envy24control, it's not quite as practical as using the scrollwheel! Any way to fix this?
2. When I launching any application (such as a terminal) from the gnome-panel, a new JACK connection is created, but not cleaned up after closing the application. As a result, the QJackCtl connection list is flooded with alsa-jack.jackP.8528.xx connections (where 8528 is the process ID of gnome-panel). The jack_lsp command line program shows the same (added spaces after every : to get around the smiley filter):

I have a new install of 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite with a dual boot of win7. I installed 10.10 and on the first night I swore the headphone jack sent sound to my external speakers (may of been plugged in during install). Then the next day I couldn't get any sound out of the jack. Sound kept coming out of my internal speakers. In win7 the jack worked normally. In Ubuntu I have checked sound preferences and my alsa mixer. There is no listing for a headphone jack (so it is not muted).

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a Dell Studio XPS
I am unable to get JACK to make any sound from any of the applications which plug into it.

I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.
Summary of some settings (transposed manually)
# aplay -l
*** List of PLAYBACK hardware devices ***
card 0: Headset (Logitech) device 0: usb audio
subdevice 0/1
card 1: Intel HDA device 0: ALC883 Analog
[Code].....
Whatever option i specify with ./configure, the summary says :
jack-audio-connection-kit 0.118.0 :
| Build with ALSA support............................... : false
i tried --enable-alsa without success.
I've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.
I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.
I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.
Additional info:
- Ubuntu Karmic x64 (dist-upgraded from jaunty)
- Exaile media player with Normal playback engine and Automatic audio sink
- Asus P5Q-E motherboard
- Philips DFA888 amplifier
This is Debian 8. Pulseaudio uses 44100hz by default, with 48000hz as the 'alternate sample rate'. The hda sound driver on this (and seems most) audio hardware supports 44100, 48000, 96000 and 192000 sample rates. Anything else, pulseaudio resamples it. High quality resampling settings use more cpu resources, so it's best to use one of the supported sample rates, when possible. This is done by default for 44100 and 48000, but if you want to use 96000, for example, you have to set it in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf as "alternate-sample-rate = 96000". But this causes 48000 audio to be resampled.
Pulseaudio log, 48000 stream gets resampled:
Code: Select allD: [pulseaudio] resampler.c: rate 48000 -> 96000 (method speex-float-10)
while 96000 stream is copied:
Code: Select allD: [pulseaudio] resampler.c: rate 96000 -> 96000 (method copy)
44100 and 48000 defaults make sense since this is the majority of audio content these days, but I do have some 96000hz audio. I know there were reasons why it was limited to one alternate, but I could get around the issues. So, is there a way to configure more than one alternate sample rate for pulse audio?
I tried to add my wife , and when I put in a password for her, this error comes up."Please set a valid user name consisting of a lower case letter followed by lower case letters and numbers." I did all that and I still can't set a password for her.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is my third Ubuntu installation, and even with identical hardware, sound volume is dramatically less than under Windows. I turn every slider up all the way, and it is still less than half as loud as Windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed ubuntu so I'm quite lost on some stuff. This little annoyance comes from the volume levels in Ubuntu 10.04. I have partitioned my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu, so I know the problems are not related to the hardware itself as everything works just fine in windows. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, for reference.
The multimedia keys on the computer respond correctly but on the lower three volume settings sound completely drops out as if I had muted the computer. I went into the Alsa mixer to see if I could configure these sound levels and sure enough the master volume was down to zero, PCM and LFE are also low . I changed the settings of the lower levels but when I press on the volume up or down media keys to switch level the settings get reset. I tried just changing one level, exiting and saving through alsactl but it didn't stick. Even after reboot the settings are back to the zero volume on the first levels.
I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently got a HDTV LCD display (BenQ SD3742), and a nettop (Acer revo 3610) to go with it. I connected them using an HDMI cable, and I installed the latest Ubuntu 10.04 64 bits edition.I then installed the latest nvidia drivers (nvidia-current package, which is nvidia-glx-195) to support nVidia ION platform using this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~nvidia-vdpau/+archive/ppaAccording to various websites, my LCD is FullHD, so I should be able to select 1920x1080 resolution. But the automatically selected resolution is 1280x768, and in nVidia configuration panel, this resolution is stated as being "native resolution" for my screen (its name is correctly detected by Ubuntu, by the way!).If I select 1920x1080 and "Apply", the resolution is changed but the borders of my desktop are not available... and the image looks deformed anyway. Is there any way to make Ubuntu to detect properly this LCD display in its real native resolution (FullHD, 1920x1080)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a minimal debian install, with not much more than enough to run scrotwm, I want to change the basic arrow cursor to a png I have. Is there a simpler lower level way of achieving this without having to install and modify an existing cursor theme. I installed x11-apps just to get xcursorgen... though idk if this has been an essential step or not. Anyway, I have run it on my arrow.png/arrow.cursor to create a "default" cursor file... though am lost as to where to go from there. I have no idea where the existing default cursor is located, though i suspect it's a font cursor not a icon cursor...

