Mar 10, 2010This is 16 bit / 44100 Hz sample. Try to plyback this sample in your favorite music player, and after that try to use command "play SB_test.wav". You see, second part of this file sounds very differently. This is because all your 44100 Hz audio resampled 48000 Hz. It's ok if you watch DVD's (48000 Hz audio), but nasty if you listen CD-Audio (44100 Hz), DVD-Audio or Blu-ray (24 bit / 96000 Hz and 192000 Hz). My question is: how to playback audio with different characteristics without resampling?

Apr 12, 2010After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

Debian Multimedia :: Pulseaudio - Possible To Configure More Than 1 Alternate Sample Rate?
May 23, 2015This is Debian 8. Pulseaudio uses 44100hz by default, with 48000hz as the 'alternate sample rate'. The hda sound driver on this (and seems most) audio hardware supports 44100, 48000, 96000 and 192000 sample rates. Anything else, pulseaudio resamples it. High quality resampling settings use more cpu resources, so it's best to use one of the supported sample rates, when possible. This is done by default for 44100 and 48000, but if you want to use 96000, for example, you have to set it in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf as "alternate-sample-rate = 96000". But this causes 48000 audio to be resampled.
Pulseaudio log, 48000 stream gets resampled:

while 96000 stream is copied:
Code: Select allD: [pulseaudio] resampler.c: rate 96000 -> 96000 (method copy)
44100 and 48000 defaults make sense since this is the majority of audio content these days, but I do have some 96000hz audio. I know there were reasons why it was limited to one alternate, but I could get around the issues. So, is there a way to configure more than one alternate sample rate for pulse audio?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Change Default Refresh Rate
May 21, 2010After upgrading from karmic to lucid I can't change a default refresh rate for my crt monitor connected to my laptop (lcd switched off). I know radeon driver is trying to check what's the highest possible rate and sets it around 85, but the screen starts to "shiver". If I manualy change this setting in system settings for the screen to 75, it is ok. But I have to do this after every boot I generated xorg.conf and the appropriate modeline (it shows in the screen settings), and I added it to both monitor and screen section. Nevertheless the refresh rate is set to auto again in system settings and the screen wiggles a bit. How to disable automatic detection and force my own settings?

Aug 24, 2010I recently bought a logitech headset which is working very nice, the thing is that I cannot make it my default device when I plug it in. I edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to make snd-usb-audio the default card but it only works when the computer is turned on with the headset plugged in. A workaround is to plug it and then "alsa force-reload" but I find it very ugly plus it kills all apps using audio and leaves the volume indicator unstable.

I made it this way so that I wouldn't get audio lag in programs, but it also means I can't play audio in more than one application at a time, apparently (with some odd exceptions). Nov 19, 2010I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Dec 24, 2010I notice that each time I boot my computer, under the playback section of the ALSA Mixer the 'Speaker' volume control is turned all the way down. Even when I return it to the proper level, and then restart my computer later, the slider for 'Speaker' seems to default back to the previous state mentioned above. Is there a way to set the default for the ALSA mixer in a .conf file of some sort so that the default setting for 'Speaker' is always at max?

Dec 2, 20091. I run Suse 11.2 with two sound cards , one HDA comes with motherboard and second is USB, which I use for skype and talking. In YAST everything is fine the motherboard card is marked as prime card and the usb card is marked as second. But often when I log in alsa decides that second card is main and I have to pull out the USB card, run command "rcalsasound restart" and put the USB back afterward. It is a way that to be fixed in the way that alsa remember my choices forever. 2. The other problem is that from time to time the sound suddenly dies and I have to bring it up with rcalsasound restart again.
But I have to admit that their significant improvement with managing sound with PulseAudio.

Mar 17, 2011I've got sound - I hear all the system sounds, I can play sound files, CDs, etc. But I have not been able to record and play back anything with success.
Originally, when I would record (either with arecord or with audacity) I would get extremely low quality sound, with lots of noise and crackling, and my recorded voice was barely audible (even with volume turned up to max). I played with alsamixer for hours without being able to improve matters.
Things are worse now. I tried installing alsa-firmware, as indicated at SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE. I also tried updating alsa following instructions given at SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE. I'm not sure which of these changes did it, but the result is that I can no longer record ANYTHING at all. I get absolutely nothing, not even the low quality noise and crackling I was getting before. It's as if there is no audio input at all.
Uninstalling alsa-firmware and reverting back to the older alsa version (1.0.20) didn't change a thing.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop, alsa 1.0.20. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi (by the way, yast cannot detect my card, another problem I have never solved).

Sep 1, 2010I have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it. With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume. With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running pretty much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at. Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa? The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine backend.

Apr 30, 2011I can't select default refreshing rate and resolution of my screen. Believe me, 50 Hz hurts eyes and causes headache. Ubuntu doesn't recognize my screen I used to work on 1280x1024 resolution with 80 Hz refreshing rate. 1152x864 60Hz is max I can select in Nvidia X Server and Ubuntu Screen Properties. I have tried changing options in Nvidia X Server, Ubuntu Screen Properties and tried xrandr commands (these ended with xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default. or Can't open display).

Apr 10, 2010I would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)
I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Any ideas?
The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.

Apr 15, 2010Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?

Nov 25, 2009I have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. In Wheezy I used pavucontrol once for each application to change the sink from the internal to the external soundcard, and that setting would stick each time I rebooted the system (audio would go on the external soundcard). Now each time I reboot the audio gets routed to the internal soundcard and I have to use pavucontrol each time to route the audio back to the external one. URL...

and none of them has worked. I don't know if it's a related issue, but the settings I choose in the for Phonon in the KDE multimedia settings don't stick either. I select the external soundcard as default device and upon reboot the internal one is on top on the preferences list.

Is it the midi sequencer? or midi driver?Regardless, I'm unhappy with the tones ubuntu produces for its drum midis. Does any one know how to change which tones it uses? I use lilypond to write percussion music and it can be easily translated into a midi file. I like to do this so that I can hear how the music sounds in real life and many mistakes.Unfortunately the toms are painfully low and hard to distinguish.

Dec 6, 2010the dialog for "open with other application" is broken in that you cannot use 'remember this application for "AVI Video" files'. they always open with Totem. while totem is very capable, it lags at times and sometimes loses the stream if the lag is too long, while smplayer is not as finicky. besides, smplayer has more options that i require.i wish dearly to be able to double click an avi/mkv/etc video file and have it open in smplayer. are there instructions somewhere to do this? i have searched extensively, but there are too many threads that are similar that don't answer my question.

Sep 22, 2010So I just switched from KDE to Gnome and after a successful install upon logout I went to the panel that allows one to choose an application (KDE, Gnome, Windowmaker etc).
Gnome worked like a dream.
"I don't remember installing any other applications," I says to myself "Why would they be listed there? I'll try booting into one of them."
At random I chose a new xWindow and hit enter... blackness.
So like any linux user I created /etc/sysconfig/desktop with DESKTOP="GNOME" and DISPLAYMANAGER="GNOME" parameters to force my hand back into Gnome.

Will 0x80 always be the default? Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm going to be playing these discs on a DVD Player without a remote (can't help it), so I won't be able to switch the audio on the fly, and they have no menus. You put it in, and it goes straight to the movie.
