I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?
View 2 RepliesI have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
I can not work with pulse. I have removed it but have failed to install ALSA in its place because the instructions I have are out of date. Could someone point me to alsa installation instructions that work with 10.10.

Just updated Meerkat - and the alsa-utils update did not go well. Aptitude reported an error trying to config. Anybody else with this problem? Workarounds or do we wait for a few days till the maintainers fix it?
View 2 Replies View Related1. I run Suse 11.2 with two sound cards , one HDA comes with motherboard and second is USB, which I use for skype and talking. In YAST everything is fine the motherboard card is marked as prime card and the usb card is marked as second. But often when I log in alsa decides that second card is main and I have to pull out the USB card, run command "rcalsasound restart" and put the USB back afterward. It is a way that to be fixed in the way that alsa remember my choices forever. 2. The other problem is that from time to time the sound suddenly dies and I have to bring it up with rcalsasound restart again.
But I have to admit that their significant improvement with managing sound with PulseAudio.
I've got sound - I hear all the system sounds, I can play sound files, CDs, etc. But I have not been able to record and play back anything with success.
Originally, when I would record (either with arecord or with audacity) I would get extremely low quality sound, with lots of noise and crackling, and my recorded voice was barely audible (even with volume turned up to max). I played with alsamixer for hours without being able to improve matters.
Things are worse now. I tried installing alsa-firmware, as indicated at SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE. I also tried updating alsa following instructions given at SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE. I'm not sure which of these changes did it, but the result is that I can no longer record ANYTHING at all. I get absolutely nothing, not even the low quality noise and crackling I was getting before. It's as if there is no audio input at all.
Uninstalling alsa-firmware and reverting back to the older alsa version (1.0.20) didn't change a thing.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop, alsa 1.0.20. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi (by the way, yast cannot detect my card, another problem I have never solved).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it. With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume. With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running pretty much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at. Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa? The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine backend.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)
I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Any ideas?
The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.
Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?

I suspect that it has to do with my system showing two sound cards (0 and 1) ; I tried different asoundrc file options from the ALSA Wiki but no luck. I am still left with Flash=No Audio.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2

One that can be used with any sound application, that works between the output of the player and the output plugs on a motherboard or sound card.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble getting ALSA working on my system. I had been using OSS for awhile but decided to move to ALSA after a kernel upgrade. ALSA worked fine except for the tedious chore of having to run alsaconf everytime I booted up. I was getting errors message for OSS during boot up telling me OSS modules weren't loading properly and linux-headers needed to be installed to get it to work properly again. I ended up installing the linux-headers later due to some nvidia driver fiddling. My system has now reverted back to OSS and I can't seem to get ALSA to work at all. I have libasound2, alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss installed and alsaconf says no ALSA modules are loaded. I've been searching around and haven't found how to get rid of OSS to install ALSA properly.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.

Having had many problems with pulseaudio on a fresh karmic install, I followed some recommended instructions for removing pulse and using alsa (URL...). unfortunately, both pulse and alsa have gone and i'm left with oss which seems to work fine. I'd like to have alsa back though.When I open amarok, it plays the frst song on the playlist then pops up a series of 'could not initialise sound engine' messages, and crashes.

and the command
cat /proc/asound/version
produces:

I no longer have a directory /proc/asound.If I open the window system>preferences>sound
there are no entries under hardware or output.I have tried to re-install alsa with this command:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss linux-sound-base alsamixergui
but still no sound.
Hardy Heron includes ALSA 1.0.15 but I need at least 1.0.16 to make VMWare player happy with it. I couldn't find the packages in backports, but maybe I missed it.

I'm having trouble after installing Lubuntu-desktop on top of a Ubuntu Server (64 bit). about the reason for this abomination of distributions is to achieve 64 bit Lubuntu. I used to run Ubuntu 64 straight, but didn't like Unity at all; Arch Linux was great up until now, but I'd like to settle down and focus more on productivity.
The situation is thus: I cannot manage to make my X-Fi USB sound card work without hacks, and at best it only works in some applications. I *think* it may be a bug in ALSA, but I had no problem in the latest versions of Ubuntu (11.04 as of this) and Xubuntu even (11.04?).
I can currently only play media in VLC media player using the following hack in my ~./asoundrc

VLC says: "main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late" when I am playing back most Bluray discs I have tried.

Possible fixes:
1. Obtain VLC 2.2.2 - see below
2. Fix by Modax here: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/10422 - not currently using dmix and not sure how this will relate to HDMI sound
3. Use Pulseaudio - this does not work for me to get HDMI sound and I do not use Pulseaudio as a rule
I have just tried to compile VLC 2.2.2 and the configure script finished properly but early in the build it fails.

I have tried installing 3 different versions of libua-dev, 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. What could be the problem?
With the bugged audio drivers I'm going to replace the computer but it would still be nice to be able to know the solution to compiling VLC 2.2.2.
I'm using Debian squeezy amd64-based with KDE4.3 from the repo. I've installed kde-minimal package with some additional packages from KDE. Also I have GNOME installed on my system.
So the problem is that when I'm in KDE alsa is not shares between applications. It means that when I'm listening Amarok, for example, I can't play any other sounds in the system, not in browser or KPlayer. And if I stop Amarok playback, I can start listening some other application or watch a movie with a sound.
It looks like I'm using good old OSS again. Back to the 90's =)
In gnome meanwhile all works fine. I suggest that I'm missing some configuration or a package, or something else. I've also tried to install kde-full package, but nothing changed.