View 4 Replies View RelatedFor starters; although I am comfortable with Ubuntu, I don't really understand these midi and jack things,Ok,so I got a midi controller keyboard which I want to connect to my ubuntu pc to start making some music (play piano and possibly try to make some songs). I don't know if my sound card supports midi, but I got a Roland midi-to-usb converter. I connected it to my pc and downloaded Jack Control. When I fire up Jack control my normal music (using audacious) stops (don't know if this is normal). On the window that appears I hit start which results in an error, which I will paste below:

I have an ESI Gigaport HD USB external soundcard which I'd like to use via Jack with my Thinkpad T40 running Ubuntu 9.04.This is the card, it has no inputs and 8 x outputs:

The card is autodetected on plug in. I can see the 8 x outputs in the Jack connection window but I can't run any sound to it. Anything I connect to it on any of the 8 channels is silent.
I had Ubuntu 10.4 installed and JACK was working excellent. I noticed that gnome was a little more than what I needed so I installed the xubuntu-desktop package. After that install JACK no longer works... I run the command jackd -d alsa and I get a bus error. I did a new install from an xubuntu iso and same error.

Why do this? Two reasons:
1) Many of us use JACK for low-latency audio work, but it's annoying to have to turn it on or off to have to allow regular Ubuntu applications to work. It's even more annoying that both can't normally work together -- either JACK or PulseAudio must take control of the sound control. This method allow JACK to do, and PulseAudio just routes to JACK.
2) JACK is kinda super awesome. By routing PulseAudio through it, your regular Ubuntu sound application suddenly get super powers. Pretty easy to do! (Well, we count our blessings in Linux...)
1. DYNAMICALLY You need the PulseAudio utilities and JACK sink:
Code:
sudo aptitude install pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-module-jack And then run this to get PulseAudio connected to JACK: Code:pactl load-module module-jack-sink pactl load-module module-jack-source Now, go to Ubuntu's sound preferences, and you'll see "Jack sink" in the output tab. If you use JACK Control, you can create a script for the above and have it set up in "Execute script after Startup". Then, PulseAudio will automatically load the JACK sink when you start JACK.
2. BY DEFAULT Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa, and add these lines:
Code:load-module module-jack-source load-module module-jack-sink You can test it without rebooting by restarting PulseAudio. In Ubuntu, PulseAudio is started in the user session, not as a system daemon. To restart it:
Code:
pulseaudio --kill
pulseaudio --start
I can not get sound to exit from my headphone jack, whenever I plug it in, no sounds come out. Notebook model is Acer 3820TG. By the way, I've tried adding the line for HDA Intel with udo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

JACK will not run ( eg. the server just won't go! ) When running Rosegarden I can not access the Qsynth/Fluidsynth.In the Rosegarden "manage MIDI devices" menu it now shows ONLY one "General Midi Device" -thats all, and I do not know where to/how to get access to qsynth/fluidsynth to use soundfontsIn manage midi devices I ONLY get the option of "general midi"and then its only through "14:0 Midi through port 0 (duplex)" and no
other channels are available or offered! If I import one of the devices that come with rosegarden ( like Aleisis ) there is no sound.
Also if anyone knows: (& if I can fix the above) how do I set Rosegarden to use a software synth like ZynAddSubFX on the track/channel? External softsynths do not show up, so how do I assign the channel to use them>
Ps: Rosegarden did not install with the help files, even a complete removal and reinstall does not fix this- hats why I may be asking questions which could possibly be in the Rosegarden manual ( but NOT anywhere online that I've found in 3 days of searching- and I'm a research assistant for cognitive sciences- eg: good at researching! )
